Arras scored in the 1st minute. Bastia Borgo equalised in the 3rd minute. No more goals until the second half when Arras scored the winner. Decent ground with admission at 8 euros for the stand and 6 euros for standing. A 4-page programme was free with admission. Clubhouse selling drinks as well as a couple of refreshment huts. Train tickets already purchased to the Midlands were not going to waste even though my daughter's assistant duties at Smithswood Firs in the MFL went with the weather. yet finally won 3-2 with a goal 30 seconds before the end of extra time. Having hit the woodwork 6 times. A bit cruel on the officials that the spectacular view is of Queen Elizabeth Hospital…their combined age of the 3 nearer 200 than 150!’

‘The photo shows the Metchley 3G Pitch in Birmingham (B15 2QU). You might be interested to know that the old Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) was built, along with the adjoining Medical School, next to the University of Birmingham in the 1930s. It was designed to be at the leading edge of healthcare in Birmingham and across the country, consolidating the services of the city's 18th century teaching hospitals. QEH was opened in Edgbaston in the late 1930s. When construction began at the site in 1933, it marked a new departure for medicine in Birmingham, linking hospital and academic medicine on a single site’.

WebEd adds: ‘I would like to thank Steve for his terrific photo and details of the game. As we don’t have a link to the Birmingham & District Football League at present in our comprehensive FGIF Pyramid Links Directory (listed at the top of the Links menu) you can get more details about these sides (both in Division Five) and others from the superb competition site by clicking the following link at: http://birminghamafa.co.uk/index.htm

Well we got the Kent part right! Friday saw game after game being called off including Plan A and Plan B and so it was we ended up at Plan C - Maidstone United. Decent ground, decent crowd, decent game - ATROCIOUS weather! The 205 travelling Hartlepool fans went home happy after a 2-1 victory. There was also a coachload of Tranmere fans at this one after their game at Dover was called off’. ‘Following on from Friday with late postponements and half-time abandonments Saturday saw us play safe and head straight for the plastic at Sevenoaks. My original choice of game was actually played but I wasn't taking any chances and made sure of 90 minutes of football. Greatness Park is an apt name for Sevenoaks at the moment as they are romping away with the title. Town turned on the style and blew AFC Croydon away winning 7-0. The score-line did not flatter Sevenoaks - they could have scored many more. Not the weekend we had planned but at least I saw two games. Monday already looking difficult as well. Happy Easter!!!!!’. Several others also took the opportunity and groundhoppers were the majority of the 31 in attendance. At the start of play it was 1st v 3rd though the gap between the two sides was 20 points and this was evident in the final score. However, the first half was competitive and Boldmere had a header hit the inside of the post and bounce out early in the second half which would have made the score 1-1. GNP conceding is a rare thing though as this game was their 7th consecutive league clean sheet. As the game wore on Boldmere tired and GNP showed why they are runaway leaders of this division. There could easily have been more than 5 goals. No admission charge, no programme and refreshments only available via a machine made for a very cheap day out!’. Despite the freezing conditions the two teams provided an extremely entertaining game with Desborough winning by the odd goal in five. WebEd - In addition Steve brings us another terrific selection of programme cover scans from some of the recent additions to last season’s data base. These include ... Fife Amateur club, Inverkeithing Hillfield Swifts AFC, from season 2001-2002. Programmes from Scottish Amateur clubs are very unusual. New boys Brynmawr AFC, from the Gwent County league this season. All clubs in this league must issue for every game but getting hold of new issues can be very tricky. A very rare Sunday club issue from Aldridge Town FC of the Sutton Sunday league from 1990-91. A very faint issue from the Schools cup in 1984-85. Westlands School from Torquay entertain St Joseph’s School from Swindon in a second-round tie. An unusual single sheet war time issue from London Fire Services as they play Tooting & Mitcham in the South Eastern Combination in 1944. Playing in the now defunct Burton & District league were Uttoxeter FC, who had this tremendous programme on offer in 1991-92. Scottish Junior cup action from 2014 as Spey Valley FC play Aberdeen East End in 2014-15. Spey Valley subsequently merged with Grantown and are now known as Spey Valley United. Sporting Khalsa Women did not issue for every game in 2016-17, but when they did it was this super full colour effort which was given out for free. A programme from the original Tufnell Park FC team from 1948, as they play, and beat, Corinthian Casuals. Rovers) in the East Riding County League Division One fixture played on 03/03/18…now added to the FGIF album gallery… WebEd writes: ‘After enduring several days of heavy sleet and snow, freezing cold temperatures and a bitter wind-chill, the football traveller would be forgiven for feeling pessimistic about the prospect of watching any live football at the end of the week. By the time the Beast of the East had done its best to wreak havoc and cause widespread disruption throughout the country the chances of finding a game that had survived the effects of this Siberian phenomenon were virtually nil. But as any collector of footy grounds will tell you we all live in hope of finding something (no matter how small) to satiate our fix even when the odds are stacked so highly against us. By Friday morning the number of expected call-offs had increased to an unprecedented level. It was not so much a case of what had already been called off now but what would be left by the time kick-off approached. You certainly know it’s bad when Football League matches are getting postponed as well. Given the worsening situation, it’s going to be a hard call for clubs and referees to allow their games to go ahead. They have to make bold decisions taking into account not only the effects of the dreadful weather on the pitches which were obviously unplayable but also the hidden dangers to all travelling fans who have to make long and difficult journeys on hazardous untreated routes. My short list of just four possible remaining matches (all 3/4G ‘hoppertunites) was soon decimated, with three rapidly falling victim to the Beast. Checking the current information posted on the excellent FA Full-Time websites and my own twitter feed spelled out the state of play with those dreaded letters: P-P. It appeared that despite the valiant efforts made by countless club officials and volunteers to clear pitches, stands and walkways, the games I had chosen at Scarborough Athletic FC (NPL1N); Basford United FC (NPL1S) and Ruston Sports FC (Lincolnshire County) were all postponed (and quite rightly so). This left just one local game standing and that was at Harchester United (v Middleton Rovers) in the East Riding County League Division One. I also noticed that Scunthorpe United (v Oldham) in the Football League was still on and could serve as a back-up (back-up) if you get my drift (snow pun intended). So, it was with a mixture of hope and trepidation that I checked my trusted digital footy sources once again on Saturday morning. To my utter amazement and with some dis-belief my one and only remaining game was still listed as being ON! Surely there must be some mistake?! Had someone forgotten to update their site? A quick phone check call to helpful club secretary Dan Chadwick indeed confirmed some very welcome news. In fact, he almost seemed puzzled as to why there was any doubt in the first place. Game on! The club is based at the large well-respected Malet Lambert School located in the Sutton Ings area of East Hull and found off James Reckitt Avenue. Teaching pupils of secondary school age it has a long and proud history, dating back to 1932. Once a grammar school, it became a community comprehensive school in 1968 and continues to adopt the same principles almost 50 years later working now as a formal Multi-Academy Trust with other partner institutions in the East Riding. A beautiful brick-built façade to the building bedecked in ivy greets the visitor as

