Dear Friends,

Thank you for your excellent response

to the survey. The Transition Team is

learning of the results and will be

sharing observations in future weeks. On June 2

in Spencer Hall following worship. Worship will

be 9:30 – 10:10 a.m. Conversations will be 10:15-

11:15 a.m. All are invited to gather in Spencer Hall

around tables for guided conversation and

refreshments. Each Sunday will have a different

focus so plan to attend both Sundays. The sermons

SESSION HIGHLIGHTS

From April 23, 2013

Plans are in process for members of our church to attend this exciting event! The Big Tent combines ten national conferences under one roof, gathering thousands of Presbyterian pastors, elders, and other church leaders to study, share, worship, and fellowship, and to build up the body of Christ. It’s been called “a giant Presbyterian family reunion” – and the 2013 Big Tent brings that reunion to Louisville, Kentucky, home of the PC(USA)’s national offices since 1988. Please contact Rev. Jonathan Evans at 239.262.1311 ext. 224 or [email protected] for more information.

Survey results have been received. They were reviewed at the

Transition Team meeting on May 20, during which time questions were framed for the Team’s conference call

conversation with our consultant, Holy Cow Consulting.

This conversation took place on Wednesday, May 22 in the

pastor’s office.

Pastor Nominating Committee

The Congregational Nominating Committee is in the process of assembling a slate of nominees for the Pastor Nominating Committee (PNC). All active members of the Congregation who desire to serve on the PNC are requested to notify Patty Rutzler at [email protected] and provide the following information: Name, address, phone number, e-mail address and a brief statement declaring your reasons for wishing to be considered for service on the PNC, as well as a brief statement of your Faith. Persons submitting the names of others to be candidates for service on the PNC must first obtain the consent of those so considered and supply the same information, described above, for each prospective candidate.

Presbyterian Women By the time you read this,

Presbyterian Women will have

ended their season with a barbeque

on May 1, we will have said good-

bye to friends for the summer and

have a whole new set of officers.

It has been deep-down good for me

to be the Moderator of PW these last

two years. I have enjoyed the

camaraderie, the blast of ideas,

learning and participating with

many ladies that I didn’t know

before. We have had wonderful

lunches, great programs, and

meaningful Bible study. This past

year we have studied about the

meaning of Christian community

from I & II Peter, I, II, III John, and

Jude. Entitled “Living Stones, The

Making of An Eternal Fellowship”,

we have come to understand this

metaphor as it pertains to building

and supporting each other. Our

Book Club discussions on some of

our favorite best-selling novels tied

into our Bible Study. We have

pulled together to serve this

congregation and each other.

We have also served others. The

PW have collected blankets for

Immokalee Friendship House, made

a monthly donation to Collier

Harvest, purchased sneakers for

Laces of Love, and participated in

the PW Thank and Birthday

Offerings internationally.

We sent checks to many of our local

agencies and each month fed the

hungry through donations. Our Sew

& Sews were busy making dresses

and aprons, sewing and knitting for

many of the less fortunate.

And we had fun. There was a

birthday party in March. We invited

our friends, neighbors and men for a

Christmas concert and luncheon,

celebrated our Circles, enjoyed a

traditional Tea with hats and scones,

learned a lot about orchids, and

honored the veterans in our

congregation.

PW bake and serve the cookies you

eat after worship every Sunday. It’s

a labor of love. I read once that

“love is what’s in the room with you

at Christmas if you stop opening

presents and listen”. Be sure you

hear the love.

Ann Goodnight has taken over the

position of Moderator. She has

some new faces on the Coordinating

Team. They will knock our socks

off!

Thank you to everyone who came

on this ride with me. It has been

interesting and sometimes full of

surprises. So I just need to say

thank you to the amazing staff of

this church, to our pastors who

facilitated our Bible Study and

support us in every way, and to

everyone in PW for being so open

and encouraging.

The PW organization is loving,

mission-oriented, inclusive, and full

of talented, caring women who

share selflessly. We believe in the

power of prayer to change, heal, and

lead. Our Cluster Leader from

Peace River Presbytery says we

(FPC) are the shining example of

what PW should be. I think she is

right!

