EVERY SHABBAT - SOMETHING SPECIALRabbi Eliot Isaac Malomet
We have had a busy spring. The RutgersShabbat, the CAE Legacy Shabbat, the Youth Shabbat, all the special
milestones, auf rufs, bar mitzvahs, events, speakers, Shabbat dinners, and so much more. They were memorable experiences, all of them! With lots of buzz and festivity. And of course, food!
Thank God, we have such a busy shul withso many amazing people working behind thescenes to make sure that every Shabbat is terrific. Here’s a shout out to our staff, who make it allhappen: Linda! Diane! Beth! We are so lucky tohave you! And our support staff: Hector! Silva!Nely! You are amazing! For every minute ofShabbat activity, there is at least one hour ofbehind the scenes work.
Friends, Shabbat in shul is where it’s at.Shabbat morning is where and when shul lifetakes place. Even when there is “nothing” goingon in shul, there is always “something.” I knowthat when someone misses a Shabbat, the firstquestion I get “so, what did I miss in shul thisweek?”
When our different panels convened onthe CAE Legacy Shabbat, people went awayfeeling excited. They really got something out ofthe different stories that were told, stories ofordinary congregants who have extraordinarybiographies. They wanted more time. Theywanted to attend all the sessions. And, they hada great Kiddush to boot! “Rabbi, let’s do thismore often,” they said.
People enjoyed the Youth Shabbat as well. When we took a break to study in depth after the
preliminary Shacharit service, people reacted andsaid, “let’s do that again. Maybe we could haveparallel study sessions, on different topics withdifferent teachers, and we don’t need the babka.”(Not that there’s anything wrong with babka!)There are lots of ways to change up the formatand create a great experience. Let’s do it! Iwelcome your ideas.
Every Shabbat is special. It’s a truism, Iknow, but as we begin to reflect on how tostructure next year, why don’t we put the truth ofour shul front and center? Here is my suggested“tag-line” for next year (and please note thechiasmus*): “Every Shabbat – something special;something special – every Shabbat.” I think itworks.
Every Shabbat there is something special atthe HPCT-CAE, and when you miss a Shabbat, you miss another episode in the running drama ofcommunity life. Even when there is nothing“going on” on a particular Shabbat, you neverknow what’s going to happen. There are aninfinite number of stories in our beautiful shul, and each week, at least one of them plays out.
I’ll be at Camp Ramah in the Berkshiresagain this summer, teaching and studying andthinking up ways to make Shabbat even morespecial in Highland Park. Have a wonderfulsummer! Rest, relax, rejuvenate, and mostimportantly, come to shul!

In my final “Message from the President” Iwould like to offer some reflections and thanks.Serving as President of this congregation has beena true privilege. I will soon “pass on the gavel”and am grateful for the two years I have served inthis capacity. We are fortunate, and from what Iunderstand, somewhat unique amongsynagogues: we have a “President-elect” position,so we know who is next in line. I welcome andcongratulate Sheldon Freidenreich as he preparesto take over the reins.
By the time one becomes President of ourcongregation, he or she has likely served on theExecutive Committee for six years or more, typically following serving as a Trustee. That’s alot of volunteer time and many, many Thursdayevening meetings! Our Trustees and Officersdemonstrate a commitment to our Temple familyand organization that can’t be beat. I want tothank our Trustees and Officers for the support, guidance, inspiration and wisdom theyindividually and collectively have provided meover these two years and the years leading up tomy presidency. And, perhaps most importantly, for their good humor and many laughs.
We are fortunate and again somewhatunique among synagogues: most of our Past-Presidents remain active and engaged. They areinvaluable assets and I thank them for theircontinued commitment to our shul.
Our monthly Board Meetings begin with aD’var Torah from Rabbi Malomet. He serves asour moral compass and I thank him for his clearthinking and insight, which help clarify the manycomplex issues.
Our committees, their chairs andmembers, and our auxiliary organizations andtheir Presidents and members drive our Templeactivity. Some of our committees are short-term,designed to address a unique need. Others are
standing committees, overseeing, designing andguiding our Temple activities, programs andfunctions. I thank our committee chairs andmembers for their enthusiasm, knowledge andcreativity; our committees are critical to ourpresent and future.
Our staff. They are jugglers supreme!HPCT-CAE, the building, is a busy place! Mostknow we have an expert, warm and professionalstaff. Their loyalty and commitment to ourTemple family not only assures that the day-to-day operations run smoothly and efficiently, buthelp guide us into the future. I want to thankthem for the guidance, support and manyreminders they provided me.
Most importantly, I want to thank YOU,our congregants and extended Temple family.Your presence on Shabbat and yom tovim createsthe culture of warmth and inclusion for which wehave become known. Your participation inprograms and events helps motivate us to domore, and to do it better or differently if need be.Your financial support enables our Temple toopen its doors each day and evening, to keep thelights and air conditioning or heat on, pays staffsalaries, and provides sacred space for daily prayer.A special thank-you to our Shomrei Ha-Kehilla;they are helping to sustain us financially andensure our future.
And, of course, I thank my husband, Al,for his support and understanding of my manymeetings. (You will be glad to know, hecontinues to be happy eating pierogi on the manynights I am at my “second home” and not homewith him for dinner.) A special thank you to Alfor the many times he has accompanied me to theTemple in the middle of the night when the alarmhas gone off!
Todah Rabah to all!