you turn into school grounds – it looks quite impressive here. The driveway leads past the main school buildings and sports department before reaching the adjacent 3G multi-use games area at the far side of the campus. Bordered on three sides by residential housing the site has a more-homely feel (another pun) about it. With plenty of adjacent parking spaces the floodlit facility is easy to access and hoppers will be pleased to know that you can watch the action from inside the cage. This was refreshing to learn as I had some difficulty getting pitch-side a few weeks earlier on recent visits to watch matches at South Cave United FC and Hedon Rangers FC (both Humber Premier League sides) who are based at local schools and use 3G pitches – if you go here please be warned. Harchester United Football Club is a relatively new side formed as recently as 2013 (starting I think as a pub team from East Hull). The club, members of the East Riding County League, enjoyed much success last season winning both the Division 2 title and the ER Junior Cup. They have stepped up to the plate once again this campaign and before the game today currently occupy second spot in the ten-team Division One table having lost only two matches to date. Their visitors Middleton Rovers (who lie in eighth) travel from Middleton-on-the-Wolds, a small village on the outskirts of neighbouring Driffield. After all the heavy snow that had fallen on the days leading up to the match the pitch here looked in remarkably good condition with the playing area itself completely clear of the white stuff. In fact, the only bits still covered were along one side near to the players’ dug-outs and behind the goal at the far end. The match itself was a cracker and a terrific advert for both the players and the league. Harchester looked in control from the start and made home advantage count taking a comfortable 3-0 going into the break. However, to their credit the visitors came out fighting in the second half and quickly got back into the match reducing the deficit with two well-taken goals. This seemed to unnerve the hosts who managed to hang on to the points despite going a player down in the closing stages. The contest was expertly refereed by Richard Jubb who was appropriately attired wearing a matching woolly hat and trackie-bottoms throughout the contest. The game played in mostly dull and overcast conditions attracted a dozen or so spectators including well-respected and much-travelled local hopper Ian who was great company during my visit. Living only five-minutes-drive away the self-confessed Liverpool FC fan had actually been here many times before (also to watch Lambwatch FC members of the ERCL who coincidentally compete in the same division as United). He was well versed in all local things sporting and gave me the low down (and more) on all the clubs and grounds in the vicinity. A top bloke! Also joining us pitch-side was super-snapper Paul Linton who worked on the sports section at the Wolds Weekly, a newspaper/media business based in Beverley and Driffield. He had originally planned to double up this game with some rugby action but that had unsurprisingly fallen by the wayside too. He made us laugh when he expressed some concern as to how on a Saturday like this he was going to fill so many printed pages by featuring just this one game!! Despite the bitter weather, my visit to watch Harchester United FC at the Malet Lambert School was thoroughly enjoyable and one that I definitely would recommended to all football grounds enthusiasts not just as a back-up in adverse

