Tested player must: Begin at Start with a ball and work for a total of one minute around the 10x10m square. He/she will be required to rotate the ball around his/her waist, clockwise at pace and on the move for 20 seconds, anti-clockwise for a further 20 seconds, completing the minute by doing Figure 8 exercises through their legs. The coaches/helpers are to be used as feeders to quickly give the tested player another ball if they lose control. Every knock-on in each section is then added up as a total. Player must complete this skill once in total.

Speed & Skill (X2) Time Based

Equipment: Awarded for: 3 cones Player timed from Start until reaching B 1 Ball Each mistake (ie knock-on/bad pass etc) incurs a 0.2 second time penalty 2 coaches/helpers

Tested player must: The player has 2 runs. On the first run the tested player sprints out to Cone A and takes a pass from a coach/helper on the right. He/she then immediately passes to another coach/helper on the left and sprints to the end at Cone B. On the second run the pass is taken from the left and passed to the right. The player is timed from the moment he/she leaves Start until they reach Cone B. Each mistake (ie knock on/bad pass) incurs a 0.2 second time penalty. An average time is taken from the 2 runs

Tested player must: High Ball Begins at Start, 5m out from the tryline. He/she has to run and catch 3 high balls inside the in-goal area thrown by the coach/helper over the players head as they are running and then score a try. Stationary Ball 1st run - Begin at Start, sprint to Cone A. At Cone A, pick up a ball 0.5m before the line and in the same movement touch down just over the line. 2nd run – Same as 1st except the tested player must kick the stationary ball forward from the 0.5m mark (Cone A) into the in-goal and touchdown. Player must complete 5 tries (3 high balls, 2 stationary balls) in total.

Tested player must: Stand in the middle of the back line as if a defender. The 4 attackers will then execute 5 attacking movements from a play the ball situation. The tested player has to stop the ball carrier reaching the line by a 2 handed touch. The attacking players may utilise any attacking options they wish including running from Acting Half, dummy runs etc but no kicking. If the ball carrier is tackled via a 2 handed touch then the play ends. If the ball is knocked on/passed forward etc then the play ends. Player must complete this skill once in total.

Warm up The player must create a 10 minute warm up designed for any age between 5 years old and 13 years old. It should incorporate aspects of light running and stretches for arms, legs and ankles. The player will then take their warm up at the next available date.

Stage 1 The player will be given 3 sections of the Laws of the Game to study The following week the player will be shown several situations at training relating to those sections. For instance if the player were given a section on play-the-ball to study then the following week he/she would be shown several instances of the play-the-ball to show them which is right and which should be penalised and in what way.

Stage 2

Following the completion of Stage 1 to the satisfaction of the coach, the player will be given 3 more

sections of the Laws of the Game to study. Then the following week will be shown in training

examples of all 6 areas he/she has studied.

He/she will then referee a small 5 minute game

Stage 3 Following the completion of Stage 2 to the satisfaction of the coach, the player will be asked to study the entire Laws of the Game. The following week (if appropriate) he/she will be asked 10 multiple choice questions on the Laws of the Game. If the coach is satisfied, the player will then referee the end-of-training-session game.

Remember to setup your session well in advance so that you are completely in control when you are put in charge and don’t have to make players wait while you setup the drill. On 1 kick, an additional coach/helper may act as a defender and put pressure upon the kicker. Player must complete this skill 5 times in total.
