The last few months have given me a great opportunity to see Kiwanis in action. Going to spring divisionals and seeing the great work and service to mankind is just thrilling. The dis-tinguished clubs and outstand-ing performances just show me that Kiwanis is the right vehicle to get things accomplished. The hours of service to children and the community are truly amaz-ing. Congratulations to the Ki-wanis clubs and their members.

I also had the opportunity to go to Key Leader. This pro-gram enforces the true qualities of leadership. The five Key Leader Principles are Personal Integrity, Personal Growth, Respect, Building Community and the Pursuit of Excel-lence. The mission of Key Leader is to inspire young people to achieve their personal best through service leadership. Thanks to Greg Brown, Tom Wilson and their volunteers for a great key leader event. Hopefully next year we can have every Kiwanis Club of Michigan send one person to this fine event. The SLP (Serves Leadership Programs) are the key foundation for growth in Kiwanis. We should do everything in our power to include the SLP in our family and continue to develop and support these fine programs

Also, I had the opportunity go to a prayer breakfast; this event gave tribute to the members of the division that passed away this past year. What a great event to reflect on the fine accomplishment of those mem-bers and what they did for children through their years of service. Hopefully we can follow in their footsteps.

The U.S. – Canada Kiwanis International Goodwill Banquet held in April was outstanding. There were over 170 Kiwanis members in attendance. What a joyfully and friendly activity this was. The Kiwanis Spirit (which Past Gov. William Gohier always emphasized) was shining high in the sky that night. Kevin Johnson –U.S. Consul General to Canada delivered an exceptional speech stressing the long standing friendship between the U.S. and Canada.

Coming up in the next few months are the Interna-tional convention in June and the Michigan convention in August. The International convention in New Orleans is an important event to attend to learn what interna-tional is doing and how international supports our clubs. We will also have the opportunity to help Sue Petri-sin get her campaign going for international president.

The Michigan District convention in Boyne Highlands will give you the opportunity to build skills as a Kiwanis member. There are also two great candidates running for Governor elect. Be sure to become a delegate for your club and attend the convention - so you can vote for one of the candidates.

District officeFrom the Governor-Elect

David BabbageGovernor-Elect

From the Executive DirectorMy journey’s last weekend took

me far and wide in south central Michigan and two items helped crystallize the impact of Kiwanis in our District. Sometimes it’s difficult to have perspective when Kiwanis is both a job and avocation, but the simple things often bring focus.

First, I was reminded of the far reach of our organization as I made the effort to count the “Kiwanis Meets Here” signs posted in four of the communities I passed through. Often overlooked, they represent

the welcoming nature of our organization and the first invita-tion to come see what service is about in “our” community.

Secondly, and not nearly as subtle, was my experience at Key Leader weekend in Howell early in May. I was not there to represent Michigan Kiwanis, our Governor Liz and Governor-elect Dave accomplished that. I actually delivered an eighth grade student sponsored by my Club. We had dis-cussed “leadership” previously and he was candid enough to admit that there are leaders and there are followers and that he definitely fit the latter category. That was Friday afternoon.

When I arrived on Sunday to witness some of the final activities and the graduation, I had the pleasure of retriev-ing a changed teenager. Will he become a leader? That is yet to be known. Did he have the confidence to share the experience, make some new friends in the Kiwanis world, and set some goals? Yes, the transformation has begun.

I now know that one of our High Schools in Ann Arbor will have a Key Club member next year that they would not have ever encountered. Just as you and I will never likely know the impact of all the Kiwanis projects we have joined in, we will have one more Kiwanian that has several decades of potential. Our job is to help maintain that energy level and promote ac-tivities that will appeal to a new generation of servant leaders.

Since 2005, Key Leader has inspired over 17,000 stu-dents. The five Key Leader Principles include Personal Integrity (doing the right thing); Personal Growth (develop-ing in mind, body, and spirit); Respect (showing consider-ation for self, others, and property); Building Community (developing relationships to achieve positive goals); and Pursuit of Excellence (expecting and achieving the best).

I am appealing to you now, well in advance of next May. Encourage your club to sponsor a student to this 36-hour life changing event. Your candidate does not need to already be involved in Kiwanis. In fact, the pro-gram is designed for students that have not yet demon-strated their potential. The Builders Club members and Key Club members that we sponsor get the added benefit of expanding their vision of opportunity. Put $200 in your budget now. The return on investment will amaze you.

