2018 YEAR IN REVIEW LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR On behalf of the BikeWalkKC board and staff, I am pleased to present this report on our 2018 activities. Together with our members, funders, volunteers, and partners, we were able to expand our impact, grow new programs, and increase our collaborations throughout the Kansas City region and beyond. I invite you to read on to learn more about the past year, and join us as we progress into 2019 and beyond to “redefine our streets as places for people to build a culture of active living.” Eric Rogers Casual Animal Brewing, located at 17th and McGee in KCMO, opened in 2018 and launched “Local Motive,” adopting a new nonprofit each quarter. BikeWalkKC is honored to be selected as their first nonprofit, receiving event revenue and keg proceeds from a beer specially brewed for us. BikeWalkKC advocated for a Negligent Driver Bill introduced in Kansas Senate; unfortunately, this bill died in committee later that spring. Efforts are underway to reintroduce the bill in 2019. The City of Westwood held an open house for the public to provide input on a Complete Street plan for 47th Street. BikeWalkKC was part of the project team that studied the options. BLAST goes on the Road: Topeka Public Schools and the Topeka Cycle Project invited BikeWalkKC’s Education staff to provide curriculum updates for their version of the popular youth education program. With the start of Bike Month, we kicked off “The 100” Membership Campaign, an effort to sign up or renew at least 100 BikeWalkKC members. The campaign included a special partnership with Boulevard Tours & Recreation Center, which provided extra perks and donations to encourage and inspire people to join, including a special Bike to Boulevard and Member Party on May 30, in partnership with the City of KCMO. Altogether, we welcomed 142 members to the BikeWalkKC family! Kansas City BCycle provided 30% off all Annual Memberships throughout the month of May, and offered free BCycle rides on Bike to Work Day. With support from the Health Forward Foundation, BikeWalkKC and administrators from the Unified Government and KCMO traveled to Indianapolis for the Places for Bikes Conference, May 1-3. The conference agenda focused on a four-part formula for building better biking: Plan, Build, Engage, and Measure. The Kansas City American Planning Association held their 2018 Symposium on May 4, including a panel presentation with BikeWalkKC’s director of planning, Thomas Morefield, and other local and national leaders. Chicken n Pickle in North Kansas City hosted a Tour de Bier fundraiser on May 7, providing free play, great food and drink, and a fun raffle. With support from the Health Forward Foundation and in partnership with the Independence Avenue CID, BikeWalkKC’s policy team held a series of Complete Streets Advocacy Workshops, May 10-June 21. The seven-part, hands-on series covered a range of topics from identifying barriers to effective messaging and temporary traffic-calming. In anticipation of the Tour de Bier, we hosted two warm-up events in May: a special Maintain Your Ride for Tour participants, and a warm-up right in partnerships with the local Mondays Aren’t So Bad cycling group. The City of Overland Park, OP Chamber of Commerce, and Visit OP held a series of ten “community conversation” events for interactive discussions about city’s master plan, ForwardOP. The plan includes choices for connected and well-maintained sidewalks, bike lanes, and trials, and ongoing implementation of the City’s Bicycle Master Plan. International Bike to Work Day was Friday, May 18, and businesses and organizations throughout the metro got in on the celebration, with encouragement “Commuter Coffee Stops” held around the region. The 7th annual Tour de Bier was held on Sunday, May 20. Named “best organized bike ride” by readers of The Pitch, the Tour drew more than 1,200 registrants from 23 states and 95 cities. The Tour de Bier included three routes that traveled to nine breweries across the metro. For the second year, East High School students and special guests participated in a group ride to KCMO City Hall to participate in the proclamation by Mayor James of Bike Month on May 1. BikeWalkKC received its first-ever grant from the Shumaker Family Foundation to support education programs that create sustainable transportation habits. BikeWalkKC was awarded its first ever grant from the William J. Brace Charitable Trust, Bank