conditions. On a day when it looked as though it would be football-free I was well chuffed just to get to a game I can tell you. Indeed, as luck would have it I think this was the ONLY match to be played in the entire league if not in the whole of East Yorkshire today. WebEd writes: ‘A short trip along the M62 and A1041 (by-passing the huge Drax Power Station) took me to The Fairfax, home of Selby Town FC for my footy fix today. Formed in 1919 and adopting the nickname The Robins, the club became founder members of the Yorkshire League. The golden eras came in the 1930’s and 1950’s where many league and cup titles were won. They also recorded the club’s highest attendance of 7000 when they played Bradford Park Avenue in the First Round of the FA Cup at their present home in Richard Street having moved here from The Bowling Green, their original ground on the other side of town. The Fairfax is within easy walking distance from the railway station in the town centre and is not far from the famous Selby Abbey one of only a few surviving churches from the medieval period. Built in 1069, it is a major landmark in the area. From first impressions you feel that the ground has seen better days. However, there is much old charm and character to admire here and enough appeal to make you feel at home at what is quite a large arena. Everywhere is decked out in red and white. The main social facilities including a lounge bar and refreshment area and an adjacent cramped but well-stocked club shop (selling stacks of programmes, badges etc) are all based along the nearside. It’s great to find several steps of old fashioned concrete terracing in the corner. The players’ entrance and dug-outs are positioned on the far side opposite. For spectators there is a small covered stand (no seats) set back in an elevated position behind the goal to the left with covered bench seating spanning the full length of the area behind the goal at the opposite end (to the right). Here large white letters spelling out the name Selby Town can be easily picked out from the red background behind. The game was a cracking advert for the league. Selby sitting in sixth place in the division before kick-off took an early lead when front-runner Sam Cable stabbed the ball home from close range after just ten minutes. With seconds of added time left they were pegged back by their visitors from Doncaster when Luke Williams had time and space to slot home. It was the locals who went home happy though when Liam Flanaghan fired home on seventy minutes after a neat counter attack to grab his side all three points and consolidate a place in the promotion play-off race. The match played on a heavily sanded and bobbly pitch (survived an 11am pitch inspection) held up well on what was a sunny but raw afternoon. Despite the freezing conditions a vociferous crowd of 130 was in attendance (this was in fact the highest in the division and third best in the entire NCEL). The club produced a cracking (no frills or glossy colour cover) home-spun programme that was jam-packed with local news, pen pictures, history of both clubs and all the essential stats for £1.50. A well-stocked menu serving both hot food and drink was on the menu and dispensed by three charming ladies throughout the afternoon. It is worth pointing out that like most clubs in this competition Selby Town publish a useful web site and up-to-date twitter feed (this was a superb resource helping to confirm that the match was going ahead). Hoppers may be interested to learn too that The Robins have ambitions to move from The Fairfax to a brand-new conference standard stadium on East Common next to Selby College at a future date. Watch this space! A visit here comes highly recommended to all footy travellers.

