WisconsinPRINT EXCELLENCE

Print excellence comes in many shapes and sizes. In an effort to shamelessly promote GLGA’s print excel-lence program, the Association manages the largest regional awards competition in North America each year. And although it is great to be recognized by your peers and win an award, one does not have to compete in the Graphics Excellence Awards competition to achieve print excellence.

Why You Should Always Work Towards Achieving Print Excellence

As mentioned before, there are many ways to achieve print excellence. Print quality is a given. This is what makes a customer excited about receiving their materials – brochures, tags/labels, in-store retail signage, packaging - and using the products our industry manufactures to grow their business. Often, companies in our industry are awfully good at this. However, what steps do you implement behind the scenes to achieve print excellence that helps to grow your own business? Are you always reviewing workflow to ensure that it is as efficient as possible? Do you routinely perform maintenance on your equipment so that it prints, converts and finishes material as well as it should? Are you constantly scrutinizing the production process so you can reduce makeready, spoilage and waste? Do you have regular meetings with staff to share experi-ences, investigate improvements and implement the suggestions that will help your company achieve print excellence?

Tools and Resources

GLGA and Printing Industries of America (PIA) offer a wide range of tools and resources that can assist you and your staff in achieving print excellence. This includes everything from the Continuous Improvement Conference to the iLearning Center (PIA’s online learning management system) to the Color Conference. Contact us today at (855) 522-2210 to learn more about the programs GLGA and PIA offer that will help you in your continuing journey to achieve print excellence.

IllinoisLooking forward is always a good place to look as our industry continues to “disrupt” our clients and the way we position the many platforms of communication. During my management of Gibson Graphics we established a belief in our people with our motto printed on every carton that shipped out: Machinery will come and go, but our people are the essential part of the process.

I have been fortunate enough to see offset disrupt letterpress in my grandfather’s shop and cold type disrupt hot lead in my father’s shop and value added disrupt the norm in my shop, but the one constant was and still remains: PEOPLE. I call to mind the 19th-century proverb, “If you give a man a fish he is hungry again in an hour; if you teach him to catch a fish you do him a good turn.” The proverb remains true to this day; people challenged to learn and take action will be hungry for more, creating processes that are a few steps ahead of their clients’ expectations to provide program solutions and create positive disruption.

During the Graphic Excellence Awards Celebration we found proof in the printed and finished entries on display. There is no doubt our community has taken on the role of challenging our people to “think outside the box:” provide solutions that create excitement which becomes inspiration to purchase what the piece is promoting. THAT inspiration is the essential part of the process provided by people driving the machines. We must analyze what that piece is doing for our client. Diving deep into providing a marketing solution for our client, using proven methods of communication that are brought to the buyers desk by educated people who know the methods, processes and technology to deliver a positive experience.

The Graphic Excellence Awards evening also provided an opportunity to visit with the GLGA Education Foundation scholarship recipients. I was thrilled to sit next to one our recipients, Victor Osuyak, as well as Dr. Dan Wilson, the Coordinator of Graphic Communications at Illinois State University. Their passion for what lies ahead in our industry was electric, and feeling that excitement gave me a sense that we are supporting the students to supply us with great minds who are not afraid to “step outside the box.” Your support for those people is essential to help great minds develop into future leaders for our industry. July 20, 2016, will mark the Fourth Annual Chicagoland Printers Scholarship Golf Outing, which funds the Illinois Graphic Communications Scholarship Program. Please consider helping this effort. For more information, contact Sharon Flick at [email protected] or me at [email protected].

IndianaThis month’s opening quote is from Woody Allen who said in a 1977 interview, “80 percent of success in life is just showing up.” I thought of that at the Graphic Excellence Awards Celebration where dozens of print-ers showed up to celebrate and further success. On a basic level they were celebrating the success of their own craftsmanship exhibited by their entries into the competition. On another level they were celebrating the success of their industry shown off by the many innovative, interesting and superbly produced products on display. I’m sure everyone walked away invigorated and more informed about what they could do to bring more value to what they produce for their customers. But perhaps on the more abstract level they just showed up, knowing that they would get something out of the evening to further their success.

Yes, those in attendance were the winners – not winners of awards (though many were), but winners in the industry because they showed up and got something out of the evening. It may have been something technical, it may have been a contact, it may have been an introduction to a scholarship recipient who will go on to be someone’s key employee, it may have just been inspiration to continue on with the mindset of improvement. Of course we are all inundated with opportunities and a person cannot do everything. But, is there another organization that provides more opportunities that are pinpointed to your business? Check out the GLGA and PIA website and see what is going on. My point is to encourage you to participate in the offerings your Association brings to you. Show up! You might be amazed at what happens.

Achieving Print ExcellencePrint manufacturing is embracing Industry 4.0 with the next level of industrial production driven by digitization, having gone through many changes over the past decades. This is driving productivity while ensuring and verifying the quality of the printed materials. It is facilitating the link between printed products and electronic communications, shown in many industry studies to increase the response rates and engagement with the customer.

The communications industry continues to be at the forefront in industrial growth and innovation. The developments in the industrial age are shown in Figure 1, with the first revolution based on the harnessing of power from steam or water, followed by the advent of mass production using electric energy. This was followed by the use of digital technologies using electronics and IT to further automate the production process.

What we are seeing now with the fourth industrial revolution is the use of cyber–physical systems. These are effectively systems and processes which communicate with each other machine and/or humans, both inside and outside company bound-aries, collaborating to provide a smart production system throughout the whole value chain. This builds on the individual IT capabilities of individual systems, using the Internet of Things (IoT) and the cloud to provide connectivity and integration.

This facilitates big data to be collected, analyzed and acted upon so that systems can utilize simula-tions and models to adapt, reconfigure and carry out steps in the manufacturing process, autono-mously in many cases, to drive quality and produc-tivity, ultimately impacting profitability.

