Business Challenge Jurong Port has a web portal—JPOnline which houses the Container Terminal Management System (CTMS) and General Cargo and Bulk Management System (GBMS). EDI implementations with customers (eg. Edifact messages like BAPLIE, CODECO and COALAR) were done using J2EE programming solutions. There are more demands to implement new EDI solutions with existing and new customers quickly. How the EDI Translator Sys-tem (ETS) and Unattended PC EDI Gateway fits into an inte-grated solution To improve its EDI processes, Jurong Port part-nered with Ygl Convergence (Asia Pacific) and Sterling Commence Asia Pacific - a multi-enterprise collaboration company. Together, they rolled out EDI Translator System (ETS) and Unattended PC EDI Gateway to Jurong Port. The solution involved implementing the entire Gentran Integration Suite for EDI and Unat-tended PC EDI Gateway was completed within 7 weeks. The integrated solution creates a fluid messag-ing infrastructure that gives quick access to B2B EDI between Jurong Port and its customers.

“ I am satified with Ygl services. The EDI Translator System and Unattended PC EDI Gateway reduces The lead time to im-plement a new EDI message with our customer by 50 per-cent”

Improved Customer Service With the implementation of the FEDI message, Jurong Port can now provide a higher level of service to our key customers. The local ship-ping agent can now transmit the FEDI message to their overseas headquarters. New customers can now transmit Cargo EDI messages to Ju-rong Port. This saves our customers time and effort to declare their Cargo manifests and shipment booking records.

Finding the Right Solution To support this key IT improvement strategy, Jurong Port selected GIS to send and receive EDI messages with customer’s system. Mr. Ho Kong Meng, Manager Information Technology, Jurong Port Pte Ltd, explains the reason for choosing the Gentran Integration (GIS) Suite: “We based our decision on the functionality and stability of GIS, the implementation and support services available to us, and the cost effective-ness of the solution.” GIS provides Jurong Port with a truly unified, single platform to meet all EDI requirements and the Unattended PC EDI Gateway empowers the organization to collaborate with its customers.

Implementing Fast Sterling Commerce Asia Pacific and Ygl Conver-gence co-operate together to implement this system to Jurong Port where Sterling Commerce provides the GIS software and consultancy and Ygl leads the project management and the Unat-tended PC EDI Gateway. By following the tight schedule of the project management, the project was professionally planned and well executed. Sterling Commerce and Ygl Convergence com-pleted the GIS and Unattended PC EDI Gateway in 7 weeks, during which time Jurong Port ex-ecutives were trained on the software.

Moving Forward Mr. Ho Kong Meng continues: “ We now have the capability to implement EDI solu-tions quickly with our customers. As our business continues to evolve, we will con-tinue to look for more ways where GIS solutions and Unattended PC EDI Gateway can support Business-to-Business integra-tions using web services.” Concludes Mr. Ho Kong Meng.

I would add that Ygl’s Project Manager con-tributed well to this as a project manager who is responsible, meticulous and optimistic to make the two systems (GIS and Unattended EDI) work together. The regular update and feedback and following through of the project activities definitely added to the client’s satis-faction. I am particularly impressed with the project methodology that is applied so well for the short time frame of this project. I look for-ward to future partnerships with similar enthu-siasm and success.