After a visit to watch Cleethorpes Town (v Bedworth United) in the table topping NPL Division One South fixture back in January I followed a similar route before heading to the docklands area of Immingham. After by-passing several large chemical depots along the A180 I soon arrived in the town centre and headed east to the Immingham Sports Complex. Beware though the reality is quite different to the picture its name conjours up! The ground entrance and large playing field is found at the end of a cul-de-sac tightly hemmed in among a myriad of houses forming what is a large residential estate. I was quite puzzled when two young lads wearing high-vis jackets greeted me at the end of Lydford Road and directed me to the field! Here, the rather basic

facilities consisting of a breeze-block building adorned in red and black club banners (depicting the Pilgrims logo) is set at an oblique angle close to the pitch and roped off all-round with tape that formed a mini players-tunnel next to the clubhouse. This building incorporates changing rooms for both sets of players and officials and a tea bar which was doing a brisk trade before kick-off. There is little else at pitch-side apart from a row of houses running parallel to the near side touchline and the setting is pretty soulless to be honest. Today’s game saw the visit of league leaders Ruston Sports (from Lincoln) to the ISC. The game played in mainly dull and overcast conditions started at a frantic pace and saw the home side (in fifth place) come back twice to equalise with their second going in during the dying minutes of play to salvage a well-earned 2-2 draw, a fair result on the balance of play which wasn’t too exciting at times. The game attracted almost forty spectators including fellow hoppers Alan Wiggins and blind traveller John Stancombe who was well received by the club and given terrific hospitality by the club chairman who helped to provide lifts to and from Habrough rail station located just a few miles down the road. I also met another snapper Malc who had come up from Lincoln to watch his grandson playing for Ruston. A selection of his pictures taken during the afternoon are also included in the album gallery. Cheers my friend. Paper-chasers will be very interested to know that the club issue a cracking little 16-page colour programme priced £1 for all home matches. This was sold from the tea bar where hot drinks were dispensed for 50p (including a free chocolate bar) by two cheerful young ladies. Although the facilities here are pretty basic at present I certainly found everyone associated with the club to be extremely friendly and welcoming. No doubt the lure of a match day programme might attract some of you to the club for a game in the future. I would certainly recommend a visit to the ISC to all football travellers. The joys of hopping in Humberside (or should that be North Lincolnshire?) will definitely continue’. As an aside it is also worth adding that Immingham Town FC publish a very useful and regularly updated twitter account which I flagged up before setting out for the game. Apart from the usual match details the club made reference to hopper John Stancombe and provided a link to an article which appeared in the Guardian newspaper last year. Many of you may have read this but for those who haven’t done so (like myself) it is worth checking out at: https://www.theguardian.com/football/2017/may/15/blind-groundhopper-non-league-football-john-stancombe Friday 16th February – TT No.91: Brian Buck – Touch and Go! Saturday saw a trip to Halle where Hallescher were taking on VFL Osnabruck at the Erdgas Sportpark. It was a dour 90 minutes but the home fans went home happy after a 1-0 victory. The ground is relatively new (2011) but when built the walls to the old stadium were retained’. ‘Our 2nd game of the weekend was in a city and at a stadium that has been on my wish list for a long time. Dresden as a city and Dynamo at the DDV did not disappoint! superb club shop. Average game with Harrow winning comfortably to send their small band of supporters home happy’. ‘Sunday morning saw Mandy and I heading through the tunnel to France and Belgium. Our destination was Aalst where (surprise, surprise) there was a footie match planned. The bad weather from up North had now arrived down South and we drove to Aalst in challenging conditions before parking up at the Pierre Cornellisstadion. First bad news of the day (especially for Mandy) was that the Christmas Market outside the stadium was closing-down due to the snow. At this point I was not worried about the game being off as fans and stewards were all milling around as normal. However, it was not to be with the ref finally calling the game 40 minutes before kick-off. Not even Santa (see pics) could save this one! Excellent venue and a bumper crowd of 32852 including over 14,000 Rangers fans. First half was pretty poor with Hearts Kyle Lafferty scoring from a Beckhamesque free kick being the highlight. Second half was better and saw Rangers dominate to win 3-1. Veteran Kenny Miller was the difference, he scored twice and set up the third goal with a superb pass. The local hostelries and eateries did a roaring trade and nearly half the crowd went home happy. Trains behaved and because of the early KO I was home before 10. Decent day out’. Gary reports (via E-Mail sent on 22/10): ‘As of Thursday my plan for yesterday was Darwen v Marske in the Vase. However, on Thursday the mystic Sponge called to say that the weather was horrible up North (no surprise there!) and we should look East on Saturday. Wise words from an old man as the game at Darwen was postponed. No such problems at Norwich CBS where on a sunny afternoon the home side beat higher level opponents Oxhey Jets 1-0. Thursday 5th October – Latest Images: Gary Spooner – Don’t miss our supremo’s mouth-watering pictures from a terrific North-West footy double featuring Ashton Athletic (v Chorley) in the FA Cup 3Q tie and then on to Daisy Hill (v St Helens Town) in the North-West Counties League Division One…both played on 30/09/17…now added to the FGIF album gallery... Gary reports (via E-Mail on 01/10): ‘The magic of the FA Cup was evident at Ashton Athletic yesterday as a club record crowd of 610 plus the BBC camera (deliberately singular!) attended the tie v Chorley which saw Ashton Athletic in the 3rd qualify-ing round for the first time in their history. A hard-fought cup tie which took place for a long time in driving rain was witnessed. Ashton were certainly not embar-rassed against opponents 3 steps higher in the pyramid though Chorley reached the last qualifying round with a belting goal in the last ten minutes. An excellent start to the day’.