Currently there individual systems within print facilities that are optimized; however, these all operate as individual islands of automation. While efficiencies can be gained in each of the processes, it is only through a fully integrated manufacturing systems approach that fully utilize the IoT, analytics and digital data that the complete manufactur-ing value chain can be configured for optimal performance.

Today’s effective and successful production facilities are obtaining improvement by optimizing their operational metrics. This involves increas-ing throughput and customer satisfaction while reducing inventory and expenses, each of which are defined below.

Industry 4.0 is at the heart of achieving all the goals. The individual metrics need to be tracked using actual data to quantify the impact of all factors on the manufacturing performance and the impact of systematic changes in the production workflow.

To expand on the operational metrics used, they are best described by the following

• Throughput - The rate at which the system generates money through sales. The velocity or speed it takes job go through planning, estimating, materials procurement, produc-tion, packaged and delivered, and payment is received from the customer. Touch points are removed and processes optimized to ensure seamless flow.

• Inventory - The cost of all supplies, raw materi-als, work-in-process, and final product that have consumed money and resources.

• Expense - The day to day costs to operate the company, minus the costs of purchased mate-rials and inventory. Efficiency of manufactur-ing is a cornerstone of this with appropriate planning and removal of bottlenecks.

• Customer Satisfaction – customer expectations for quality product and on-time delivery.

By analyzing the data collected on the operational metrics it is then possible to optimize all of the steps in the production cycle and standardizing on materials very high efficiencies can be achieved.

An example is shown here where there were 134 make-readies and 273,000 impressions were completed in 24 hours on a sheet-fed press. This was achieved at a commercial print facility, ESP Colour Hub, by having a clear focus on their position in the marketplace and the optimizing the press, the consumables and the operating procedures to deliver high quality prints to a wide range of satisfied customers. The result is a typical production within a twenty four hour time period, repeated on a daily basis.

It is essential to ensure that the whole production facility is connected and optimized. The advantages highlighted in the print production from ESP Colour Hub would not have been fully realized were it not possible to process the jobs through pre-press efficiently, provide all materials and plates to the press, and then be able to handle the printed materials in post press and then ship to the customer. Using the data to analyze the complete system allows the appropriate solutions and schedules to drive the improvements through the facility.

Print production is transforming, resulting in the smart factories of tomorrow being the reality of today. Systems are available from manufacturers that leverage Industry 4.0 throughout the whole production cycle that offer significant improvements to the manufacturing process and strength is gained from having the complete approach across all manufacturing areas. This is redefining the marketplace and cost structure. Exploiting these systems for business allows reduced manufacturing costs and cycle times, while increasing productivity and quality assurance, all of which drive profitability.

5 Steps to Make the Most of Your AwardsWill a prospect become a customer because of an award you won?

Maybe not.

But just like a positive customer review can tip the scale in your favor, so can your company accom-plishments. Did you compete in the GLGA Graphic Excellence Awards? Achieve a new important certification? Have you been recognized for work you do in the community? Take these five steps to get the most out of those recognitions.

Write An Article

Local newspapers and business journals value content from area companies. Develop an article that details the award. 150 - 300 words is all you need.

Develop A Case Study

If it’s a business award, transform that article into a case study. Buyers value the informa-tion a case study

provides. An industry award, where your product or process is acknowledged, is worth outlining.

How did you resolve a problem or break new ground for a customer? Did you increase brand awareness, improve a return on investment or reduce costs? Quantify the details.

Repurpose The Information

You penned a great article or case study; so, make sure it’s available in all relevant channels.

• Showcase on your website

• Use it in your newsletter

• Publish on LinkedIn, Facebook and other social media channels

Make It Fun

A meaningful award is something beneficial to share with all employees. Make it a celebration. Feature it in an all hands meeting.

Promoting company accomplishments makes everyone feel stronger about you. Plus, there’s no better message than employees touting your brand.

Generate Leads

We’re all in the business to make money. Increasing overall brand awareness is positive. However, by enabling the lead generation element, you can further leverage and monetize your investment.

By taking these steps you’ll maximize the value of the good work you deliver, increasing the amount of potential buyers and generating new revenue opportunities.

ENVIRONMENTAL

Toxic Release Inventory Form A and Form R Reports Due July 1The Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) was created by EPA in response to several events that raised public concern about local preparedness for chemical emergencies and the availability of information on hazardous substances.

Printing is one of the industry sectors required to annually report releases of certain chemicals. A printing facility with 10 or more full-time equiva-lent employees is required to report if the facility exceeds established chemical thresholds. Note that TRI reporting is not based on the amount of emissions to atmosphere or how much waste is generated. Instead, a company that manufactures or processes more than 25,000 pounds or otherwise uses more than 10,000 pounds of a TRI-listed chemical is required to report releases of these chemicals by July 1.

There are currently more than 650 chemicals covered by the TRI program including chemicals commonly used by printers, such as toluene, xylene,

ethylbenzene, 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene, glycol ethers, solvents, and metals. Of particular interest to lithographic printers is the wide use of glycol ethers in fountain solutions and more recently in cleaning solutions, to take the place of solvents with high vapor pressures. It is important to mention that “glycol ethers” is a chemical category and within this category there are hundreds of individual chemicals that are reportable. Safety Data Sheets (SDS) do not indicate the presence of “glycol ethers” as a constituent of a raw material; so, a printer must look up each listed constituent and compare it to the list of TRI chemicals to determine whether is it reportable.

For more information, go to https://www.epa.gov/toxics-release-inventory-tri-program or contact Ann O’Brien at [email protected] or Cheryl Moran at [email protected] at SCS Engineers in Madison, WI.
