SERIES POINTS & AWARDS 7. The Great American Solo Series (GASS) will be comprised of typically 6 to 8 Solo events per year.

This number will be set before the beginning of the competition season, but may be subject to change due to circumstances beyond the GASS Committee’s control (eg. loss of an event site).

8. GASS Series Points and Championship Awards will be awarded as follows:

DNF .......................................................... = 20 Points, DNS (one day of a two-day event) .......... = 10 Points, DNS (one-day event) or DSQ .................. = 0 Points.

• Competitors who complete at least one timed run on each day of an event will receive a minimum of 20 points.

• Competitors must compete in the number of GASS events indicated in the following table in the same Car Class to qualify for Series Awards. Only one Award will be given to competitors who qualify in more than one Car Class. Competitors' best GASS event finishes will be used to com-pute Series Points in each Car Class based on the table below. The score for each event used for Series Points will be rounded to the nearest whole point. Maximum score for non-winners is 99 points.

Total Number of Events in Series Number of Events to Qualify Number of Events Used 4 2 3 5 3 3 6 3 4 7 3 4 8 3 5 9 3 5

• Class Series Points ties in award positions will be re-solved by using a cumulative normalized ranking based on PAX/RTP Indexed results for each best GASS event finishes. Lowest “P” wins contested position and num-ber of total awards in Class will be adjusted accordingly.

• Series Awards will be distributed in accordance with the current SCCA Solo Rule Book, based on the average number of competitors in each Car Class or the total number of Series-eligible en-trants in each Car Class, whichever provides more awards. Non-eligible competitors finishing in a Series Award position will not be awarded an Award and the award positions for the associated Class will be increased by one if more eligible competitors exist in the Class.

• A “Rookie of the Year” Award will be awarded in accordance with the GASS Points structure. To be eligible, competitors must have never competed in more than two (2) GASS (or predecessor CENDIV Series) events during any competition year. Rookie Points will be awarded beginning with the event at which the competitor declares eligibility. The index shown below will be used to adjust competitors’ times for award of Rookie Points for each event.

2008 PAX/RTP Index Table

9. Series Championship Awards will be presented at an Awards & Dinner Banquet to be held after com-pletion of the GASS competition season. The Banquet time and place will be announced in the GASS Bulletin.

COMPETITORS 10. Competitors may enter each event only once and may not enter an event in more than one Car Class. 11. Competitors must be CenDiv or GLDiv SCCA members prior to the last event they run to earn Series

Awards. 12. The Official GASS Logo Sticker must be displayed in an upright position on both sides of each com-

petitor's vehicle during GASS event competition.

June-July 2008 6

From the Chair…… The first event of the Great American Solo Series is now in the history books and the second event in Columbus, Ohio is coming up in a few weeks. By the time most folks get this bulletin, that event will have also taken place. The event hosted by Saginaw Valley Region had a twist to it in that competitors were offered three courses over the two days of timed competition! Those who traveled to Oscoda certainly were able to get enough runs in! Thanks to SVR for hosting another great event! The event in Columbus hosted by OVR also has a baseball theme since the event is being held at Cooper Stadium. This is another great place to run and the courses are always fun. Thanks to OVR for hosting an event this year. The third event is taking place back in Oscoda – this time hosted by Detroit Region. That event takes place July 12-13. Look for the information in this bulletin. Our last event is going to be held at Grissom and it is the Divisional Championship event. Something different is going to be tried this year. We are going to hold our year-end banquet for the series on that Saturday night at the site. Dee Schweikle and Marlene Obenour have been working on putting the final touches on the meal. Check out the event information flyer, also in the bulletin. Our major sponsor, SoloPerformance.com will be at our divisional event and will be able to join us at the banquet. They will be supplying several of the goodies and also the trophies. Please check with them when your club needs trophies for any events. Jan Rick and Dave Whitworth have lots of good ideas and are very easy to work with. Thanks to them for their support of our habit! Also, thanks to Vitek and the AXWare Timing system. Vitek has been working with Andy and Tammy Bell, the registrars for the divisional, and is helping out with spon-sorship for the series and also that event. Thanks, Vitek! Finally, don’t forget to get your tires from Mid-Atlantic Motorsport. Tom Reichel can get tires shipped to you quickly and is continuing with his contingency program again in 2008. Thanks, Tom!

See you in a parking lot. Velma

Note from the Editor…. By the time you read this article, the first two GASS events will be history. That’s half of the 2008 season!

To the Solo Directors, event organizers and RE’s of the CenDiv and GLDiv regions, it is not too early to be thinking about hosting a Series event for 2009. If you have acquired a new site for 2008 that you think will be a good place to play for a Series event for 2009, let a committee member know. We would be happy to talk to you about hosting an event for 2009.

I expect the fuel prices are keeping some competitors from competing this year. I think we all are hoping for a break with that issue.

