Hello everyone…Your fearless leader is back and I hope eveyone is enjoying the warmthand sunshine we Minnesotans so rightfully deserve.

Did everyone enjoy an early spring ride?I got mine in on the sandblast expressway 35W.Reporting on some events: the Cycle World Show was a huge success with an impressivedisplay of vintage machines (we handed out a lot of Farmington flyers and snagged a few newmembers too!).The club participated in our first ever Donnie Smith show at the St. Paul River Center- thanksto Sean O’Neil and everyone who brought a bike and worked the crowd, and finally, the VikingChapter mustered a dozen volunteers and we handled all the bikes at the annual AldrichArena spring motorcycle auction. The club earned some cash, some good publicity and again we passed out flyers and didsome recruiting too.

Moot’s Point continuedThanks so much to those who devoted theday to help the club on our first ever presenceat this great motorcycle event. About half thevolunteers for this event were club officers andthe other half were first year members! A veryspecial thanks to you new guys…You are ourfuture!During the Friday night auction preview, Ispoke with a guy I had met before and he toldme he had been a Viking member for years. He apologized for letting his membershiplapse and said he would send in a renewalbecause he wants to at least support the clubfinancially. I pointed out to him that by payinghis $10.00 in dues he would receive $11.00worth of newsletters and if he were not goingto attend events that he would save us moneyif he did not re-up his membership. Of courseI was just kidding him but did tell him thatwhat we need more than his $10.00 is hispresence at monthly meetings and variousevents throughout the year. This exchange started me thinking that whatmakes this club vital and alive is theparticipation of it’s members.Pay your ten bucks and we will give you yourmoney’s worth and more but you need toredeem the rewards in person!

So what’s Moot’s Point? Participate!

By the time you receive this second newsletterof 2006, the Farmington meet will be just afew short weeks away. 2006 will see someexciting new changes for the Farmingtonevent - this will be the first year of an on sitemotorcycle auction where you can buy or sellthose old bones or those classic parts, bikes, restored machines, memorabilia, etc. There is still plenty of time and room for yourentries. Some other new things you may notice thisyear: we will provide a comfotable lounge areawhere you can relax, drink a cup of joe, reada MC magazine or shoot the breeze with like-minded MC people; there will be anassortment of MC related posters, flags andpictures that will augment the beautiful bikeswe see displayed.Multiple tech sessions will be offered as wellas an improved banquet.Your hard working club officers arealready working on an even better2007 event! You will notice that this month’s newslettercontains a questionaire; the people who planfuture Viking events could greatly benefit fromyour input so please fill it out and return it tome pronto.During the first week of August 2006 some ofour members make the annual pilgramage toSturgis. If you are like me and prefer shorterrides then you may want to join the Vikingchapter on a one day ride down to the AMA

National Hillclimb Championship August 5th inRedwing MN.Check out www.indianheadmc.org for details.Roger Rimnac told me this event was verypopular years ago with the Viking membersso we thought we would bring it back. And finally the 2006 Garage get-togethershave been planned. The May event was atJim Kajola’s house, June 29th will be at PaulDavidson’s house in Eden Prairie, July 15th

will be at Joe Anania’s place in Apple Valleyand at my house in Bloomington on August12th.Joe was a NWA mechanic who is now tryingto make a living working on motorcycles.Joe’s garage and mine are similar in tworespects: we both have a workbench and weboth have a firm policy, “no cars allowed”!Summer’s here! Bugs, Betty’s, rides, races, first Thursdays, dead batteries andblind lizards!

Don’t forget the 3rd Wednesday in July isthe Annual Ride To Work Day, but reallyany day is a good day to ride to workbecause:1. Riding to work is fun.2. Riding to work reduces traffic and parking congestion.3. Riding uses less fuel than an automobile.4. Riding to work leaves one alert and energized.5. Riding to work results in less pollution than commuting in a larger vehicle.6. It is less destructive and road surfaces and bridges.7. It gets you to work (and back home) faster.8. And lastly, it promotes motorcyling.

Take a photo of you and your favorite oldbike and send it to Rick Shunk. Who knowsyou may appear in the AntiqueMotorcycle’s annual “Ride ToWork” article,

April 15, 2006WE’RE MOVING!!by Deb Riggs and Jim Kojola

Pronto pups, cheese-curds and BeerGarden- that’s what people think of

when they think “State Fair.” After next year, people will start thinking, “Viking ChapterNational Meet,” old motorcycles and partsgalore!

