A life in a week at Bishop Perowne.
Extracts from the daily log of our College
Monday, 28th May 2012
7.30am All set for the Church School’s OFSTED Inspection ……. The video loop of our
College life is playing in reception, the sun is shining, just need to meet the Inspector
now.
7.45am An email alert from OFSTED. Our report is now available. We download it
quickly and read the final version for the first time. Good …. Outstanding ….. Good ……
Outstanding. We hear that the Church School Inspector has arrived. We meet him,
somewhat nervously, as we are aiming for outstanding judgements in every category.
This matters so much to us as SIAS (statutory inspection of aided schools) cuts right to
the heart of our community. The inspector’s focus on relationships, personal growth, our
distinctive Christina ethos and the quality of Religious Education and Worship. It’s all
about how we ‘grow’ young people.
8.30am Our first meeting goes well. All staff have met the inspector and our Act of Col-
lective Worship begins … Year 11 dance, students sing and play, our candle is lit to re-
member Tony Ballard and Jason Williams. We offer each other the peace and support
of the Tanzanian handshake, our students are superb and respectful ….
9.00am The inspector begins a hectic and rigorous schedule, observing lessons, inter-
viewing staff, students, parents and partners, scrutinising documentation. He asks
some tough questions but is very fair.
3.00pm Feedback to our Chair of Governors and myself. Then a two week wait until we
can share the judgements with our College community.
4.00pm Planning for the week ahead with the Senior Leadership Team and review of a
successful half term. Academic interventions with Year 10 and 11 have gone well. Data
shows that students are reaching their target grades. Share list of jobs ‘to be done’.

A life in a week at Bishop Perowne
Tuesday, 29th May 2012
8.30am Year 11 gather outside the Sports Hall for their English Examination. We are glad that it’s cooler this morning.
We greet students and wish them well. Last year’s results were outstanding. This is a new syllabus but students are
well prepared.
9.00am I show a prospective parents and student around College. We go into some lessons. They are amazed at how
calm things are and how ‘green’ the site is and how much space we have. Watch tennis on the astro turf longing to join
in.
10.00am Meet with my P.A. to deal with a huge postbag and arrange distribution of the OFSTED report. Work with a
parent Governor on the publicity for our Open Day on Friday, 15th June. Receive news of a former student who is 75
years old, now living in Australia who is arranging to visit us on the 15th June……
10.40am Meet with the Community Captains who are doing such a good job organising our Jubilee Day. Suddenly have
a ‘good idea!’. Why not give red, white and blue cake to everyone on Thursday to celebrate our OFSTED report and
Jubilee?. Rachael, our Catering Manager, is very clam when I reply ’the whole College’ to her question ’how much
would you like?’ The wonderful canteen staff willingly rise to the challenge. Debbie is all set to make the best cake
ever.
11.00am Show an applicant for a post around College. She is amazed by the strength of relationships. Talk with Year
11 as they leave the examination. They seem happy.
1.30pm Meet with Teaching Assistants to explain our plans for developing provision in our Learning Base.
2.00pm Join Revd. Peter, Mr Bethel and Year 11 students to discuss plans for the Leaver’s Eucharist. I love their ideas.
They tell me they don’t want to leave.
2.45pm I am able to share the news of our Church School Inspection with staff.
3.00pm Meet with the Senior Leadership Team to begin raising attainment planning for next year.
Wednesday, 30th May 2012
8.30am Lead an Act of Collective Worship
9.00am Meet with a prospective parent and student. Offer them a conducted tour. Spend time in classes. They bump
into a student they already know who welcomes them warmly. They confirm their application.
10.00am Observe some lessons and look through students’ books checking the marking and progress.
11.00am Receive feedback on Student Council from the new Head Boy/Head Girl Team. I’m impresses by how well
they do this and the ideas they have. I suggest they construct a survey. Run through presentations with more students.
11.20am Teach my Year 11 English class for the last time. Reminisce, sign leaver’s books, take photo, manage not to
cry. They have been lovely.
12.30pm Deal with the post. Some very kind messages from parents regarding the OFSTED Inspection, passport forms
to sign and the Leaver’s Eucharist Order of Service to finalise.
1.00pm Attend a meeting with other Church School Headteachers. Helpful and informative. We discuss school funding
and OFSTED Inspections.
6.00pm At a standstill on the motorway, returning to College for the Music Evening which we always enjoy. The rehears-
als sounded stunning.
College Community Page 3
A life in a week at Bishop Perowne
7.00pm Still at a standstill. Late
7.15pm Creep in at the back. ‘Teddy bears picnic’, by the flute and choir, sounds great. Ollie’s song and I really melt ,
forgetting the long delay (which I later discussed was caused by a cow on the carriageway).
10.00pm So proud. Our students surpassed their previous best giving so freely of their love of music. Sad that Year 11
are leaving. Parent again show their pleasure in our OFSTED report.
Thursday, 31st May 2012
8.00am The College canteen is transformed with bunting and students arrive ‘themed’ in red, white and blue. Such a
good-humoured atmosphere
Greet candidates for the post of Head of Music and begin a challenging day involving student interviews, lesson
observations, formal interviews, written tasks, leading a rehearsal and observing Mr Bethel teach. I consult with our stu-
dents to gather their views on the candidates I have met, impressed by their incisive perceptions.
Visit a number of lessons. Students have really entered into the spirit of the Jubilee Day.
1.30pm The cake queue forms. The buskers ‘strike up’. All are well mannered and seem to be enjoying the day. Re-
view the students survey, run through more students’ presentations for Friday.
4.00pm We appoint a Head of Music.
Year 7 parents’ consultation begins. Talk with parents and students.
9.00pm Think about tomorrow. The past five years have gone by quicker than a minute and I plan my address to Year
11 for tomorrow. I’ll share the Order of Service in this newsletter.
After such a busy but fulfilling term I suddenly realise with have a holiday coming up. Must make tomorrow the
best it can be.
Friday, 1st June 2012
A photo of the whole Year 11 group, lunch together and shirt signing, distribution of leavers hoodies then the Leaver’s
Eucharist at St Barnabas. Revd. Peter and Captain Rick Tett will make this special. Our students will share their music
and I shall present their leaver’s pens. They will ‘go forth into the world in peace’. I’m proud of the people they have
become and grateful that they will remain Bishop’s students always.

