NEWSLETTER #8 JUNE 2016 ENVER CREEK SECONDARY SCHOOL 14505 - 84 Avenue, Surrey, B.C. V3S 8X2 • Tel: (604)543-8149 • Fax: (604) 543-9762 School Website: www.surreyschools.ca/schools/envercreek PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE As the calendar turns to June, we pause for a moment to reflect on what has been an outstanding school year at Enver Creek. There have been so many moments to be proud of during the month of May alone. The past month has included the hugely successful Enver Creek Speech Meet, highlighting the talents of a true cross section of our students. The Drama department put on a great musical performance of “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee”. We have welcomed our incoming grade 7 students for a tour and orientation of Enver Creek. Mr. Reid and the Athletic Council students put on a special night of recognition for our Cougar student athletes. Many Enver Creek grade 12 students took on the challenge and wrote their AP challenge exams. These results will come in to the College Board in July and I know they will make us all proud while setting themselves up well for the future. On Friday, May 27th, the Grade 12 Dinner/Dance was held at the Pan Pacific Hotel. This was a night where our students, parents and staff came together to celebrate an important milestone. The students looked tremendous and truly made us proud. The Enver Creek Dry Grad committee demonstrated what makes our community so special. The organizing committee has been meeting all year and they worked with the volunteers on Friday to ensure that our grads were provided with a safe and FUN option. The students were welcomed back from the dinner/dance by tiki torches, hula dancers and a tropical environment to set the stage for a great night. Thank you so much to all the family and friends who volunteered for this important event. Looking forward into June, there is still work and learning to be done. Students and staff will be preparing for final summative assessments of student learning. Staff will be preparing to communicate to students and parents where students are at in their learning at the end of this school year. The final day of regular classes will be Friday, June 17, with students having the opportunity on June 20 and 21 to come in for Course Competency days to demonstrate their learning. Provincial Exams run until Monday, June 27. Please check the schedule carefully. Enver Creek’s Commencement Ceremony was held on Thursday, June 2 at the Chandos Pattison Auditorium. Staff, family, and friends came together to celebrate the completion of 13 years of education for our grade 12 students. This was a special night for all the members of our school community! Please note the new bell schedule for the 2016-2017 school year. Due to the extra instructional days next year, instead of shortening every day we have gone to a shortened Wednesday to provide some flexible learning time. Finally, report cards will be distributed in TAG classes at 12:00 pm on Thursday, June 23. The BC Ministry of Education has just released information for the new grad planner that aligns with the new curriculum. More information will be ready for the August newsletter but families can go to the ministry website now for current information. Newsletter Submission: for June 2016

Grades 10-12 Graduation Transitions (GT) Update

Important information has been given in previous newsletters regarding: • Component requirements • GT Progress Reporting and Collection Dates

If you have not yet read the above Newsletters, they are still available on our website and contain program details to help you understand the GT program. Further details can also be obtained by clicking on the Graduation Transitions tab on Enver Creek’s website www.envercreek.sd36.bc.ca .

Grade 10 and 11 Students

Personal Health Component Requirement DUE!: Students were required to submit a completed (including a parent/guardian signature) “150 Minutes Per Week of Physical Activity” form to the Career Centre by last month’s due date (May 24-27). Updated GT Progress Reports will be posted in TAG following this date to confirm each student’s GT status.” Need a form? See “Publications” > “Grad Transitions” > Personal Health Component” for the applicable form. GT Presentations Volunteers: GT Coordinators would like to thank GT Presentations volunteers for their fine effort on May 12th. Your participation helped make this event a success. We hope you enjoyed this experience and that you benefit by what you’ve learned in the process. Grade 12 Students:

GT Presentat ions (May 12th)

…a SUCCESS! This event offered our Grade 12s an opportunity for reflection and celebration. Teachers, community members, and student volunteers thoroughly enjoyed sharing this experience with our Grade 12 students, as well. This event was the final requirement for the GT Program. Students who participated in this event and have met all previous requirements will receive the mandatory 4 credits for graduation - they will receive “RM” (Requirement Met) on their June report card.

Overdue GT Documents? Grade 12 students who have NOT completed/submitted all GT requirements are AT RISK of NOT graduating. These students have been alerted to their status (e.g. April report card and postings in TAG and GT Bulletin Board).

Questions or concerns can be directed to GT Coordinators. (Ms. Ruffo or Ms. Donnelly)

2016 2017 After extensive consultation with staff, students, and parents, we have decided to adjust our bell schedule for next year. There are additional instruction days in the 2016/2017 school year compared to our current year and rather than reduce the length of each school day we have pooled those minutes and we have shortened every Wednesday. The school day will formally end at 2:13 every Wednesday. The rationale is that this additional time between 2:13 and 2:53 on Wednesday will allow students to work with teachers if they need help or have fallen behind. It will also allow for teachers to collaborate together, to ensure we are working towards our goal of helping every student grow to their full potential.