That’s right, starting in June 2007 the VikingChapter National Meet will be held at theMinnesota State Fairgrounds instead of theFarmington location. Wow!The goal of our move is to offer an opportunityfor a larger number of participants andvendors, provide a more central location andbetter facilities for the visitors to our NationalMeet and increase interest in antiquemotorcycles! After much thought and discussion, review offeasibility figures, lists of pros vs. cons, tripsto St. Paul and meetings with officials at theFairgrounds, the Viking Chapter Boardmembers were able to negotiate a greatarrangement. The weekend we have lockedin is the 24th weekend of the year which is theweekend just before “Back to the Fifties”

at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds.

The Progress Building and the adjoiningcampground will be our new home. We willbe near the Snelling Avenue entrance. TheProgress building is huge (190ft X160ft) withlarge windows to let in natural lighting. Badweather will never be a factor again since thisbuilding can offer plenty of room for bikedisplays and inside vending.

The campground is directly next to theProgress building. The camping area islarge, completely fenced in and offerselectrical hook-ups. It can accommodate bothvenders and campers and, as our Club attractsnew members, this State Fairgrounds areacan expand.

Although we will miss the fun and small-townatmosphere the Farmington location hasbrought us over the years rising problems suchas the increasing cost of the lease, difficultymanaging the many new entrances to theFarmington grounds and the limited exposurethe Farmington location offers the Club madeus look at other options.

We never thought a reasonable opportunityat the Minnesota State Fairgrounds would beavailable to us, but here it is!So, start thinking State Fairgrounds and greatready for our very own “GreatMinnesota (Antique Motorcycle)Get-Together!”

??WHO’S THIS MYSTERY BIKER??

Here’s an oldphoto of myselftaken why backin about 1977with my“chopper” forthe mysteryphoto.Looking everybit the “alongcame Bronsontype”, can youguess who thismystery bikeis?

His name spelled in pig-latin is Aveda Ootma.See page 8 for the answer.

On April 1st (no foolin!), theViking Chapter was hired by the

MidAmerica Auctions to pushbikes at their vintage motorcycleauction at the Aldrich Arena.

It was a great time to check outover a hundred old bikes, hangout with other enthusiasts andearn $750.00 for the club! Atprevious auctions, they hademployed jocks from local highschool sports teams who lackedthe experience in moving old bikesand lacked the dedication to throwthemselves under a 1928 IndianScout 101. Luckily, there were nodropped bikes and no injuries toclub members that a few tubes ofBen-Gay couldn’t solve.

We also staffed an information booth allday and were able to hook in a couple newmembers.

It was a great time had by all and anothergreat way to get our club interacting withthe broader motorcycle enthusiastcommunity.

This Auction was a huge success.About 10 to 14 club membersshowed up.

Veterans’ Home Visit-Wednesday July 12, 2006

by Keith Peters

On Wednesday evening, July 12, ride anantique motorcycle and meet at the

Minnesota Veterans’ Home at 5101Minnehaha Avenue South, in SouthMinneapolis at 7 PM. The VA home is acrossthe river from St. Paul’s Highland Park Fordplant. For this fourth year in a row we’ll visitwith the veterans living there and show offour bikes. Maybe Paul Meisel will bring hisice cream side car and pass out bars againthis year.

After the visit we’ll ride west along MinnehahaParkway four miles to stop in for a burger &brew at Adrian’s Tavern, 4812 ChicagoAvenue South (telephone 612/824-4011.)Strange things happen there. Last year theowner gave us complementary steak tips andDave Moot was talked into running forPresident!

Directions to the Veterans’ Home: Fromhighway 55 (Minnehaha Avenue), head easton 54th street 0.7 miles, cross the bridge andgo left/north 0.1 mile to the two-story sandcolored building there marked “MainEntrance.” Telephone 612/721-0600. Younever know who will show up. Former VikingChapter President Joe White cameinto town from Deming New Mexicoto join us for the evening last year.

The Mighty one from the movie “The Motorcycle Diaries” goeson the block.

April 1st. the MidAmerica Auction

It was reported that the people running this auction quite impressedwith the care ourmembers gave eachbike coming up forauction.

It was alsomentioned thatthey’d like to seeour Club back againnext year doingwhat it does best.

“Taking care of oldbikes!”