Dear All,
I had four wonderful years as the Presidentof the Highland Park Conservative Temple –Congregation Anshe Emeth Sisterhood. While Iam leaving as President, I am enthusiastic to jointhe ranks of other women and continue myinvolvement in the Sisterhood when dancingZumba, helping to cook for our terrific meals andsoup, reading books for the book discussions andattending our award winning programs. I amsure that the fabulous year ahead will be filledwith fun, laughter and camaraderie. I take thisopportunity to welcome the new SisterhoodBoard Members who have dedicated themselvesto making things happen in Sisterhood as we raisemonies for the Temple community.
Let’s start with a really gigantic thank youto all of the women of Sisterhood who made ourCongregational Friday Night Dinner, held onMay 8, such a success. Thanks especially toLynette Seader, Dinner Program and HeleneKnee and Susan Winter, Program and DinnerChairs for everything they did to make the dinnercome to fruition. The Cooking Committee wasextensive, consisting of Sue Kheel, Lynette Seader,Joy Kuchinsky, Ivy Spears, Heather and RebeccaKizner, Marlene Herman, Rachel Modiano,Marsha Goldwasser, Debbie Gerber, and CindyPatrych Brotman. If you missed it, you missed aculinary delight with chicken cacciatore, Italianvegetable soup, white bean dip and eggplant stew…. are you salivating yet? Please plan on joiningus for next year’s dinner in the spring as aparticipant and as a cook. When we cooktogether we share fun, camaraderie, and cookingtips.
Another special thing that occurred inMay was the Women’s League of ConservativeJudaism Garden State Region Spring Conference. We hosted it in our congregation where we wereable to shine the light of the region on ourbeautiful building, our excellent Rabbi, whodelivered a D’var Torah, and our tallitot project.
There are always Sisterhood events, even inthe summer. The very first event is our 11thAnnual Installation and NeshamaAwards/Women of Torah Ceremony and Dinner. This will take place on Monday, June 8. High Holiday Permanent Seats AvailableHigh Holidays 2015 are quickly approaching and we wanted to advise our congregants about permanent seat availability.
Permanent seat ownership guarantees that you will have the same seats every year for the High Holidays when you purchase High Holiday tickets. The purchase of these permanent seats also establishes a physical presence between our member families and the sanctuary.
In response to this past High Holydays’ inspiring services, we have had some recent requests for permanent seats and we want tomake the congregation aware that these seats can be purchased at any time. The price of each new seat is $1,250 and, depending on the numberof seats purchased, you can be billed over one or two years. As always, you do not need to own permanent seats in order to buy seats for theholidays. If you would like to discuss the purchase of seats, please call the Temple office.
ReminderHigh Holyday seat applications will be arriving in your mailbox soon.
Please take the time NOW to fill it out and return to the Temple Office with your check.

To use these devices, you must provide a set of standard 3.5mm stereo headphones (like those used formost iPods and MP3 players).

The children at Above & Beyondcelebrated their pride and love for Israel with amorning full of Yom Ha’atzmaut festivities. Thechildren packed their own uniquely decoratedsuitcases and boarded a plane headed to the HolyLand. While in flight, they read a bookdescribing the different cities and places to visit inIsrael. As soon as they arrived, they joined in aparade where they danced and proudly wavedtheir blue and white flags. After the parade, withtheir passports in hand, their first stop was to visitthe Kotel (Western Wall) where they said the
Shema and other tefillot (prayers). They spent therest of their visit taking in the sights, smells andtastes of the country including: excavating oldcoins in an archeological dig, shopping withshekalim in the shuk (market), feasting on falafeland hummus at a café, and navigating the trafficpatterns in the cities.
Registration is now open for the 2015-16 school year. The classes are already filling upand we look forward to a robust enrollment forthe Fall!
