    No. Adaptation Method Justification

    1. Adding visuals From the text, we have added some visualssuch as picture of rhinoceros, adding colours tothe text and create a border for the page.Adding visuals offers a clear view of the text. By

    adding visuals, it can attract pupils to read andhave better understanding of the text.

    2. Omitting unnecessarydetails

    When we adapt the text, we used this methodto omit unnecessary details or ideas that wehave already stated.For example:We omitted the unnecessary details from thefirst paragraph and second paragraph. Then,we combine the important details from the twoparagraphs and form a new sentence. (Refer tothe adapted text)

    1st paragraph: A critically endangered maleSumatran Rhinoceros was rescued andtransferred to a wildlife reserve in a two-weekoperation in the east coast of Sabah.

    2nd paragraph: The rhino, a specie on the brinkof extinction, was found wandering at an oilpalm plantation neighbouring a forest area inSabahs east coast on August 5 when the

    Sabah Wildlife Department launched therescue.

    Adapted sentence: A critically endangered maleSumatran Rhinoceros was found wandering atan oil palm plantation in Sabah on 5 August2008.

    Thus, the adapted sentence becomes simpleand direct.

    3. Simplifying We used this method in adapting the text to

    make the sentence to be as direct, short andspecific as possible.

    4. Including word bank The purpose of including a word bank is to helpthe pupils to understand the meaning of someof the difficult words. For this text, we haveselected four words to be put in the word bank.We feel that these words are new to pupils inYear 5.

    5. Repetition of keyvocabulary

    In this text, we used the word Rhinoceros forseveral times to show that this text is all aboutRhinoceros. Besides, we also hope that by

    repeating this word, it can help pupils tounderstand better of the key vocabulary.

    6. Activating priorknowledge

    The selected text provides an opportunity forthe pupils to activate their prior knowledge.From the text, pupils already knew thatrhinoceros is an endangered animals which isfacing a high risk of becoming extinct. By

    activating pupils prior knowledge, pupils makeconnections to the text they are reading. Thismakes their comprehension increases.

    7. Using a variety oflayout and printdesigns

    In order to make the text to be attractive, weused a variety of layout and print designs suchas creating border and colourful designs. At thesame time, it boosts the interest of the pupils toread more texts.