ENVER CREEK GENERAL SCHOOL FEES 2016 - 2017 Instruction is provided free of charge to all students registered in a school’s education program sufficient to meet the general requirements of graduation, and it shall provide free of charge any resource materials necessary to participate in that program. The School Act permits the charging of fees for certain items. In Surrey secondary schools, the following structure applies through Board Policy 9802 related to fees and any costs for students or families. Students will need to provide their own basic supplies and equipment for their own personal use such as paper, writing tools, calculators, notebooks, gym attire and sewing kits, and some other items needed for various electives. Workbooks may be provided to students on loan, or they may be purchased for personal use. Students can also elect to purchase other support materials (professional resources including practice examinations) through their teachers. Some courses such as Textiles and Woodwork provide students with the option of using different or better quality materials, which may be brought from home or purchased from the school at cost. Some courses, such as AP (Advanced Placement), offer optional certifications or external examinations for which there are charges. If you wish to discuss the implications that these charges may have on your son or daughter, please contact our school administration. REPLACEMENT CHARGES Students will be assessed a charge for lost or damaged school property (textbooks, uniforms, library books, etc.) Charges will be based on the replacement cost of the item. Students are expected to return the same textbook they are issued so it is important to label your text with your full name and pupil number, and avoid lending textbooks to other students. SCHOOL SUPPLIES As each student will have a different schedule and different teachers, we do not provide a list of required school supplies. If you wish to purchase some items prior to the start of school, the following are general supplies used for most classes: 3-ring binders (approximately 1 ½”) Ruler Supply of loose-leaf paper Glue Stick Index dividers Pens, pencils, erasers USB flash drive Pencil crayons Please do not purchase a calculator until your child has spoken with his/her Mathematics teachers. Teachers may have specific requirements for each class and will advise students of those items during the first week of school. MATERIALS CONSUMED IN A COURSE In courses that consume materials (e.g. art, cooking, woodworking, metalwork, science) schools can only charge for materials or goods that are surplus to what would be necessary for the student to meet the expected outcomes in a course. If a student is going beyond the basic requirements of a course and creating projects for personal use (e.g. creating a table of mahogany rather than plywood), then the student may bring their own materials from home or the cost for the materials for these enhanced projects may be recovered through a fee. FIELD TRIPS Students may be charged a cost for expenses such as transportation, accommodation, meals, entrance fees and equipment rentals for optional field trips, or other extracurricular outings or events. Students will not be charged for any field studies/field trips where attendance is mandatory as part of a course or program.

Path to Graduation - NEW What This Means for Students

The changes to the provincial exam program are effective July 1, 2016, which is the

legislated start to the school year.

Students entering Grade 10 in the 2017/18 school year will be the first group where

the new requirements apply entirely. Changes in curriculum, assessments and

graduation requirements are being phased-in over the next few years.

The number of credits required to graduate remains the same.

New curriculum and provincial exams are the key differences between the previous

(2004) Graduation Program and the new 2017 Graduation Program.

Curriculum being implemented with the 2017 Graduation Program has been

redesigned. The new curriculum will help teachers create learning environments that

are both engaging and personalized for students.

At the heart of B.C.’s redesigned curriculum are core competencies, essential

learning and literacy and math skills foundations. Along with this, the current

secondary school provincial exams are being discontinued, to be replaced with two

new exams, which focus on literacy and math skills.

There is overlap between the previous graduation program and the new one. There

will also be a transition period to account for current students who are progressing

under a number of different scenarios. The amount of overlap will depend on how

many current courses and exams a student has completed and written before June

2017.

Some students on the 2004 grad years program may not have to write certain

provincial exams. Courses from the 2004 program will fully count towards the 2017

program.

Page 13: June News 2016 - Surrey Schools · BRONZE COUGAR SILVER COUGAR PLATINUM COUGAR Ben B. Pavan L. Sandeep B. Ella F. Bryson C. Rohan L. Aanchal B. Guneet D. Andrew M. Sofia F.

