Moving away from home and beingsurrounded by new people is exciting, butliving in the same room is not always easy.Having roommates can be one of the mostrewarding – and challenging – experiencesof your college life.

The housing survey you’ll receive if youchoose to live on campus lets you noteyour preferences in a variety of areas andwill help to match you with the mostsuitable roommate.

Your campus home may be one of our six full furnished, main-campus residencehalls, or a garden-style apartment at VulcanVillage on the upper campus.

And remember, you can always go to yourcommunity assistant (CA), a speciallytrained undergraduate or graduate studentwho lives on your floor and who cananswer a variety of questions on just about any topic related to the university.

Sharing a living space with someone else canbe difficult, but there are things that you andyour roommate or suitemates can do to be surethat you see eye-to-eye.

You are encouraged to sit down and discussexactly what you expect from each other fromthe very beginning.

For example:

• How will you leave messages for each other?

• Can you use each other’s computer?

• How will you keep the suite clean?

• How often can friends come over?

Together you’ll sign a Roommate Agreementthat will help youidentify your values, communicate clearlyand solve problems ina respectful, maturemanner.

You’ll find that if youset up expectationsearly in yourrelationship, there’sless chance ofmisunderstandingsdown the road.

If you choose to live at Vulcan Village, you’ll have aclubhouse, fitness center and outdoor pool rightnearby.

On-campus safety

For your safety, fire suppression and smokedetection systems ensure prompt response to fireemergencies. Digital video cameras are positionedthroughout the property, and Cal U’s police officersare always available if an emergency arises.

Saving the planet

Cal U has won awards for its commitment tosustainability and energy efficiency.

Geothermal heat pumps keep the residence hallscomfortable, greatly reducing the need for fossilfuels and shrinking the university's overall energy footprint.
