Where has the time gone? It is hard to believe we are wrapping up the school year for 2016-17. I have been very impressed with the student body and their ability to get along well with each other. The focus of the teaching staff to work hard with students to help them reach their learning potential. The passion, commitment and time by both teachers and students to excel in extra-curricular activities has been exciting to watch. We have so much to be thankful for at Walter Murray!
We say farewell to some departing staff who are moving on to another school or retiring. Superannuating is Pauline Eng (Administrative Assistant Program) and Brenda Brossart (Guidance Counsellor). Moving to another collegiate is Trevor Mirtle and Lindsay Gunderson. We welcome Jud Heilman (Phys Ed.), Abby Ginther (French Immersion) and Megan Burke (Math) to our teaching staff.
With June upon us, I urge all students to put their best foot forward in completing all course requirements, and put in the time and effort to be prepared for their final assessments. Grade 12s begin their finals on Tuesday, June 20. Grade 9, 10, and 11s begin their finals on Wednesday, June 21. Our graduation ceremony is on Wednesday, June 28 at TCU Place. Report cards will be distributed to students on Friday, June 30 beginning at 1 p.m.
Thanks to the Walter Murray community for making it a rewarding 2016-17 school year. Happy summer!
Tom Sargeant

DRESS CODE REMINDER
How we dress and behave sends messages about us to others. At Walter Murray, we want people to have enough freedom to express their own personality and at the same time recognize that we want to send positive messages to others in our school and surrounding community. As we transition to warmer weather, students need to select their clothes in good taste and judgment in mind. Students should dress modestly in attire. Shirts that reveal or expose mid drift and/or short shorts, are not acceptable school attire. Students in violation of our school dress code will be politely spoken to and may be asked to change their clothing. Speak to an administrator if you have any questions.
Congratulations to the Marauders who competed at the 2017 Skills Canada Saskatchewan Competitions on April 7. Many of you had the opportunity to bus down to CNH and observe the competitions. Our competitors worked very hard and we are proud of your efforts: Eric H. and Branden W. in Robotics, Omarfaraz A. and Caelen K. in Outdoor Power & Recreation Equipment, Dawson B. in Precision Machining, Ashraf G. in Auto Mechanics, Anthony W. in Photography, and Becky M. in Website Development.
Special recognition goes to Becky M. who received a Gold Medal in Website Design. Becky
will now begin preparations to compete at the National Skills Canada Competitions in Winnipeg from May 31 to June 3.

WIMCI was the official mascot of Walter Murray Collegiate in 1961. He was a cardboard creation by Alan Stinson, a former Senior Ring and was an avid spectator at school activities. He had interchangeable paws holding either a basketball or a football. He usually resided in the activities office in Room 202. In the summer of 1975 Mrs. Elaine Sommerfeld, a Walter Murray parent, created a costume so that WIMCI could become even more mobile. Haggis made his first official appearance at MIT in 1995 as our school mascot. Haggis is “Feline” good. What a Scotsman! Name: Haggis Height: 6’2” Weight: 175 lbs Hair: fuzzy and grey

CANOE CLUB
Walter Murray’s Canoe Club is in full swing this spring with the completion of our swim test in April at Harry Bailey Pool and our weekly Monday meetings after school. Once the ice came off the lake at Blair Nelson Park in Stonebridge, we headed onto the water to practice our skills and technique. With 60 dedicated students in the club, we also practiced at River Landing for four weeks. This will help prepare us for our awesome three day trip on the North Saskatchewan River June 8th, 9th and 10th. We’re looking forward to spending time together and for continued sunshine for our trip!
CURLING NEWS
Congratulations to all 19 curlers this year. Your enthusiasm, leadership, and love of the game did not go unnoticed. Thanks to the families who were at each game to cheer the curlers on. Good luck in the future to our graduating curlers: Katie, Ali, Gavi, Aneleise, Farwa, Maryam, and Raj!

Marauder Sports Clubs BADMINTON
Overall we had a great badminton season this year. The senior badminton team finished 4th in the city championships. All of our players did very well. Jack P. captured the Gold medal in Boys' singles. This advanced Jack to the Regionals where he won gold again. After a long day of matches at Provincials in Weyburn, Jack came away as the silver medallist.
FOOTBALL
Our spring camp for football is just about here. Any student interested in playing football can come out. We are handing out equipment on Thursday, June 1st and Friday, June 2nd at lunch or after school. There will be two spring mini camps this year—the first starting Monday, June 5th and Tuesday, June 6th from 3:50 to 5:15 p.m. The second mini camp will take place the following Monday, June 12th and Tuesday June 13th. After the camp there will be a clothing order happening for the fall. All clothing can be ordered online and I will post the website when it is up and running.
Our fall camp will start on August 28th and this is for both junior and senior football players. We will be
running two practices a day for three days. Practice one will be with just helmets and will take place from 7:45 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. on the football field. The next practice will start at 3:30 p.m. in full equipment. We will follow this same schedule for Tuesday and Wednesday. Thursday we will be back to one practice in the afternoon with a scrimmage on Friday. After the September long weekend, we will be back on Tuesday mornings with a helmets practice from 7:15 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. and another practice after school with full equipment. Same thing will happen on Wednesday as we play our first regular season game on Thursday, September 7th.
As your coach I am excited for another football season to begin! Go Marauders!