Betty Mangos

A very special thank you is sent to

our outgoing Moderator, Betty

Mangos, and other officers leaving

the PW Coordinating Team, for

their dedication and energy given

these past two years. Wonderful

job!

We will all anticipate our program,

Bible Study and activities for the

new calendar which we will list in

the next Outreach and website.

Please save the date of July 31 for

our second annual

at noon in Spencer Hall. Come for

fellowship and food. No business

meeting. We will have a “hands on

mission project”. We will also be

collecting school supplies for needy

children.

Another later summer program will

be a Bible Study to be held on the

travels of Paul. Watch the Sunday

bulletin for more information on

both.

We wish those away from FPC a

wonderful summer and safe travels.

Keith Gahagan, Mission Committee Chair, [email protected] Mission

By Gretchen Oakley

As a little girl one of my favorite fairy tales was the Elves and the Shoemaker. I remember trying to be really good so that in the morning I would find that the elves had done all my chores. Well, I guess I was never good enough because every morning those dirty dishes I had forgotten to wash, the wrinkled clothes I hadn’t picked up and the bathtub ring I had ignored were right where I had left them. But, on my hunt for another Mission Action subject, I discovered that First Presbyterian Church has its own “bunch of female elves.” They appear upstairs about 10 a.m. every other Thursday and go to work taking care of children and adults all over Naples, Collier County, Florida, the United States, and the world. These are Elves Extraordinaire!!! If you happen to be wandering the halls of the Education wing on a Thursday morning, you may hear the whirring of sewing machines, the snip, snip of scissors and the gentle sound of laughter and chatting. It is the hideout of the elves that call themselves the Sew and Sews.

JULY MISSION ADVENTURE

Meet us in the kitchen of St. Matthew’s House Tuesday, July 23 to prepare and serve dinner to the residents. We will work there from about 3 to 6 p.m. and welcome all chefs and kitchen workers. No experience necessary. There will be a meeting before hand to plan the menu. Be part of our crew – from sauce makers to ice cream scoopers. For more information, or to sign on, contact Betty Plum at [email protected], or call 239.732.8799.

Let’s help GRACE PLACE get ready for their summer camp! Join us on Saturday, June 8 at 4300 21st Ave SW, Naples. We will help clean and organize their facilities. Join us as we help our mission partner in Golden Gate. Please call the office to sign up. You can also contact Rev. Jonathan Evans at 239.262.1311 or [email protected] if you have any questions.

One Thursday I was able to corner two of the top elves, Mary Burns and Marcella Coe. According to Marcella, she is the “techie” and can fix any sewing machine problem. Mary handles the paper work, keeping track of all the work projects they handle and this keeps her very busy. These projects began … well, the beginnings of the Sew and Sews seem to be lost in the midst of time. In the beginning the women met in Jean Chenowyth’s home where they busied themselves making hospital gowns out of men’s white shirts. (I wonder if they opened in the front or the back.)

Then maybe in the 60’s or it might have been in the 70’s the Sew and Sews became a reality. It was in 1972 that Marcella married Bob Coe. As a couple or maybe before they married they became good friends with Ruth and Prosser Speer. Marcella thinks they had to have met square dancing. These are lively elves! Marcella and Ruth liked to sew so more projects appeared—Bell Ringer table covers. Marcella whipped up 6’ and 8’ table covers for Spencer Hall. About this time an organization called Miracles in Action, which has built 40 schools in Guatemala as of this year, advertised a need. They wanted clothing for the children. So the Sew and Sews really began to sew. Mary Burns said that they used to make in a month an average of 10-15 aprons, and 20-25 knit caps

because it gets cold in the mountains of Guatemala. They also were making 20-30 dresses for young girls in Tanzania. I am sad to report that through the years the

Sew and Sews membership has decreased and they now average 5-6 dresses, 4-5 aprons, and 5-6 caps. Nevertheless, their handiwork can be found around the church. Marcella made a lively

banner that hangs next to the door of their workshop. It is made from T-shirts that were part of Vacation Bible School.

Over at a table all by herself you will find Lu Neumann quietly trimming piles and piles of cancelled stamps. She wasn’t trimming the soup labels, but I’d imagine she’ll get to them one of these meetings.