The Final Blessing
Performance by Granny’s Attic
We would like to thank Revd. P Haddleton, Captain R Tett, Mrs M Tuffley and Mrs B Pomeroy
for their contribution to this special service.
One Another's Light
It’s hard to know what brought us here
Away from here we’ve hardly ever been and now
Are never likely to go again.
Faces are lost, and places passed
At which we could have stopped,
And stopping, been glad enough.
Some faces left a mark,
And we on them might have wrought
Some kind of charm or spell
To make their futures work,
But it's hard to guess
How one person on another
Works an influence.
We pass, and lit briefly by one another's light
Think the way we go is right.

Take Time
Take time to work. It is the price of success.
Take time to play. It is the secret of perpetual youth.
Take time to read. It is the foundation of wisdom.
Take time to think. It is the source of power.
Take time to laugh. It is the music of the soul.
Take time to be friendly. It is the road to happiness.
Take time to share. It is the path to true wealth.
Take time to love and be loved. It is the privilege of the gods.

Worship Team News
Another half term gone and many more things accomplished. We are pleased to have held one more profoundly affective Eucharist,
which was led by Bishop John. We are proud to have worked alongside such an inspiring figure. We hope to collaborate further with
him in future. Also, we are proud to announce the inauguration of 7 of our members into the leadership team for next year. We are
sure that this will create greater bonds between the two groups. We are also heavily involved in the growth of the worship team and
have started to implement community acts of worship, in the hope of establishing better links between the college community and how
the acts of worship are run. Many members of the team help create these instrumental acts of worship. We hope you enjoy these
services.

Act of Collective Worship News
On the 17th May the whole College Act of Collective Worship was led by the new Student Leadership Team.
Script for the Act of Collective Worship
Jonathan Tayler—Reading
14 “ I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me— 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I
lay down my life for the sheep”.
Short Talk on Theme
Jack Downing: Today’s reading is about caring for others. At Bishop Perowne we have a vision to create a caring Christian communi-
ty. Caring for others is something that happens all the time in our College, and goes relatively unnoticed. Tom Hutt (Head Boy) and
Emily May (Head Girl) and the rest of this year’s Leadership Team have made it their priority to care for you to the best of their ability,
Jade Meakin: We’d like to thank them for their work at Bishop Perowne. The care that has been shown by them is something that we,
as next year’s Leadership Team, would like to carry on. We hope we can be as encouraging and successful as this year’s Leadership
Team and we wish them luck for the future. But I think that all of us can learn something from today’s reading.
Hallan Wood: To show just a tiny bit of care for those who need it, is not such a hard thing to do—it could be helping a friend or a new
member of your class, or giving to charity. We as a College need to show the greatest of care as Year 11 enter their examination
period. This is something that is possible for all of us, and something that is truly achievable.
Prayers
Charlotte Jones: We ask you to bow your heads in Prayer:
Lord, we pray for our College life, help us to be a more supportive community and spur one another on to be the best we can be.
Joe Ingles: We pray that you will help us to forgive those who have wronged us in the past, to turn over a new leaf and start afresh.
Emma Moore: Lord, we ask that you will help us to love the un-loved and be kind and helpful, even when it is not easy.
Cameron Brett: Thank you for all of our friends and family, we pray that you will help us to care and love them, in the same way that
you love us. Amen.
Nathaniel Fuller : Not long ago we had representatives from our partner school in Tanzania, the Rondo Seminary and Ms Farr pre-
sented us with a handshake which we will show you today.
Shaun Duffy: The hand shake is a symbol of love, care and connection between our two schools.
(Hand shake takes place)