For the 2016/2017 School Year:

• Grade 10 students will:

• Follow most of the current Graduation Program requirements

• Take a Math 10, a Language Arts 10 and Science 10, with classroom assessments

instead of provincial exams

• Meet Social Studies requirements with classroom assessments instead of provincial

exam

• Write a math skills exam and a literacy exam before graduation

• Grade 11 students will:

• Finish all the current Graduation Program requirements

• Have completed a Math 10, a Language Arts 10 and Science 10 or equivalent and

written the provincial exams

• Meet Social Studies requirements with classroom assessments instead of provincial

exam

• Write a literacy exam before graduation

• Not write the new math skills exam

• Grade 12 students will:

• Finish all the current Graduation Program requirements

• Have completed a Math 10, a Language Arts 10, Science 10 and Social Studies 11

(or equivalent) and have written provincial exams

• Take Language Arts 12 (or equivalent) and write the associated provincial exam

• Not write the new literacy or math skills exams

• Students who have completed courses associated with discontinued exams by June

30, 2016 will have until June 2017 to write or re-write exams

• Students taking summer school during July and August 2016 will not be required to

write provincial exams in Math 10, Language Arts 10, Science 10 and Social Studies

11 (or equivalent)

Page 14: June News 2016 - Surrey Schools · BRONZE COUGAR SILVER COUGAR PLATINUM COUGAR Ben B. Pavan L. Sandeep B. Ella F. Bryson C. Rohan L. Aanchal B. Guneet D. Andrew M. Sofia F.

Graduation Requirements for 2017/2018 To graduate, students will require 80 credits total, with a minimum of 16 at the grade

12 level, and 28 elective course credits. 52 credits are required from the following:

• Two Career Education courses (8 credits) (replaces Planning 10 and Graduation Transitions)

• Physical Health and Education 10 (4 credits)

• Science 10 (4), and a Science 11 or 12 (4 credits)

• Social Studies 10 (4 credits), and a Social Studies 11 or 12 (4 credits)

• A Math 10 (4), and a Math 11 or 12 (4 credits)

• A Language Arts 10, 11 and 12 (12 credits)

• An Arts Education 10, 11, or 12 and/or an Applied Design, Skills and Technologies 10, 11, or 12 (4 credits)

The content and learning outcomes for Grad Transitions and Planning 10 have been

distributed into new required Career Education credits and other required

curriculum.

Provincial Exams and Assessment The new Grade 10-12 curriculum is available for use in the 2016/2017 school year but

is not yet mandatory. Current Grade 10 and 11 provincial exams do not align with

the new curriculum that teachers may be using. However, current Grade 10/11

provincial exams will continue to be available until June 2017 for students who have

completed associated course work by June 30, 2016.

Students do not take the new exams if they took the "old" course (or completed the

courses before the 2016/17 school year).

The expectation is that students complete EITHER a Math 10 provincial exam OR the

new math skills exam, and EITHER a Language Arts 12 provincial exam OR the New

Language Arts-Literacy 12 exam, based on when they took the courses.

Students taking summer school courses in Math 10, Language Arts 10, Science 10,

Social Studies 11 (or their equivalents) in the summer of 2016 will not have to write

provincial exams for those subjects. Students taking any of the Language Arts 12

courses in summer 2016 WILL have to write the associated provincial exams.

Science 10, Social Studies 11, and Language Arts 10 (and their equivalent) provincial

exams will not be replaced with another form of provincial assessment. These courses

will now be assessed in the classroom, as happens for other courses. The Ministry is

working to provide support materials for curriculum and classroom assessment.

Page 15: June News 2016 - Surrey Schools · BRONZE COUGAR SILVER COUGAR PLATINUM COUGAR Ben B. Pavan L. Sandeep B. Ella F. Bryson C. Rohan L. Aanchal B. Guneet D. Andrew M. Sofia F.

Other Specifics:

• Math 10 exams will be replaced with a new math skills exam

• The Language Arts 12 group of exams (EN 12, EFP 12, COM 12) will be replaced with a single Language Arts-Literacy exam tied to the new required Language Arts course

• This is also the case for French Immersion and Programme Francophone

• The new math skills and literacy exams will be available for the 2017/2018 school year

There are many different scenarios for students in terms of course completion and assessments. Here are a few other examples:

• Students who took a Math 10 course before June 30, 2016 must write the associated provincial exam before June 2017

• Students who took a Language Arts 12 course before June 30, 2017 must write the associated provincial exam before June 30, 2018

• Students will have one year to write and/or rewrite the provincial exams after

completing the course work

Students with a personal scenario different than any already addressed, or with questions or concerns, should contact their school, or contact Service BC at the

following telephone numbers: In Victoria: (250) 387-6121, In Vancouver: (604) 660-

2421, elsewhere in BC: 1 (800) 663-7867.

Other Graduation Matters These changes will not impact students’ chances of getting into post-secondary

institutions, as these institutions have been very involved in the conversations around

these changes. We are moving slowly with changes to the graduation program, and will continue to work very closely with post-secondary and other education partners

to assess, adjust and fine-tune over the coming years.

Students will not have to re-submit course selection (at the school level) for next year,

as the draft curriculum is not being fully implemented until the 2017/2018 school year.

Students are encouraged to discuss further with their school counsellor.

Students on the 2004 grad years program can have new curriculum courses count

towards their graduation. Core courses will fulfill primary requirements, and options and electives will fulfill elective requirements.