Lu joined the group in 1992 for the fellowship. Her stamp project is part of a greater effort. When she has a large bag full of stamps, they are sent to Shell Point Village in Ft. Myers where they are combined with stamps collected by other organizations in the area. At Shell Point the stamps are sorted and the paper backing removed. Then stamp dealers come to buy the stamps. The money received from the sales is used to buy Sunday School curriculum for Latin

American churches. Through the years this effort has raised between $50,000-$75,000.

The Sew and Sews have a good group of fun, mission loving women. During the season the membership grows. Doris Norgart, Lu Neumann, Mary Burns, Marcella Coe, Susan Stafford, Gail Clark, Katie Pennock, Phyllis Kruger and others move in and out as the seasons change and they are available to stitch, snip, and laugh. They really don’t look like my childish visions of elves but they work like I had imagined my elves would work. The group is getting smaller each year and Mary and Marcella worry about who will do the work when they are gone. Sandy is a regular visitor as she goes about the church making sure all is well with the building. Sandy has the answer to their concern. She says, ”You’re not allowed to go.” These women have to stay and carry on their very special form of Mission Action- First Pres Style. With help from you and other potential “church elves” their work

will go on and on and on.

COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE

We would like to take this opportunity to share a fairly new active committee that has been functioning for over a year now. Committee members consist of Jan Garner, Barb Church, Bill Barton and Bill Kearney with Pastors David Horne and Jonathan Evans as ex-officio. We have been designated as a “sub” committee of Evangelism and their new chair, Joan Gust, also joins us at our meetings. Other church staff members Sharman Pfaus, Kathleen Law and Brice Gerlach have and will continue to be involved along with our new Director of Children and Family Ministries, Andi Plueddeman. The goals and objectives of the committee are to identify and implement the most effective ways to advertise and promote First Presbyterian Church to the community at large. This may include the effective use of the news media as well as other sources through the use of the computers, smart

phones and tablets, that will assist in providing as much information about our church as we can. The ultimate goal of this committee is to begin to generate an increase in church membership with special attention to young families, children and young adults through the use of these media sources. The time between now and next fall will be to identify what is felt to be the most effective resources that are available to us, tap into those resources and assess the results of those efforts in hopes that goals and objectives will begin to be achieved. We would welcome any input expertise that any of our church members may have to assist us as we move ahead. Contact Bill Kearney, committee chair at 239.348.2871. Watch for some exciting new announcements by periodically checking your e-mail and mailed news items that will be sent out to all members. This fall First Presbyterian Church will initiate some new phases of church activity.

If you have particular questions in relation to church budget and expenses, please speak

to a member of the Finance Committee or contact Michele Martin, our church

accountant, 239.262.1311, ext. 242. The Finance Committee members are: Jan Gazdic

(chair), Terry Brennan, Lloyd Doerflinger, Don Grandi, Bob King, Karen Martin, Bill

Stafford and Tom Stevens.

WELCOME NEW MEMBER Pat Gerding was received as a new member of First Presbyterian Church on May 5, 2013, via letter of transfer from First Presbyterian Church of Ottawa, IL.

What does the word Evangelism mean? Actually, it has a variety of meanings. All in all it means preaching the gospel. Preaching can be done in numerous ways: sharing the Good News; sharing your Christian faith; having missionary zeal; serving with a purpose or activity. Currently we need your zeal for actively serving the church by volunteering for church events. Right now there is a need for people to serve coffee, and clean up afterwards for June, July and August. Please call Joan Gust, Evangelism Committee Chair, 239.262.4488. As Winston Churchill said,

“Going to church does not make you a Christian any more than standing in a garage makes you a car.”

Congratulations

to our Preschool Director,

Ashley Houk on her recent

nomination for the Collier

County, Faith Based Provider

seat on the Board of The Early

Learning Coalition of Southwest

Florida.

First Presbyterian Preschool is still

enrolling for the 2013-2014 school year. We currently have

a few openings in each of our age groups, including the

VPK program. Spots will fill quickly as the summer

progresses so please contact us if you are interested in

placement opportunities. You may reach me at
