Parts of the Resume ( Followed by Tips from Naviance )

Objective = Your resume objective should provide a short, simple and clear statement about the kind of position you wish to obtain.

Summary = A summary statement is a quick way to highlight the most significant accomplishments and skills on your resume.

Work Experience = One of the keys to writing a good resume is to learn how to write short "snippets" that demonstrate what you did (action) and what you accomplished (result).

Education = Include coursework related to your job objective, apprenticeships, workshops or seminars.

Volunteer Services = Note any special accomplishments or leadership positions with your volunteer service.

Extracurricular Activities = Don't worry about listing only the "right" activities. Try to note everything you've done and you can always select just a few items for a printed resume.

Awards / Certificates = Think of anything you've earned, even if it seems small.

Skills / Academic Achievement = Do you have technical skills such as computer programming or proficiency with processors and spreadsheets? Make sure you list specific languages or programs.

Music / Artistic Achievement = Musical and artistic achievement requires a lot of hard work.

Athletic Achievement = Make sure you note any leadership positions or awards.

References = Make sure you have permission from each person listed to use them as a reference.

Additional Information = Use this section to make a note of anything that does not quite fit into the other sections.

Leadership = List any leadership experience you may have. Examples may be positions, offices, or experiences you can point to.

For additional tips and suggestions related to each part of the resume, click “More Tips” in Naviance as you complete each part of the resume.

14. The below screen will appear. Complete your Objective and click “Add.” You only need one Objective.

If you need to make changes to the section content, save your resume first and return to Add/Update Sections. You can come back here and check more boxes at any time. Click “Save Resume” at the bottom of the screen once you make all your selections.

20. The below screen will appear. Your resume has now been saved. You can Edit, download a PDF version, download a Microsoft Word version, or delete the resume by clicking any one of the four options on this screen.

Ideally, your resume will be one page and no more than two pages. If your resume is two pages, you should print page one on the front side of a paper and page two on the back side of that same paper.

As with all work that you complete, once you print the resume, proofread it for any mistakes.

Depending on the type of job for which you are applying, you may want to consider printing your resume on resume paper. This type of paper will be more expensive and can be found at stores like Staples. When you buy resume paper, resume envelopes are sometimes included should you have to mail your resume.

A sample resume is on the following page, followed by a sample job application.

You have now finished. To check if you completed a Resume, click the tab “My

Planner,” then click “Tasks,” and make sure the activity is under “Completed Tasks.”
