Rest In Peace
Please remember in your prayers
Paul J. Hartung
May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
Countdown To Merger As we celebrate Trinity Sunday this weekend, we count down three weeks to the July 1st merger of our new parish, St. John XXIII. Perhaps we feel sad about the end of our former parishes, but let us instead remember their successes and accomplishments. We are able to profess our faith today, in the holy triune God, whose love is revealed in Jesus Christ and who has gifted us with the Spirit, because of our former parishes. They shared the gift of faith in the Trinity with us; they taught us how to pray in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. They nurtured the faith in us through the celebration of the sacraments. They brought us to the present moment to look forward with courage that we too will be able to hand on the faith in the Trinity to future generations.

Masses at St. Francis and St. Benedict The weekday Masses will be as follows:
Monday, Tuesday, and Friday
8:30 am at St. Francis 9:00 am at St. Benedict
Wednesday and Thursday
8:00 am at St. Benedict 8:30 am at St. Francis 9:00 am at St. Benedict
On Saturday and Sunday
4:00 pm, Saturday at St. Francis 5:00 pm, Saturday at St. Benedict 8:00 am, Sunday at St. Benedict 9:00 am, Sunday at St. Francis 10:00 am, Sunday at St. Benedict
Because we must limit the number of people who can be in the church, you will need to go to our website (www.sbapeters.org/mass-reservation) to reserve a seat to attend the Mass. Starting this weekend, we will live stream the Vigil Mass from St. Benedict at 5:00 pm. on Saturday evening We will also live stream the daily Mass Monday through Friday at 9:00 am. The broadcasts will be accessible from our website: sbapeters.org. After the Mass, the video will be available for you to watch anytime.
Outdoor Communion Service On Wednesday after the 9:00 am Mass, we will have an outdoor Communion Service for those who feel they cannot attend Mass . Please watch for the priest to come out of the church and follow the usher’s directions. Please allow those at Mass to exit as you line up to receive Communion.
Some Observations as We Open Fr. Bob Miller For those who are coming to church for Mass this weekend, welcome back! To those who are unable to gather, that’s perfectly fine too. Bishop Zubik has made clear that to watch the live stream Mass at home satisfies the Sunday obligation. We will continue to live stream the Mass not just on Sunday but everyday. As we began to celebrate Mass publicly during this past week, it gave us a chance to look at our new operating procedures and to make tweaks where needed. We will continue to make tweaks as needed both to our procedures and to the Mass schedule as needed. Here are a few initial observations. It’s different now in church than it was a few months ago. Please follow the directions of our volunteers who are signing you in and seating you. We are seating from the front to the back of the church. This past week, we had a few people bristle at where they were asked to sit. We have both a capacity issue and a cleaning protocol to follow in church after each Mass (and before the next Mass). If we only need to clean part of the church, it saves a lot of time and effort. Likewise, if the Mass is full, then we need to use every available space. Again, please follow the direction of the volunteers. Regarding reservations, they seem to be working well. I never dreamed of needing to have a reservation system for regular Mass. But right now reservations serve two important purposes: first, we can use them to manage our occupancy, and second, they give us a record of who attended a particular Mass for contact tracing, if someone should test positive for the virus. While I noticed a bit of nervousness this past week in people who attended Mass, I also noticed most people wanting to do the right thing and be safe. After a time or two, the new procedures will become second nature. It’s been great seeing everyone. At the same time, the virus can spread in church as easily as anywhere else. We always have to be on guard. If you are unable to gather at this time or unwilling to follow directions, then please continue to watch the live stream. Lastly, for those unable to gather, we had a little communion service outside after the 9:00 am Mass this past Wednesday, which seemed to work well. We will continue to do this after the last morning Mass on Wednesdays going forward, so that you are able to receive the Eucharist as well.

St. Ben’s Catholic Preschool Graduation The St. Ben’s Catholic Preschool Pre-K and Transition graduating class of 2020 celebrated on Thursday May 23, 2020. A car parade, organized by Sarah Manly and the staff at St. Ben’s Preschool, was held in the parking lot of the church. The parade was led by a Peters Township Fire truck, a trailer with all 84 children’s names written on it with car paint. Cars were decorated with paint, streamers, balloons, signs and all things imaginable. The children were dressed in caps and gowns, graduation hats, fancy dresses and suits. Each child was handed their diploma, by their teacher, while DJ Jake Locke played the graduation march and students name were announced. Families were also encouraged to being a donation for the Finleyville Food Pantry. As always, our families answered the call. We collected 204 items and $40 for the Food Pantry! It was a special day during an unprecedented time. The staff at St. Ben’s Preschool would like to thank all the families that participated in the graduation parade. We will miss you all, and we wish you health and happiness as you move forward to kindergarten. God Bless You All!

Safe Environment I did a rather large mailing for those that need their clearances in the next few months. Thank you to those that returned the paperwork to me. I am working from home at this time, and I would appreciate it if you would return your papers so I can process them. I need three (3) weeks to do that. I stop in the office once a week and pick up my mail. If you are no longer going to volunteer, please let me know that. I would have no way of knowing unless you tell me. The best way to reach me is by email—[email protected] Thank you for your prompt attention to this time-sensitive matter.
