Newsletter 13 June 2017 Junior School From the Head Habit of Mind: Persisting Value of the Week: Sportmanship Dear Parents and Girls, Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been affected by the brutal Western Cape storms and the wild fires which raged along the Southern and Eastern Cape coastline. We extend our heartfelt condolences and support, es- pecially to Woodridge College, Oakhill School and Knysna High School which were all affected by the fires. While we cannot begin to comprehend what the Woodridge community as well as those in Knysna who lost their homes and loved ones must be going through, we have watched with deep gratitude and thankfulness the large-scale donation and support operation in place – distributing much needed items and offering accommodation to the displaced victims of both events. Such an out- pouring of compassion being manifested in extraordinary generosity is inspiring to witness and renews our belief in people’s goodness and kindness. Woodridge College in particular has lost 60% of their campus and thankfully their pupils and staff were sheltered from harm. We are in communication with the headmaster and will support them wherever needed. Woodridge has closed until 4 July, giving management time to implement contingency plans to ensure that teaching and a full extra mural programme will resume when everybody returns. A Woodridge Disaster Fund has been established for those wishing to contribute: Account Name : Woodridge Disaster Fund | Bank: Standard Bank Account Number : 043654428 | Branch Code: 051001 | Account Type: Savings K-Day 2017 is already upon us with a music concert kicking off the festivities this evening at 19:00 in the Centenary Hall at St Andrew’s College. Thereafter, our girls eagerly await their netball fixtures on Friday and hockey on Saturday. I would like to thank the staff, coaches and parents in advance for their support and efforts to prepare the girls for this much-anticipated derby. Our focus as school this week is on sportsmanship. As educators, parents and coaches it is important for us to play an effective role in being good role models to our young sports women, especially in the hype of K-Day which can become overwhelming. Let us encourage and emphasise fair play, respect for match officials and opponents as well as create a positive sporting experience for our girls. This is best achieved through endorsing healthy competition and not making winning the only positive outcome. We wish all our girls a very happy weekend. We know that they will be fantastic hosts and make the school and their parents very proud. “What you are as a person is far more important than what you are as a player.” John Wooden Grade 6 and 7 exams commence on Tuesday next week. Exam schedules along with tips for healthy study habits were sent out a few weeks ago. HUDSON PARK DERBY DAYOur trip to East London on Saturday went smoothly and we were met by a warm, friendly team of teachers and sport officials. Despite playing on a very small grass field, our hockey teams did exceptionally well, winning four, drawing two and only losing one game. Hudson’s netball teams proved to be exceptionally strong, but we still managed to win two of the eight games. Once again our girls played with pride and great sportsmanship.