The campaign is continuing to save the world from maternal/neonatal teta-nus (MNT) and has already eliminated it in four of the originally 38 countries. These countries are Burkina Faso, Ghana, Liberia and Senegal with the help of International donations over $10 million since the kick off last July. What an achievement it would be for Kiwanis International to reach its goal of $110 million by 2015. The Michigan District has played a role in reaching its goal and has donations over $300,000 from the last report.

With our Global Campaign for Children, you and your fellow club members can save or protect thousands of lives. The Eliminate Project offers a specific opportunity: become a Model Club. A Model Club pledges to give at least $750 per club member over the next five years or $12.50 per month. This is five years from the date a club commits to become a Model Club. Rescue and many volunteers worked together to offer replacement trees for some of those lost in the March 15th tornado.

We professionally dug up, wrapped and transported many 2-3” caliber young trees, including Lilacs, Elms, Crabapples, Birches, Oaks and Maples. We delivered the trees to residents’ yards, but they were responsible for digging the appropriate holes. We only asked for a small donation to help to recover costs incurred for get-ting the trees out of the ground and delivered to the ho-meowners.

The trees had to be dug up & processed before they budded out and started to root so the “The Dexter Tree Project” developed and culminated quickly.

Dave turned 84 years old this year, and he can no longer drive to the weekly Kiwanis meetings. Therefore, our member Sharon Gordon organized “Dave’s Taxi Service” to make sure Dave gets to

each meeting. Sharon created a calendar so that members can sign-up to both pick up and drop off Dave every Thursday. Since the beginning of the year; there has been a two-month calendar filled with volunteers! Each volunteer driver calls Dave at his home beforehand, to make sure Dave is ready to go.

Do you know a member of your club that you haven’t seen in a while? Are they not at-tending the meeting because they cannot get there? Go ahead and organize a taxi service - you’d be surprised with the volunteers who want to help out!

Key Club

Michigan District of

Connecting the K’s with Kiwanis One Day By: Key Club Lieutenant Governor, Michelle Petersen

Kiwanis One Day is an annual event that pro-motes having interclubs and friendly communica-tion with all branches of the Kiwanis family. It’s a big deal for many Kiwanis clubs, especially those in Michigan, because it’s fun, eye opening, and of course beneficial for all involved.

This year, Kiwanis-affiliates in the Shelby Township area celebrated Kiwanis One Day by host-ing a Kids Against Hunger packaging. Kids Against Hunger is an organization that helps volunteers pack-age balanced meals for people in countries around the world that have been struck by natural disasters or war. It’s a huge project though, and the host club, Utica/Shelby Twp. Kiwanis Club, couldn’t put the event on by itself. Ford Key Club, UAIS Key Club, Shelby Ak-tion Club, Oakland Circle K, and Daybreakers Kiwanis Club all came down to lend a hand with the packaging.

This event truly was Kiwanis One Day at its best in that not only did servant leaders of all ages come to-gether to feed the hungry of the world, but some unfor-

gettable memories were made. The volunteers laughed and chatted while putting together nearly 40,000 meals in 7 hours. UAIS Key Club member, Katy Surhigh, says, “I loved the feeling that I was making such a huge impact on hunger worldwide and that other Kiwanis Clubs everywhere were serving as well on the same day.”

If you want to promote healthy relationships with your fellow Kiwanis family members, complete a big service project, or just have a great time, you can participate in next year’s Kiwanis One Day, which is always held in mid-April. You don’t have to wait until then though! Kiwanis One Day is the beginning, not the end, of what you can do with the clubs in your area. Hold a dinner fundraiser, park clean up, talent show, anything to promote service for all ages within your local community. Whatever event it is, inviting Kiwanis family makes it so much more than a service project. It makes it a life changing experience.

Northwood University’s Chapter of Circle K participated in the Circle K Michigan District Convention hosted by the Circle K club at Central Michigan University Feb. 17-19. While there are many activities that take place over the course of the weekend, one important event is the presentation of dis-trict awards that recognize clubs for all they have accomplished throughout the year. For certain club awards there are divisions — clubs with 40-plus members and clubs with 39 or less members. This year Circle K of North-

wood inducted 35 new members, which brought its total membership to 57 members. The increase meant North-wood would compete against clubs including the University of Michigan and Wayne State University in the 40-plus members division. It is the first time Northwood qualified for this division.