‘After the early KO at Ashton there were plenty of options for my 2nd game. Ash-ton Town would have been the easy choice but I'd already been there. I chose Daisy Hill on the basis that there would (hopefully) be parking as they generally get low crowds. Yesterday the attendance was 56. One slight hiccup was driving di-rectly past Leigh Centurions (another choice but I'd been there too) who were con-testing the million-pound game. The Leigh fans on the way to the ground were in buoyant mood (not so happy afterwards!) but most of the cars had already arrived so it was relatively stress free. I arrived at Daisy Hill just three minutes before KO and was buying a much-needed coffee as the game kicked off. Despite the fact that it was still raining it was a tremendous afternoon's entertainment. St Helens raced into a 3-0 lead before Daisy Hill pulled a goal back just before half time. The second half saw the home team pull another goal back and an equaliser looked on the cards. St Helens weathered (literally) the onslaught and then took a 4-2 lead. Daisy Hill scored in the last minute but had no further time to equalise. A cracking game and an excellent day out’.

The home side took the lead with an outrageous lob (see pics) only for Blankenberge to equalise before half time. After the break, the visitors were much the better side and eventually ran out 3-1 winners. Admission at Wervikhovestraat was 8 euros to sit, 6 euros to

stand and there was a free programme and teamsheet available. Covered seating on one side on the ground with covered terracing on the other. Excellent way to spend a Saturday night’.

‘Sunday afternoon saw us at the Mirakelstadion, home of KRC Waregem. No mira-cles on this occasion for the home side though it was a very entertaining game. Varsenare took the lead midway through the first half then Waregem equal-ised just before half-time. An inspired substitution by the home side saw the sub score to put Waregem 2-1 up with around 10 mins to play. Alas, they couldn't hold on and the visitors won it with an 88th minute penalty. Two large seated stand ei-ther side of the ground. Admission again 8 euros. No programmes or team sheets were available. Definitely the first time I've ever seen chickens watching the game!’.

Both sides had won 3 from 3 going into this game and a tight first half ended goalless. Second half saw United score 3 to take the spoils’.

…and (on 10/09): ‘A local, local derby for me yesterday. Definitely a game of con-trasts both on and off the pitch. I arrived and left in bright sunshine. However, during the game there was a deluge of monsoon proportions! On the pitch Kirby Muxloe dominated the first half to lead 2-0 at the break. Anstey pulled one back second half and looked likely to score an equaliser before a dreadful defensive howler gave Kirby Muxloe a 3rd goal. Still time for Anstey to pull one back to pro-vide a nervy final few minutes for Kirby Muxloe. As usual good entertainment pro-vided by the Vase’.

family man who lived in the Stevenage area, was an avid non-league football fol-lower as well as speedway fanatic. He was also a regular contributor to our site over many years and would tirelessly send his news, reports, programme info as well as photos from his extensive travels around the south midlands particularly taking in matches in Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire. I had the pleasure of meeting Bob on many occasions along with his grandson Stephen and always found him to be great company with a wry sense of humour. I am sure he will be remembered fondly by all who met him and would like to express on behalf of everyone con-nected with FGIF our deepest condolences to his family and friends. RIP Bob you will be greatly missed.

Thursday 10th August – Latest Images: WebEd – Welcome back! I hope that you all had a wonderful summer break and are now looking forward to another exciting new football season. I’m sure for many sports fans who like myself have been fol-lowing the feast of televised sport covering Wimbledon, the Tour de France, Women’s Euros, the Open Golf and the latest World Athletics Championships, it will be nice to get back on the road (or rail) again to watch some football and of course tick off some more new grounds along the way. With some much to look forward it goes without saying that here at FGIF we would love to share your news, reports and ground pictures. If you have been to see a great game or visited a cracking little ground that you think might be of interest to other fans then please get in touch. From roped off pitch to international stadium it doesn’t matter, you can send us an e-mail, use our IMS service or even a post a tweet!! On behalf of the FGIF team I hope that you all have a great season wherever you go. Best wishes, Martin.
