Swim Test Requirements for Sailing CampOn the first day, all youth classes require sailors to participate in a swim check and a capsize drill. Instructors oversee and explain both of these drills beforehand to the students. The swim check consists of participants swimming a minimum of 20 feet without a life-jacket, briefly treading water, and then putting on their life-jacket in the water. Students who are unable or unwilling to participate in either of these drills cannot join their class on the water until they complete the requirements. Please ensure that your child is comfortable completing a swim check before registering for a course since SSP cannot refund the tuition once a course begins. *goggles may be worn*

Junior Opti CampAge 6-8 Through lake exploration and games, our Jr. Opti camp makes learning to sail safe and fun. The goal of this camp is to give kids a sense of confidence on the boat and a love for sailing and the water. There are two sailors in each Opti, giving them a chance to meet new friends and share the fun. 7927 M-F July 15-July 19 9am-12pm7928 M-F July 15-July 19 1pm-4pm$275 R / $330 NR Location: Waverly Beach Park Instr: Sail Sand Point

Intermediate— Picking Up SpeedAge 8-13 A good fit for sailors who are exceedingly familiar with all topics introduced in Youth Beginner, this camp draws on what beginning sailors already know and introduces increasingly advanced concepts. The goal by the end of camp is to have all sailors comfortable sailing upwind and downwind in medium breeze, and ready to check-out an Opti in Open Boating. Prerequisite: Youth Beginner (or equivalent). 7929 M-F July 8-July 12 9am-4pm7930 M-F July 29-Aug 2 9am-4pm7931 M-F Aug 12-Aug 16 9am-4pm$450 R / $505 NR Location: Waverly Beach Park Instr: Sail Sand Point

Cruising CampAge 12-15 This exciting camp utilizes SSPs new J-24 keelboat, Silver Lining, as a vehicle for cruising and exploring around Lake Washington. Participants will learn the basics of sailing as a team on a keelboat, and then set off on a new adventure each day. No prior sailing experience is necessary for Cruising Camp7932 M-F July 1-July 5 9am-4pm7933 M-F July 15-July 19 9am-4pm$450 R / $505 NR Location: Waverly Beach Park Instr: Sail Sand Point

Youth Beginner— Starting to Sail SoloAge 8-13 This camp introduces and reaffirms the basics of sailing a small boat to kids by putting them in the driver’s seat of their own Opti sailboat. The main focus of this repeatable camp is the development of basic skills for a strong sailing foundation. By the end of camp most sailors will be able to put together an Opti and have some control of the boat in light breeze. This camp is a good fit for brand new sailors and returning beginning sailors alike.7922 M-F June 24-June 29 9am-4pm7923 M-F July 1-July 5 9am-4pm7924 M-F July 22-July 26 9am-4pm7925 M-F Aug 19-Aug 23 9am-4pm7926 M-F Aug 5-Aug 9 9am-4pm$450 R / $505 NR Location: Waverly Beach Park Instr: Sail Sand Point

Youth sailing camps at Kirkland’s Waverly Beach Park are taught by Sail Sand Point, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization located at the north end Magnuson Park on the shores of Lake Washington in Seattle. As a community boating center SSP offers classes, rentals, and other sailing and paddling opportunities to the public. Camps are taught by certified instructors using US Sailing curriculum and adhere to their model of providing sailing instruction through safety, fun and learning.