All four of the GASS events for 2008 are packing a lot of extras into their schedule -- more bang for the buck! That makes traveling a little easier for all of us.

My apologies to OVR for the misprint in the schedule. Instead of OSU Sta-dium, it should be Cooper Stadium.

Hopefully we will meet soon at a Solo site!

The Great American Solo Series (GASS)

June-July 2008 10

Triple Play at Oscoda In the world of baseball, triple play means “Yerrrrrr Out!” This phrase used with the first Great American Solo Series for the 2008 season took on an entirely new mean-ing!

The Saginaw Valley Region team, led by Head Ump Sean Tate, put on an event that was packed with just about as much autocrossing and food as any player could possi-bly want. The weekend started out with a test session on Friday; breakfast on Satur-day morning with one course (4 runs!); a barbequed lunch; and another 4 runs on Sat-urday afternoon. We were finished on Saturday by 5 pm. Sunday morning the com-petitors had another 4 runs at a course designed by Al Chan from Detroit Region. We were out of there, after trophy presentation, by noon! The courses were fun – the food was good – SVR did another great job of hosting a GASS event.

There were 64 competitors that participated in the three course event. There were a few single car classes but the competition was very good in all classes. Some of the bigger classes were BS, ESP, CM and ST. Clemens Burger from Indy Region was top raw time AND PAX time for the weekend in his BM LeGrand. Al Chan was the fast-est in SS; David Redwine took honors in BS, with Kenneth Tsang close behind; CS was a lone driver with Dan Stone, but he was one person that several people in other classes were chasing; Mike Mitchell was the winner in DS; Dave Siniff took 1st place in Big Red; GS was won by Stephen Dormann with Jim Wylie close behind in 2nd; HS and HSL were single car classes with Sean Murphy in HS and a rookie, Kayla Koenig in HSL; CSP and CSPL went to Raleigh and Velma Boreen from Indianapolis; DSP was won by Doug Harvey; ESP was the battle of the Mustangs, with Dave Feighner winning and Larry MacLeod in 2nd; FSP and FSPL was won by Mike Burgess and Lisa Krueger in the VW; CP had a new competitor with Stacey DeSpelder getting a ride in the Feighnermobile and he won his class (how about that horsepower, Sticky!); John Lieberman won FP in his Porsche; GP had a 64 Triumph Spitfire driven by Steve Alger, who won that class; BM and BML went to Clemens Burger and Joan Karnas; CM is picking up this year where it ended last year with Don Elzinga taking the win over Ray Thomas (the battle ensues!); Chuck Spera was the winner in DM; EM had an interesting vehicle in it – an 08 Trailblazer and it had really a cool sound to it (can you do that same thing to my Yukon XL?) and the class was won by Brent Owen; FM had two guys that are sharing a car and their team name is a combination of their names – Franctom Racing – Les Francisco won over Tom Buckman; ST honors went back to Indiana and Travis Robuck winning that class, with Bob Poling taking 2nd; another 1st place in STU came back to Indiana with Chuck McMillion taking honors; SM had good competition with Ashley DuPree taking 1st and his co-driver, Terrance Daniels taking 2nd; Abby DuPree was the winner in SML; the trophy in SM2 made its way back to Ontario with Marty Schiratti; F125 was won by Christian Hubbell and finally the FJB trophy went to Jackson MacLeod.

Thanks to everyone who made the trip to Oscoda in May – the weather was good (no rain or snow!) – the food was great – and the courses were the best! Velma Boreen

The Great American Solo Series (GASS) Region Championship Award Rules

2008 will mark the initial year for the Great American Solo Series (GASS) Region Championship Award; a trophy that is awarded to the Region/Club with the most consistent participation in the GASS Champion-ship. This award has been initiated to help increase attendance at GASS events as well as to encourage Region/Club members to participate in other Region/Club events. The GASS Region Championship Award is not affiliated with the GASS Event Of The Year Award. The following rules govern the GASS Region Championship Award, which will be awarded to a Region/Club each year at the GASS Awards Banquet.

1. The GASS Championship will maintain this trophy as a traveling award of which the winning Region/Club will have possession for the following year.

2. Championship Points will be awarded to each Region/Club based on the number of trophies awarded to Region/Club members during each GASS Championship event.

3. Points for trophies will only be awarded for non-hosting Region/Club members.

4. Regions/Clubs hosting events will receive one Point for each trophy awarded to members of other Regions/Clubs (non-hosting Region/Club) at their event.

5. Only trophies awarded per SCCA trophy distribution guidelines (see current year Solo Rulebook) will be eligible for Championship Points.