of America, N.A., Trustee to support our Local Spokes youth education programs. The City of Lenexa began a Complete Streets study to ensure its streets are more accessible for pedestrians, cyclists, and other vulnerable road users. BikeWalkKC received support from the Menorah Heritage Foundation to support expansion and evaluation of our newest Youth Education program, Bike Club. Onelife Glow Cycle, March 9: BikeWalkKC teamed up with Onelife Fitness KC in the Power & Light District for a warm-up event for the 2018 Tour de Bier: Glow Cycle. This fun fundraiser included glow- in-the-dark accessories, refreshments, and a raffle with great prizes. The City of Mission held a special “Give-a-Bike/Take-a-Bike” event in partnership with BikeWalkKC on April 5 at The Bar on Johnson Drive. Bike donations were collected, and then fixed up and repaired by BikeWalkKC to be provided to kids and families in need as part of the City of Mission’s Holiday Adoption Program. Complete Streets Conference in Nashville: BikeWalkKC participated in “Intersections: Creating Culturally Complete Streets” in Nashville, TN, April 3-4. The conference included national leaders in Complete Streets and creative placemaking, bringing together advocates, engineers, designers, and artists to explore opportunities for collaboration. The City of KCMO held a public meeting on April 24 to review initial plans for a Paseo Gateway. BikeWalkKC and other advocates had concerns with that initial design, primarily because parts of it would that would be an exception to the newly passed Complete Streets ordinance. Subsequently, the City has revised the plan to address the most pressing concerns. The revised plan includes fully separated, protected bike lanes connecting both north/south and east/west routes. REI Overland Park and a generous individual provided funding to support a new trail, to be built and maintained by East High School’s Bike Club. The trail is scheduled to be completed in Spring 2019. The City of Kansas City held a series of public meetings for input about creating bike lanes along the full length of The Paseo. BikeWalkKC advocated that the plan include a road diet and protected bike lanes/bike path. The BikeWalkKC Board of Directors welcomed its newest member: Jake Jacobson, Director of Public Relations, Children’s Mercy Kansas City. In partnership with The Whole Person, BikeWalkKC staff, board members, and volunteers participated in tandem rides for individuals with low-vision on June 16. The summer editions of Confident City Cycling and Maintain Your Ride clinics were held in June. In partnership with the American Heart Association, BikeWalkKC held a community workshop for discussion of walkability in the neighborhoods along Prospect Avenue on June 29. Since then, we have evaluated existing data related to walkability along the corridor and reached out to neighborhood residents to elicit feedback on prominent pedestrian paths and neighborhood assets. Next steps will include additional evaluation based on recommendations from neighborhood leaders. VOLUNTEERS MEMBERS JANUARY Buttonwood Art Space hosted a Sponsor Reception for past and prospective sponsors and partners of the Tour de Bier. Crossroads-based distillery, Lifted Spirits, hosted a Bike to Yoga event and distillery tour on Sunday, February 11. The event was a fundraiser for the Women Bike KC Initiative. BikeWalkKC hosted three adult education programs: Confident City Cycling, Maintain Your Ride, and a first-ever Members Only Open Shop Night. We teamed up with KC Community Gardens (KCCG) for a first-ever Earth Day Ride and tour of three urban gardens and an orchard, followed by happy hour with KC Bier Co. back at the KCCG. The City of KCMO began a series of public meetings to review plans for Complete Streets plans for 39th Street, 43rd Street, Broadway Boulevard, Southwest Trafficway, and Wornall Road. Hundreds of advocates came out to speak up for better biking and walking in midtown. APRIL MAY A Women-only Confident City Cycling series was held in May, providing hands-on instruction in a safe and supportive environment, led by women, for women. JUNE On June 22, BikeWalkKC and the American Heart Association installed “pop-up traffic calming” assets at the intersection of 35th and Askew in East KCMO. The event demonstrated how minor changes could lead to major benefits for pedestrians, cyclists, and transit users. The event was made possible with support from