On June 1, 2019, I processed into the Cathedral of St. Louis

King of France as a deacon. I left the cathedral as a priest

of Jesus Christ. As I look back at my first year as a priest, I

give thanks to Almighty God for the many blessings and

for surviving my first year! They say the first five years of

the priesthood is the most difficult. I can only imagine

what awaits me in the next four years — and beyond.

Discerning the will of God is no easy task. The foundation,

as I say so often, is trust. When we come to that level of

trust, we come to internalize our Lord’s words: You did not

choose me, but I chose you (Jn. 15:16). We are all called by

God to a particular vocation. His will for us may be

something very apparent or it may be something

completely out of left field -- like when I had my call to

begin discerning the priesthood. By allowing Him to

choose you, we are filled with the grace of the Lord Jesus

Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit (2 Cor. 13:14); we are filled with the perfect

love of the Triune God.

As we celebrate Trinity Sunday, we recognize another mystery in our faith, like a vocation, which is the

Trinity. That we have One God in Three Persons. It is difficult for our minds to fully comprehend this

mystery -- without falling into heresy. Yet, it is a mystery to which we accept in faith: He who is able to

receive this, let him receive it (Matt. 19:12). I received a great gift one year ago which I received from God --

Father, Son, and Spirit. It is a humble privilege, as a priest, to impart a blessing to you all.

May almighty God bless you, the Father, and the Son, + and the Holy Spirit.

A LETTER FROM FATHER DAN

The National Collection for the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS) is a triennial collection approved by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) in 2012 and first taken in 2013. It will be taken up in the Archdiocese of New Orleans on the weekend of June 13-14, 2020. There are many organizations that support U.S. military and their families, but there is no other diocese or non-profit organization like the Archdiocese of the Military Services USA, which provides the same pastoral care and services as any other Catholic diocese, to Catholics serving in the United States Armed Forces, enrolled in U.S. Military Academies, undergoing treatment at any of the 153 Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Centers in the U.S., Puerto Rico and Guam, working in civilian jobs for the federal government beyond U.S. borders, and the families of these populations. You may visit https:// www.milarch.org/ways-to-support/ for more information.

Saint of the Week

SAINT BERNADETTE SOUBIROUS (1844-1879) Feast day: April 16 With Immaculate Mary’s “Ave Maria” for its refrain, Andy Williams’ “Village of Saint Bernadette” peaked at #7 on Billboard’s Top 40 at Christmas 1959 airing on radio stations all over America. Imagine! April 16 marks the feast of Bernardette Soubirous, the teenager who, combing a refuse heap for firewood, saw a “beautiful lady” who identified herself in words Bernadette faithfully reported to the bishop, though she did not understand their meaning: “I am the Immaculate Conception.” Relentlessly interrogated, she never wavered in her story or sweetness. Chronically ill all her life and dead at thirty-five, Bernadette left behind the shrine at Lourdes where healing waters still flow from the spring that her “beautiful lady” pointed out to her. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. ARCHDIOCESAN NEWS

Out of compliance with the precautions regarding COVID-19, Catholic Counseling Service (CCS) continues to offer telehealth services to individuals, couples, and families through the phone or video-conferencing platforms. This new and effective method of counseling allows CCS to extend our services across the archdiocese to areas we weren’t previously available. Beginning Monday, May 18th, we will resume our face-to-face counseling at our New Orleans office; however, staff and clients are required to take necessary precautions to ensure the safety of all, including wearing facemasks and maintaining 6 feet apart where possible. Through the generosity of a donor, CCS has received a grant to increase the number of clients we can assist with the cost of counseling, including providing pro bono services when necessary. CCS offers counseling for $50 a session and will continue to use a sliding scale to assist anyone looking for counseling. We are committed to removing finances as an obstacle to mental health services. Anyone interested in counseling can speak to our intake coordinator by calling our main office at 504-861-6245. If we are unable to answer a call, please leave a message with their name and preferred contact phone number and someone will return their call within the next business day to complete the intake and schedule an appointment. All calls are completely confidential. We are proud to continue our mission of providing quality and affordable counseling to the Archdiocese of New Orleans.
