Greetings my friends in the Name of the Lord!
As our one-year anniversary draws near I must say my time with you all has been
wonderful. Living in the Shenandoah Valley reminds me of my home in Oregon, for I
am from the Willamette Valley. The Lord has blessed our time together as we have
shown a pretty good increase in attendance, considering our size, and the congrega-
tion has experienced healing. It was also a great blessing for me to work in the Toms
Brook Fair Booth this past year as I joined a 40-year ministry of hot dogs and bean
soup distributed at the Shenandoah County Fair. The parsonage I moved into last Ju-
ly was well prepared and maintained and is a joy to live in. The people of the commu-
nity have also accepted me well, so I must say my first year as your pastor has been
more than I imagined.
As we turn our attention to the community and learn how to pray for and share our
faith with people, I expect the Lord will be bringing many of them to Toms Brook to
worship with us. Our Toms Brook Family Fun Celebration of June 4th is just one ex-
ample of our turning outward to see and minister to the families of our community.
When a church truly follows Jesus, then the Lord adds to their number those who
are being saved. We are in for some exciting times, and I look forward to walking
with you all as we experience God’s blessing together. Let us pray, “Our Father in
heaven, hallowed be Thy Name. Thank You for Your great kindness in bringing us to-
gether. Please continue to bless and may our second year be better than the first.
In Jesus’ Name, amen.”
The peace of God be with you,
Pastor Stan

It’s time to explore your homes, garages, and the stores to help our VBS
”Lifeguards” collect the necessary supplies for our fantastic Surf Shack Vacation
Bible School. The majority of these items will be used for transforming the
church into an epic beach party for our surfers of all ages. Drop-off boxes will be
located in the church library and fellowship hall stage to store the items listed
below. Look for the palm tree in the sanctuary to come in the near future with
surfboard tags of items needed. The Dollar Tree, Target’s Dollar Spot (at the
front of the store), and other thrifty places are great locations to find beach/summer/luau themed goodies.
Please label any items you would like returned with your name before placing in the VBS collections box so
they can be returned accordingly.

Real Experiences Affecting Change-REACH
June 18 - 24
Ed Smallwood and Steve Kern will be taking several Sr. High youth to Roanoke to participate
in missions through REACH Ministries again this year. REACH provides opportunities for
groups and individuals to be in Christian service to the Roanoke community, so that they rec-
ognize their assets and discover the joy of using them for others. In previous years our youth
have served at the Salvation Army, homeless shelters, food pantries, and a summer program
for at risk children, in addition making home repairs for those in need. The program’s service
is based on the following values: Dignity – The belief that all people have value and are wor-
thy of respect. Responsibility – Belief that all people have a responsibility to use their assets
for each other. Service – The belief that we experience joy when engaging in selfless acts.
Enrich Program
Tuesday Mornings, July 11 – August 19
The Enrich Program, held at Mt. Olive UMC, was established in 2009 to provide proper nutri-
tion, academic mentorship, and positive social interaction for children at risk of not receiving
these important developmental tools during their summers. The children served through this
program will have a greater chance of becoming positive citizens of our community. Their aca-
demics will improve through the summer reinforcement of state curriculum, enabling them to
have a more successful school-year experience and increase their self-esteem. Along with the
love of Christ, healthy habits will be modeled, learned, and experienced, creating a healthier
population. Knowledge that their children will be well cared for will relieve stress for families.
Six volunteers from our church (3 to prepare meals, and 3 to mentor) are needed
each Tuesday between 8:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Watch for a sign-up sheet outside the
sanctuary. Please prayerfully consider this opportunity to serve and call Ellen Kern at 540-
335-9247 with any questions.