TransitCenter, TrailNet, and the Missouri APA chapter. JULY AUGUST SEPTEMBER We teamed up again with our friends at Onelife Fitness for an 80’s-themed spin class on July 19. Themed “Women, Wine, and Wellness,” the sold-out event raised funds for the biennial Women’s Bike Summit. With support from The H & R Block Foundation and the Health Forward Foundation, BikeWalkKC launched a new initiative: Bike Share for All, a bike share equity program. This project is designed to provide deeply discounted annual memberships to those most in need of transportation option. The pilot includes partnerships with Hope Faith Ministries, Metro Lutheran Ministry, MainCor (Midtown KC Now) and the Westside Housing Organization. BikeWalkKC’s dedicated volunteers helped us pack up and move out of our home on Gillham and into the Wonder Shops + Flats at 30th and Troost. Thanks to all who pitched in! Stockyards Brewing Co. in the KCMO West Bottoms hosted a Handlebar Happy Hour and fundraiser for BikeWalkKC on August 8, joined by more than 40 “Thirsty Thursday” riders. The impaired driver who struck and killed cyclist Anthony Saluto in 2012 was sentenced to just 120 days of incarceration and five years of probation on August 16. BikeWalkKC, Anthony’s family, and advocates continue to work to ensure his memory lives on and vulnerable road users are protected and served. The third Confident City Cycling event was held, marking the final class at our Gillham headquarters. BikeWalkKC staff participated in a new “unconference,” Transportation Camp, at the Kauffman Foundation on August 25. The event brought together transportation professionals, technologists, academics and others interested in the intersection of urban transportation and technology. In Wyandotte County, four new schools began development of Walking School Bus programs. August brought the ribbon-cutting for a long-advocated-for project: protected bike lanes on Armour Boulevard in KCMO. City officials, administrators, advocates, residents, and project staff gathered on August 3 for the ribbon-cutting and a group ride along the full route, stretching from Broadway to the Paseo. On August 24, the City of North Kansas City cut the ribbon on the region’s very first two-way cycletrack, on Diamond Parkway. The ribbon-cutting event featured free rides on Kansas City BCycles and opportunities for the public to experience the new amenities. The 3rd Women’s Bike Summit was held on September 15, co-hosted by KC Parks & Recreation at the Southeast Community Center. It was a record-breaking year, with more than 140 attendees, a Nonprofit Village, group rides, and sessions for riders of all ages and skill levels. Blue Bicycle Health & Fitness hosted our final Women-only Confident City Cycling series of the year. Later in the month, we held our first Maintain Your Ride clinic at the new office in the Wonder building. The Kansas City Area Transportation Authority and Kansas City BCycle launched a new transit option: Bike + Bus pass. This combined pass allows monthly transit users to access unlimited 60-minute BCycle rides. On September 29, RideKC held a community meeting to discuss a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) study for Independence Avenue, one of the most dense and diverse stretches in KCMO. On September 28, Downtown KCK came alive with pop-up shops, street art, bike lanes, crosswalks, and more. A partnership of Better Block KC, the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, KS, and BikeWalkKC, the family-friendly event took place on 6th Street between Ann and Tauromee. In September, BikeWalkKC and Children’s Mercy partnered with the community and local schools in the Northeast KCMO to conduct two quick-build projects: one at Van Brunt and St. John, and the other at 10th and Benton. The designs aimed at slowing traffic and creating a safer, more comfortable environment for pedestrians. These were part of our Aetna Foundation-funded Cultivating Healthy Communities project. Director of bike share and business services, Eric Vaughan represented BikeWalkKC and Kansas City BCycle at the 2018 North American Bikeshare Association (NABSA) conference in Portland, OR. The conference joined with People for Bike’s Better Bike Share partnership for sessions on equity and trends in shared use mobility. BikeWalkKC’s policy director, Eric Bunch, worked with the Missouri Humanities Council for a group ride to explore KCMO’s bike infrastructure and its environmental impact on September 