Despite this challenge, NU’s Circle K had its most successful year taking home eight district awards. Northwood’s Kiwanis adviser Cathy Devendorf was awarded the Michigan District Dennis Dimoff Outstanding Advisor Award; the sponsoring Midland Kiwanis Club was awarded the Michigan District Clay Nichols Outstanding Sponsoring Kiwanis Award. Northwood’s Circle K was awarded the Club Growth Award for its increase in membership. Northwood also earned the Outstanding Club Achievement Award, which is the top award and takes into account all functions of a Circle K club — the number of service, leadership and fellowship activities hosted; the level of interaction with other Circle K clubs; the level of interaction with other levels of Kiwanis; involvement at district events; the amount of publicity in local papers, news stations and radio stations, and total service hours logged.

In addition to these club awards, four individual members were recognized for going above and beyond in their respective positions. Students recognized were Tiffany Biro, a junior from Allen Park, Outstanding Bulletin Edi-tor; Cody Colella, a sophomore from Butler, Pa., Outstanding Secretary; Eric Bischer, a senior from Harbor Beach, Outstanding Treasurer, and Adam Matzke, a senior from Midland, Outstanding President. There are 13 schools in the Michigan district. Because of the emergence of the club as one of the strongest and most active clubs in the Michigan district, Northwood was selected to host the district convention next year.

The Opening Business Session follows at 2:00, and the fun night begins at 6:00 on the grounds of the resort with a cookout and the availability of lawn games, chair lift rides, Zip-line adventures, par 3 golf, and much more.

Saturday opens with a breakfast hosted by the Past Lt. Governors, followed by two sessions of workshops. Bring your club scrapbook for judging and visit the many Kiwanis and commercial vendors in the Exhibit Hall, all with ideas to help your club with projects and fundraising. The Honors and Awards Luncheon at Noon is always a sellout. Join fellow Kiwanians as we recognize many of the successes and also celebrate our 25th year of participation by women in Kiwanis. The Second Delegate session will provide an opportunity to elect new leadership for 2012-13 and we will have two candidates for Governor-elect. Harold Oswald from Division 12 and Stan Nelson from Division 20 are seeking to become the 96th Governor of the Michigan District.

Saturday evening is always a celebration at the Governors Banquet, and will be followed by a so-cial event including music and refreshments, and more to yet be determined.

Sunday wraps up our annual gathering and we take time to remember those Kiwanians who have died during the past year at the Memorial Breakfast with a speaker provided by our long time supporter Rock Campbell from the Fellow-ship of Christian Athletes. The Closing session will end our morning with the installation of our new Leadership for the coming year.

We are adding workshops each week and you will find opportunities to hear about fundraising, foundations, service leadership, media assets, awards and recognition, and if we can pull it off a summit for Club Officers to participate in a strate-gic planning and feedback session.

DISTRICT CONVENTION Continued from 1James Dye MemorialThe District mourns the loss of Past Governor James Dye on Monday, March 12, 2012 at Heather Hills Care Center in Grand Rapids MI. Jim taught for several years before he and his wife Patricia became owners of Saginaw Travel Service and operated it for more than 30 years. Jim served as our Governor in 1984-85. Jim’s career in Kiwanis in-cluded Kiwanian of the Year three times in the Kiwanis Club of Saginaw Riverside. He was a distinguished President and Lt. Governor and served us in many capacities in his 46 years in Kiwanis.

projects continue and we invite non-Kiwanians to attend. We celebrate our Club Anniversaries with BBQs and we in-vite non-Kiwanians to attend. (I think you see the pattern here. . .invite. . . ask. . .invite, keep talking about Kiwanis.) We meet with school administrators to offer our assistance to the schools with our BUG, Terrific Kid, Key Leader and Law Enforcement Academy Programs, during a time when they are planning the next school year and don’t have the pressures of classes in session and may be more attentive to outside sources of help.

We hold our car shows and golf outings and events to develop community awareness of Kiwanis. We assist our Key Clubbers with fundraisers, like car washes, volunterring with Senior citizens to provide yard work and helping our cities and towns with park maintenance.

Summer is the time when we enjoy the fellowship of Ki-wanians from around the world at our International Con-vention and Statewide at our convention at Boyne High-lands. We make important decisions at these events to elect our new leadership and decide on proposals and amendments that shape the future of our organization.

We hold membership drives; attend other functions in our communities like parades and parties on the town square – wearing our Ks and representing our proud Kiwanis family.

Lazy Days of Summer – not for a Kiwanian!! Summer is another Season to promote and grow our Kiwanis Roots. This is the time we are Growing Michigan through Kiwanis!

Yours in Continued Growth and Service in Kiwanis

Gov. Liz
