President’s Report for June It was a good meeting for those who attended, reports were given on our very busy month of May starting with the Volunteers Festival on Saturday the 16th held in the Gallery Grounds. Jan Farrell, Karen Cornish and Bernice Daher were a big hit offering to sketch portraits of the public for free in the gallery. Jill Cairns and I did two demonstration paintings which were raffled through the day and created quite a lot of interest. Our hard working raffle ticket sellers (Debbie, Robyn T, Maria, Rita) raised $240 which will be donated to the Volunteers Group. Jan Wilson guided adults and children in producing their own paintings to take home. Our involvement created good publicity and a lot of interest in the Gallery and the HVFAA. Slice of Haven this year was our eighth year. As usual Rita, Jenny, Jean, Jan Wilson ran the children’s art competition and Harold, Jill and I did three demo paintings that were raffled and raised $ 600 which will be presented to the Hastings Women and Children’s Refuge. We had quite a few members helping sell raffle tickets and talking to the public about the Association (Kim, Terri, Robyn, Fran, Robin, Janet, Debbie & Maria). We got good publicity from our presence so once again thanks to all who helped as it is hard work being at these functions. The H V F A A has been in the Gallery 12 months in July so we are going to have a Birthday Bash on the 12th you will find an invitation in this edition. You need to RSVP so we can plan catering, so see you there. Last but not least July is our Annual General Meeting and will be held at the Gallery. Nominations are open for anyone who wants to stand for office as the present committee stands down, nomination forms are available via our web site, attached on your email or enclosed with mail-‐out of Fineprint. At our next meeting there will be the usual soup luncheon before the meeting starting 11.30am. Brian Barker.

Confluence in practice: The coming together of representatives of our three art groups to discuss the upcoming exhibition
Alison Lockley and Fran Daly recently attended a weekend workshop with John Wilson at Forster. The Great Lakes Art Society had a couple of vacancies that they eagerly took up. Under his tutoring they both learnt a great deal about painting the iconic Gum Tree in oils

“Pathways to Abstraction” Glasshouse Regional Gallery 5 Feb – 20 March 2016 Below is what was submitted to the Niomi Sands and has been accepted. As yet we’ve been unable to meet with her to discuss the finer details such closing/submission dates as she is overseas. As usual you will need to submit digital photos of your work and a short statement about how you achieved your finished result. There is a possibility that only the abstract painting will be exhibited however a photo of your other painting will be included with the statement. We hope to meet with her in July and issue an entry form shortly after the meeting. In the meantime we should start thinking of our subject matter and start putting it into practice. I should image that we will need to submit our work by November. Exhibition Concept The majority of our artists are traditional or representational artists. Many of these express the desire to be more expressive and interpretive-‐or just looser. Building on the success of our recent exhibition Under the Influence where each artist submitted two paintings, we propose that each artist submits two paintings one of a scene/figure/object painted in the artist’s usual style. In the second painting the artist would take the same subject with all or part of it painted in a more abstract way. The level of abstraction would naturally, be along a continuum, depending on the artist-‐hence the “Pathway.” Your first painting should be no larger than A2 size. Rita Carosi 6586 3236