Giving of oneself to others,
is so important in our life.
It really takes little effort,
and relieves us of our plight. Continued over

Act of Collective Worship News continued ………….
When you thoughts are of the,
You forget what’ bothering you.
It seems more logical,
That it’s better thing to do.
It helps to build our character,
And strengthen our soul.
So that we all can be sure,
To reach our own goal.
The pleasure we receive from this,
Is truly great indeed.
It helps to keep pur spirit strong,
And away from all greed.

College Community News: Busking at Bishop Perowne
I am really excited to announce that Bishop Perowne musicians have been given the opportunity to busk in
the Crown Gate Shopping Centre, Worcester. The initial idea to demonstrate the talent at Bishop Perowne
started with a conversation between Deputy Head Boy, Oliver Roberts and the Archdeacon, The Venerable
Roger Morris during a lunch time engagement last September. Olive stated that it would be ‘great to per-
form for the general public and show some community spirit’. Roger Morris was inspired by Oliver’s ideas
and made contact with the Centre Administrator at Crown Gate.
At the end of March, Oliver, Roger, Fiona Morris and I met with two representatives from the Crown Gate
and at the end of a productive meeting, we arranged for two initial Busking session to take place.
On the mornings of the 21st and 30th June between 9.00am and 12.00 noon, members of the Bishop
Perowne Church of England College will be performing on the step area outside the Countess of
Huntingdon Hall. This is a wonderful opportunity for our excellent performers to showcase their talents,
entertain shoppers and allow the general public to sample the ‘Bishop Perowne’ culture and climate.
It would be wonderful to see as many people as possible supporting our College and enjoying the music.
Mr S Bethel—Community Leader for Duckworth and Music Teacher

Gifted and Talented News
It has been another successful half term for our Gifted and Talented students. Looking ahead to next half term there are a number of
additional opportunities for our Gifted and Talented students to look forward to:
Year 8 – Selected students will be invited to attend a Mandarin taster day. During the day students will learn Chinese numbers, how to
talk about their family in Chinese, solve traditional Chinese riddles, learn about Chinese culture as well as having an authentic Chi-
nese lunch including chop stick lessons. On top of this it is hoped students will learn the to “lion dance”.
Year 9 – Selected students will be invited to attend a Gifted and Talented enrichment day at Worcester College of Technology where
they have the opportunity to explore a range of new subjects, for example Law.
Year 10 – A large number of our Gifted and Talented students will attend Master classes at Worcester Sixth Form. Again our students
can select the areas that are of most interest to them, including some subjects which will be totally new to them like Philosophy, Eco-
nomics and Critical Thinking.
Through these exciting and varied experiences our students will gain a huge amount.

Year 8 MFL Course
Year 8 have just begun their National Vocational Qualification -Languages at Work. This is
a nationally recognised qualification assessed by a portfolio of work gathered throughout
the summer term of year 8 and year 9. The skills covered are work based; creating,
presenting, launching and marketing a product in the European marketplace, emailing,
telephoning and greeting visitors to your workplace, dealing with orders and complaints,
organising a conference and applying for jobs.
Food Technology Department News Year 9 Food Technology Visit to Worcester College of Technology
On Thursday 23rd May five Year 9 students were given a guided your around the Spires Restaurant at Worcester College of Technology. The students then had a 3 course meal. At each course the students were taught a new culinary skill that they then practised.
A catering student sat on the same table with the year 9 students and they explained what catering and hospitality courses were on offer.
It was great fun and the food was fantastic.
Community Parliament The Parliament Leadership Team has worked hard to select a new team that will take over from
them next year. They have fairly and professionally chosen the students to best fill the roles.
The new team will work with Year 11 this term to support them in taking over successfully and or-
ganizing a community event. They will also be updating the community notice boards and taking
part in eco-schools training. We meet as a team on Friday mornings during tutor time to discuss
and plan events.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank the current team for their fantastic work this year and
their dedication to organizing events and activities. They have been enthusiastic and creative!
Spires Restaurant Review
On the 24th May five students from Bishop Perowne visited the Spires Restaurant at Worcester College of Technology. We had a three course meal which consisted of:
Plaice goujons and a mixed salad to start, one of the students at the College showed us how to make a vinegeratte dressing. One of the Bishop Perowne students then volunteered to make the dressing for the table.
Chicken Chassuer, creamed potatoes and glazed carrots for the main course. The head chef showed us how to cut a whole raw chicken into eight pieces safely.
For dessert we had a French apple flan with raspberry and mango couli and whipped cream. The Bishop Perowne students individually plated up their desserts and did a pattern with the couli, using cocktail sticks.
The menu was a great success, we all thought that the dessert was the best because it got us all involved, it tasted great and looked appealing.

