10A SUN NEWSPAPERS NOVEMBER 15, 2014 • WEEKEND EDITION SAVE LIVES. GIVE BLOOD. He wasn’t the tallest of his teammates. He didn’t garner the headlines and he didn’t make the NFL or the NBA. What Kyle Jutras did do was leave a legacy and wake in his trail that players, coaches, and even a county commissioner thought was enough to make him smile. The Venice Community lost one of their best basketball players last month, at 24 to NUT midline carcinoma, a rare and virulent cancer that mutates the body’s genes. Kyle Jutras graduated from Venice High in 2009 and led the Indians to their first district title since 1972. Along with teammates Trey Burton, who now plays for the Philadelphia Eagles, Clay Burton, who plays football for the Florida Gators, and D-1 football player Justin Grant, the hoops-playing Indians went to places that no team has ever gone before. In fact, Jutras made the game-winning jump shot that defeated the Boca Ciega Pirates from St. Pete to send the Indians to the Elite 8. “He made that big shot and that’s what a leader does,” then-Venice coach and now Sarasota coach Steve Cavallaro said. “This event is to celebrate everything he did and how he did it. Kyle just did everything right. This is why we are all here.” This week, Sarasota County’s basketball programs united for a preseason basketball tournament to raise money for the Kyle Jutras Scholarship Fund. Scholarships are awarded to students who want to become teachers like Jutras. “This means so much to us as a family,” Kyle’s father Rob, the Sarasota girls basketball coach, said. “We know the impact he had on us and other people.” Venice, Sarasota, Riverview, Booker, North Port and Sarasota Christian all participated in the preseason classic to honor Jutras. “I wasn’t a great ball player but I love to play,” event organizer and con- tractor Jeff Charlotte said. “My sister had cancer and after reading articles I had to help.” Jutras left an indel- ible mark on so many people who played with him, coached him, and coached against him. Further, his integrity as a player and student is something many want to be an example. “He had a Rudy quality to him,” Cavallaro said. Venice girls basketball coach Jim Davis, who coached Jutras before getting his new position, also had many good things to say. “His work ethic is something you wish you could emulate,” Davis said. “He did the right thing even when no one was looking.” Current Indians’ coach James Slaton remem- bered coaching against Jutras during his time as coach at North Port High School. “We led the entire game and at the last minute his team followed his leadership,” Slaton said. “He hit a buzzer beater to beat us.” Charlotte is excited about the opportunity to grow this tournament and have others get involved. “We started this a little late and were able to raise some good money just nickel and diming,” Charlotte said. “We will start earlier next year because this means so much to so many people.” Basketball community honors Jutras’ memory By NATHAN COWAN GONDOLIER SUN CORRESPONDENT JUTRAS SUN PHOTOS BY JUSTIN FENNELL Venice boys basketball coach James Slaton (left) presents the jersey worn by Kyle Jutras during his senior year to the Jutras family at a ceremony during the Jammin’ for Jutras Preseason Classic at Venice High School. He wasn’t the tallest of his teammates. He didn’t garner the headlines and he didn’t make the NFL or the NBA.