6. The GASS Championship Pointskeeper, or designee, will keep the official Region Championship Award Points.

7. Only entrants who are SCCA members will count towards Region Championship Award Points. The Pointskeeper will verify membership via entrant membership numbers submitted by each event-hosting Region/Club along with Official Results. Official Results must include the following before Points accrual will be considered*: • Entrant’s Full Name, USPS Address, and Phone Number, • SCCA Region/Club, SCCA Membership Number, and Expiration Date, • Car Class & Number, Make, Model, and Color, • Results of any Protests, • Raw Times with Penalties for Each Run. *This information will only be used for entrant membership verification, results publishing, and GASS Bulletin mailing list updates.

8. The Pointskeeper may verify membership with the SCCA National Office before awarding Points.

9. The trophy must be returned to the GASS Championship Chairperson by the last GASS event of the season.

10. The GASS Chairperson will have the winning Region’s/Club’s name and year engraved on the trophy and will present it to the winning Region/Club at the GASS Awards Banquet.

11. In case of a tie, the Region/Club with the highest total number of Points awarded from non-hosted events will be deemed the winner. A consolation prize will be awarded to the other Region/Club.

12. Only SCCA Regions/Clubs residing in the Great Lakes and Central Divisions of the SCCA are eligi-ble for this Award.

13. The rules governing this award can be modified by the GASS Committee as necessary.

Great American Solo Series Comes to Columbus On May 30 through June 1st OVR hosted its first Great American Solo Series Event at Cooper Stadium in Columbus. As the weekend grew near, the weather reports grew more dire. As the race organizer, I was very concerned that severe weather would cause headaches all weekend. Not least of my wor-ries was that I would be the one in a tent! On top of that I knew this weekend was the weekend of Jack Nicklaus’s Memorial Golf tournament which is noto-rious for suffering through rain and storms. (Something about an Indian curse for building the golf course on sacred land!)

Friday Night

Friday dawned clear and bright and Neva Hoover called at about 10:00 to say they were already building the course and everything would be set to walk when competitors showed up that evening. Tonya Smith had the popcorn ma-chine and pressed a couple of turkey fryers into action to boil hotdogs. I got to the site around 4:45 and starting getting the registration area set up as well as starting to organize the registration welcome packets. Several local drivers came in to help out and the Zeislers came up to help with tech. At 5:30 we were serving Hotdogs, peanuts, popcorn and chips to our Friday night regis-trants. Thanks again to Mike and Tonya Smith who made sure we had plenty to eat. Thanks also to Tammy, Dianne Packard and Simi Ritch who were checking people in and handing out welcome packets. By 8:00 we were wind-ing down and packing up for the predicted bad weather that was to come..

At 2:00 in the morning, as I was laying in my tent, I starting seeing flashes of lightning. I quickly bailed out and headed for the van only to see the wind pick up and pull my tent stakes right out of the ground. Back out I went into the gale and quickly rescued the tent before it departed for the east coast. I spent the rest of the night reclining comfortably in the dry van!

Saturday

By 7:00 on Saturday morning the storm had passed and everything was drying out. No damage was done to anything and I believe Team HART may have actually weathered the storm in their tent! Soon competitors were showing up and everyone was in high spirits with the sun peeking through the clouds. We enjoyed the variety of cars and classes that attended. I don’t think I have ever seen so many CM cars in one place and several other classes that are usually not at our local events participated as well. By drivers meeting we had blue sky and we were off and running by about 9:45. The first heat was little rough as we worked through some timing issues, but by second heat we had found the rhythm and started moving quickly through the runs. On Saturday we did 5 runs with each run in the mid 40’s to low 50’s for most car classes.

June-July 2008 29

By late afternoon the wind was gusting up and we had a couple small delays to fix the timing boxes which had started to blow along the ground and to re-place some radios which seemed to be malfunctioning. About that time I also had a report from a competitor that it was storming heavily at the golf tourna-ment and they had halted play. At Cooper we still had blue sky with puffy clouds. We finished up at about 4:30 Saturday. Post competition we had sev-eral activities. The divisional chiefs met to talk about the divisional race, Ra-leigh Boreen put on a Safety Steward Seminar, and for the rest we brought in Pizzas to eat while Neva reworked the course to configure it for Sunday’s runs.

Sunday

On Sunday, even the weatherman was predicting clear and beautiful weather. All day it was in the low 80’s with a slight breeze. You couldn’t ask for better. We were able to get going little earlier than normal (At least for OVR) Sunday and had cars entering the course by 9:15. We still had the pace from Saturday and quickly moved from an announced 3 runs to 4 runs per heat. The course was very fast, but still had some technical bits. Typical time was now in the mid to low 40’s. We moved through the entire 147 driver field by 3:00. We finished up with trophy presentations and cleanup. By 4:00 most everyone was already on the road home. I want to thank all of my chiefs for a great event, as well as the members of the GASS committee and participants who gave me great feedback and advice all weekend. I also want to thank everyone who drove in from several hours away. It was very nice to meet everyone. We hope you enjoyed your visit with OVR and we hope that you will come back to race with us at a future event!