ARTS’ COLLEGE NEWS
Year 10 students make masks with Vamos Theatre.
Vamos Theatre Company held a mask making workshop on the 24th May in the Art Department for
teachers around the county as well as other arts organisations. For letting the theatre company hold
the workshop here, we were able to persuade the artistic director Rachael Savage to allow us to have
4 Art students also attend the workshop.
Joe Ingles said of the day, ‘ I learnt so much about how Vamos make their masks and really enjoyed
making my own and working on the expression on it’.

PSHCCE News
To begin with we would like to say a huge thank you and well done to Year 8 who have raised
£1030 for St Richard’s Hospice through the Flourishing Fivers project this year. The students
have outdone themselves and beaten last year’s total by over £200. Students took part in
organising a non-uniform day for the College, bake sales and sponsored silences and bounces
to raise the money. A big thank you to the following students for their efforts:
8Y1 have recently completed a project working with Worcester Community Housing to identify issues affecting the local area – students surveyed the College community and made their own observations on the local areas outside of the College. They reported back to the organisation the issues that raise concerns for young people. These ranged from litter to vandalism to antiso-cial behaviour and areas with poor street lighting, students concerns were noted by the organisa-tion who enjoyed the opportunity to hear the views of young people living in Worcester. During the Summer Term we will also be welcoming The Cedar Tree organisation into school to work with Year Seven on issues related to healthy relationships, self esteem and peer pressure.

Sports Department News—Participation to reach potential Year 1 Multi-Skills Festival
Children from St Barnabas St Georges Church of England Primary School, Claines Primary
School and Northwick Manor Primary School all gathered on a wet and dismal day for the Year 1
Multi Skills Festival. A quick change of plan enabled us to use the Sports Hall. The Year 8
Leaders arrived early to set up the stations and run through their events. Altogether we had 120
children taking part in activities to improve their basics skills of agility, balance and co ordination.
The event was run by 25 of our Year 8 students who did a fantastic job of motivating and
encouraging the children. They worked with the little ones on running, jumping, balance, ball
skills and an obstacle course. By the end of the event they were worn out having had a great
time learning new skills in a fun way.
It was Year 8’s first leadership event and after the first activity they gained in confidence and
continued to do so through out the morning. All were keen to volunteer to lead again in the
future. Well done to:

Sports Department News continued ………. Olympics 2012 Chris Day, an Olympic Torch bearer came into school the morning after carrying the flame through Droitwich on the 24th May. Chris is a former student of the school and brought the torch to show the students. He said ‘being selected as a torch bearer is incredible and carrying the torch was an amazing experience’. Chris visited classes of students who got to hold and have photos with the torch. He also went down the sports field and met the local primary schools, who had come for a Sports Festival and had photos together with torch. Chris finished off with a trip to the Clent Block and met with Mr Jeeves and Mr Shepherd who had taught Chris in Years 10 and 11. Sports Department News continued …….. Sophie Tothill’s Marathon success In order to get to London, Sophie first of all had to enter the qualifier, which was held at Stourport on the 3rd March . Sophie managed to win this race and was the top qualifier in her age group for the West Midlands. The mini marathon is a prelude to the main London Marathon event, and is held over the last 3 miles of the marathon course. Sophie was entered in the girls under 13 event, where there were a total of 314 competitors. She completed the course in 18 minutes 50 seconds managing a creditable 19th place. Reception Fitness Fun Festival May 25th 2012
Claines Northwick St Barnabas and St Georges all brought up a class of reception children to
take part in a fitness activity festival. Activities included hoola hoops, good catch, bulls eye all
designed to improve co-ordination. Jumping Joey, an obstacle course and Crocodile River to
improve agility, cone tag and circus skills for balance with some activities to improve throwing. It
was a lovely day and with the heat the little ones tired easily but all worked as hard as they
could. They were buzzing with the excitements of seeing the Olympic torch the day before with
the leaders improvising the station and adding a mini Olympic theme.
At the end of the event we had an unexpected visit from Chris Day who had been an Olympic
torch bearer in Droitwich. It was amazing to see the little ones hold the torch and they all had
there photo taken. This is an experience which they will always remember.
The leaders from year 10 were great role models and learnt a lot about working with children
who were only 4 and 5 years old. Well done to