TRACK AND FIELD
Congratulations to the athletes of the 2017 Track and Field team who placed 3rd out of 16 teams at this year’s city meet. Thanks to over 90 athletes who participated and supported each other throughout the entire season. We are extremely proud of our team members who were willing to try new events and fill the spots to help us succeed in this outstanding placement. The overwhelming presence of the Marauder cheer at the final minutes of the city meet was truly inspirational. As we say goodbye to the senior members of the team who are moving on to their next adventures, we look forward to next year and what the future holds for this team.

Japan Exchange Program 2017
This Easter, the Japan Exchange Program 2017 successfully completed their visit to Hitachi and Takaoka in Japan.
The 20 students selected from the city and supervising teachers were required to take a short Japanese language and culture course on the weekends. On the trip, they had a chance to practice their skills and expand their knowledge through this unforgettable experience.
Japan Exchange 2018
The group will visit Takaoka and Kitahiroshima, Japan around Easter 2018 for two weeks. The students will also have a cultural tour around the Tokyo and Kyoto area. The estimated cost for the exchange is approximately $3,900 if there are 20 students. This includes transportation, cancellation, and out-of-country medical and accident insurance, chaperone share, and teacher substitute cost. Not included in this fee are personal expenses such as spending money, passports, etc.
The application form and information package will be ready to pick up from the contact teacher in each collegiate starting
the second week of September.

On the morning of Wednesday, May 3, Walter Murray held its annual Multi-Cultural Festival. Students displayed information, artifacts and food from their home countries. There was also entertainment which included instrumentals, singing, and dancing. The Walter Murray family really appreciates the time and effort put into the displays by the students and the support from their families as they put this together. We would also like to thank the staff, administration, caretaking, and the front office for their willingness to help and make this a success.

GSA Parade
10
Recently, Walter Murray’s Gender and Sexuality Alliance (GSA) presented Mr. Sargeant with a rainbow flag to grace our entryway. As a school that embraces diversity, Walter Murray welcomes students from all over the globe as well as all over the gender and sexuality spectrum. All will feel immediately welcomed upon entering our wonderful school. Also, this year for the first time the Saskatoon Public School Division is going to have a formal presence in the Pride Parade. Scheduled for Saturday, June 24th, the Pride Parade has in the past featured participants from various collegiates’ GSAs, but now the division as a whole will be proudly represented. Walter Murray will contribute a robust contingent of staff and students, and parents are more than welcome to walk with us. The Parade begins at 1:00 p.m., but we will muster earlier to have our potentially large group in place. If you are interested in participating or contributing in any way, please feel free to contact either of the GSA advisors, Travis Myrol ([email protected]) or Patti Rowley ([email protected]).
Congratulations Ms. Rowley for
being nominated for the YWCA Women of
Distinction Award. We’re so proud!

Math Contest Provincial Team Standings
Extreme Math Challenge
(Grades 7 to 10)
First Grade 10 team—Kyle L., Zia S., Aric L., Vanessa C., and Jackson Y.
Come join the WM teams as we compete next year in the annual Extreme Math Chal-lenge which is usually held on a Saturday in early to mid March. The challenge has a team problem-solving focus as teams participate in an active relay round and a team problem solving round in addition to an initial individual round.
The performances of students on math contests since February at Walter Murray continues to be a source of inspiration and excitement. A summary of the overall results are provided below in terms of medal winners and team winners (generally top 3 or 5 students) as well as provincial and national standings for our school teams. Walter Murray Marauders have had another great year!

Based on his high performance on the Fermat, Yunfei W. has been invited to participate in a prestigious workshop at the University of Waterloo for a week in July. He also won $200 for being the Fermat pro-vincial champion. In addition, Yanchi X. has earned an opportunity to participate in the annual Lloyd Auckland Workshop in Waterloo for a week in June because of his strong performance on the Fermat. Way to go Yunfei and Yanchi! We look forward to you bringing your learning back to the Walter Mur-ray community.

We were very fortunate to have Coralee- Pringle-Nelson, a registered psychologist with her Masters in Education, speak to around 80 people at our School Community Council meeting on Tuesday, May 23. Coralee gave a presentation on understanding and handling anxiety in teens. With final assessments quickly approaching, we thought it would be helpful to highlight some topics discussed regarding emotional wellness: Laughter promotes a state of rest Small smile and calmness while sitting beside an adolescent with
focused listening is calming while reassuring that things are safe Self hug/deep breathing Strong back technique, crossing arms Distractions to help overcome anxiety: Music, chewing gum, wall pushups, squats, humour Tears produce a relaxed state up to 2 hours Scents like lavender, basil, peppermint, and cinnamon help mental/
emotional stability Grounding (removing shoes) can help a soul calm with nature Art, music, and dance can help restore your mind