MidAmerica had an impressive line up of bikes to beauctioned.

Once again, there was a great turnout of bikes to display for the

CycleWorld show and we’d like to thankall those members who brought bikes todisplay and those members that mannedthe booth over the weekend. Yourparticipation is greatly appreciated and wehope everyone had a great time.

The line up of bikes at CycleWorld thisyear was nothing short of impressive!!!

Sturgis ’06by Keith Peters

The Viking Chapter again has tent campingreservations for the KOA in Deadwood, S.D.

for Sturgis week, Sunday night August 6through Wednesday night August 9, 2006.The cost is $16.50/night, up $1.50 from last year.Anyone wishing to arrive early or stay late cancall “toll-free reservations” at 1-800-562-0846.(The KOA’s direct number is 605-578-3830.) Asalways, it is requested that if you invite a friendto camp with the Viking Chapter, they shouldsend in their application and membership fee tojoin the national AMCA before leaving for Sturgis.

Friends are also invited to join the VikingChapter, of course, but need to be at least AMCAmembers to take advantage of the Viking/KOAcamping. The KOA prefers that we do not bringcars or trailers and expect to park or store themthere, with their limited parking space.

A bunch of the usual suspects will meet forbreakfast at the Hilltop Restaurant in Excelsioron departure day, Saturday August 5. Smallgroups start leaving around 8 A.M. andreconvene in the bar in Evan MN for peanuts, beer and photos. If it is like most years, smallgroups will work on what breaks down along theroad, then drag the sorry carcasses into campat the city park at Wessington Springs, S.D.,where riders can catch a shower and swim inthe City’s pool. Last year we had about thebiggest crowd ever at Wessington, around 20bikes.

For a most dramatic entrance to Sturgis last year, there was a lightning storm that started thegrasslands on fire just as we rode into town. Werode between the thunderstorms and grass firesas the fire truck raced out of town to put out thefires. Tom Jones drove his 250 cc BMW, SteveDoeden rode his Bobber Chief, and three othersrode antiques. Ralph Smith used Sturgis week

for teaching our first Deutschlandermembers Lea and Garitt Keller commonbiker week English words and phrasesthey don’t teach you in school.

Here is a change from previous years.Because of such a low Viking Chapterturnout, the Board decided not to fund theWednesday evening cookout and fish fry.So, folks wishing to continue that traditionwill need to pony up to buy the plates, salads, beverages, etc., and will NOT bereimbursed by the Viking Chapter. Lastyear 10 fisherpersons caught nine troutand Ron “Grease” Garren served asmaster chef. Grease also caught fish andwas in charge of bait. Did thatmake him also the master-baiter?

For those of you that use msn.com asan internet provider, here is an interestingway to keep in touch with other members andshare photos from some of your rides andadventures. Their newest version ofmesseger has a internet site you can set upcalled “My Spaces” that requires noprogramming experience and can be donein about 5 minutes and most of all, it’s FREE.It’s a great way to share photos from ridesand experiences with other Club members. You can also limit who has access to it aswell.I set a site up in about 5 minutes and addedto it as I had time. To let other members knowyou have a site set up it allows you to e-mailthem with the address. Here’s an example of a site I set up if youcare to access it and see what it’s all about. It has some photos I took at last year’sSturgis Ralley and stops at Deadwood.

The site name is:http://spaces.msn.com/gregsgarage1Who knows, we might even feature your sitein the future in this newsletter.

Here’s an interesting site to check out ifyou’re interested in old motorcycle photos.

The Minnesota Historical Society has a sitethat has some great old photos of the earlydays of motorcycling in the state. It also hassome photos from the Roy Egberg collection.(Roy was an early Club member who owneda motorcycle shop in this area for a numberof years)One photo I thought was fantastic was onetaken of a pair flappers in the 1920’s on 7thstreet. this was in front of the old Garricktheater which was located across the streetfrom Dayton’s (now Marshall Field’s)department store and the Radisson Hotel.

Some of you old-timers may remember thistheater later become the Forum Cafeteria and when the buildings on that street weretorn down in the 1980’s to make way for anoffice highrise the interior was saved and later

A couple of biker Babes assembling on 7thstreet in Downtown Minneapolis in the 1920’s.

The “forerunners?” of our Club assemble onNicollet Avenue in Downtown Minneapolis fora road ralley. “Back in the Day” when therewasn’t anything antique this new machinecalled a “motorcycle”.