13. For the second year, the Jackson County Rock Island Rail Authority and BikeWalkKC led a Bike to the Royals outing to cheer on our Boys in Blue on September 30. OCTOBER On October 10, schools across the metro participated in International Walk to School Day. Greater Kansas City’s celebration of Walk to School Day is organized by BikeWalkKC, KC Healthy Kids, and the Mid-America Regional Council. Individual schools organized their own events, while we provided technical assistance, advice, and publicity. Kansas City BCycle partnered with the City of Kansas City, Missouri’s new, expansive arts festival, Open Spaces, to provide discounted rides for users to explore the art installations around the city. The festival included about 40 visual arts exhibitions on display in an “Expanded Field” that spanned the metro, making self-guided tours by bike a natural fit. The City of Overland Park, Overland Park Chamber of Commerce, and project partners revealed an updated Master Plan, ForwardOP, at a public open house that drew more than 200 participants. The community-driven plan includes ongoing implementation and updates to the City’s Bicycle Master Plan. With support from the Health Forward Foundation, BikeWalkKC partnered with the Kansas City Chapter of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (KC ITE) to offer a training, “Planning and Designing for Cyclists.” The training included a classroom session followed by a group ride to provide a real-world experience of local facilities from the perspective of people who bike and walk. The American Planning Association’s 2018 Bi-State Conference took place October 24-26 at the InterContinental on the Plaza in Kansas City, drawing more than 350 individuals, including professional planners, planning officials, lawyers, architects, and developers from across the Kansas City metro and the Midwest region. For the second year, BikeWalkKC received support from the Oppenstein Brothers Foundation for our helmet safety education programming. Oppenstein support is expected to enable us to give away 3,000 helmets to youth and adults in 2018-2019. BikeWalkKC’s Youth Education programs expanded to include a new pedestrian safety curriculum, designed to teach the basics of walking safely to preschool students at the Columbus Park and Park Hill YMCAs. With support from New Belgium Brewery, we teamed up with Family Bicycles and Bier Station to host a fun, costumed Bike Rodeo event on October 27. At the 2018 BCycle World conference in Madison, Wisconsin, BikeWalkKC team members Michael Conley and Paige Jones received their Bosch electric mechanics’ certification. NOVEMBER DECEMBER Kansas City Tweed Ride – Velocipede & Tweed Indeed commenced on Saturday, November 3rd, 2018 at the Colonnade in Kessler Park in historic Northeast KCMO for a day of sophisticated social revelry upon the most marvelous machines ever devised. BikeWalkKC was a part of the planning team for the Unified Government’s new Northeast Area Master Plan, formally adopted in November. Our work focused on how community needs could be addressed in the Northeast area by creating more equitable mobility options, using infrastructure as a catalyst for investment, and supporting more responsive policies and projects. On November 9, BikeWalkKC opened its doors for a New Office Open House, welcoming members, partners, neighbors, and the general public. A new Bike Share station was installed in front of the Wonder Shops + Flats building at 30th and Troost, connecting the bike sharing system to transit services for improved first/ last mile access from the east side of midtown KCMO. Thanks to the generosity of the Kansas City community, hundreds of bikes were donated to BikeWalkKC in 2018. Through our Earn-a-Bike, Bike Club, and community engagement programs, more than 250 bikes were given away to individuals in need in 2018. The Kansas City Area Transportation Authority and BikeWalkKC announced a new partnership to bring smart, electric-assist bikes to Kansas City’s bike share program. The newly branded RideKC Bike program, powered by Drop Mobility, launched in December, marking a first-of-its-kind public/private/ nonprofit effort in Kansas City. A total of 150 bikes are expected to roll out by Spring 2019. On December 4, AARP members and community members came together for a Bike Build Night at BikeWalkKC. Participants spent a hands-on evening fixing up youth bicycles and and learning about basic bike maintenance.
