MY RACORWith thousands o readers, there has to be at least two people who

are interested in tractor articles. So I need just one person besidemysel and we are good to go!!Te workhorse o my small tractor eet, is my second oldest, bu

at 32 years old, it is still going strong and is my go-to tractor othe heavy work. Its the one that ventures o o the woods road toblaze new trails and to haul out wood. It is also the only tractorthat has the space to carry the many items needed or the hard

jobs.My chainsaw sits in a case out on one rear ender, while an axe

sits inside the cabin beside my seat. Outside on the loader, I havea bracket to hold my peavey or moving logs or trees around ineeded. Until I nd a logging winch or wench, I have a 20 plusoot hunk o chain hanging o brackets on the other side o theloader. Also hanging o the loader are lopping shears or trimmingbranches (instead o using chainsaw), a two-ton manual winch ohauling me (hopeully) out o places I shouldnt have been, and ashovel (or sel burial i nothing else works)!!

Inside the cab, I have a hard hat with ace shield, that I shoulduse but never do, two or three pairs o gloves, a small maul-likehammer (protection rom coyotes and angry wie), numerousbolts and pins, tools and a airly short eight oot chain, along withgas and chain oil or my chainsaw.

Te tractor started out lie weighing a little over 4,000 lbs butnow weighs somewhere in the vicinity o 120,000 lbs and canbarely move (just kidding)!!It is amazing, when I think about it. With all o the problems in the

world both near and ar, why would I write about a tractor?? Welor one thing, tractors arent depressing!! One o the great thingabout our publications is that with possibly a rare exception, allo the news is positive. And believe me, that can be very hard tond today. While there is nothing wrong with getting the realnews on lie, a continuous barrage o bad news is depressing andso people begin to eel hopeless about the uture and that there isnothing that can be done.

Fortunately, our publications are just loaded with people andorganizations being very busy trying to solve at least some o theworlds problems and believe me, that is a good thing. Changealmost never occurs out o depression, but rather hope andinspiration. 800

Now that the risk o killing a rost is nally over, its likely thatthere will be a mad rush to the garden centers and the householdbudgets will again be in a perilous state. I you are ortunateenough to have a deer proo ence, the sky is the limit, i not, thenits wise to pick as many deer proo items as possible.

Tere are a number o interesting plants and bushes that seemto be either very low on our white tailed riends dietary list, orhappily, o their list all together. For several years, despite theregular appearance o these beasties, I have grown the ollowingwith great success:Lavenders; Forsythia; bush and vine Honeysuckles; Epimedium

a low perennial with delightul pink, yellow or red delicateblooms, ollowed by heart shaped leaves that turn a beautiul deepred color as they mature; Deutzia, a shrub with delicate ragrant

blossoms and pale green leaves; Fox Gloves; Burning Bush; LadyMantle; Barberry; Caragana; Peonies; Hawthorns and assortedClematis. So ar the Wisteria has remained in tact however, nowthat it is trailing temptingly over the ence I am not sure o itsuture.

No matter how rm I am in my resolve to abide by the DontFeed the Deer, concept, the act remains that i we garden at allwe are providing ood or them ... anyway, there are plants thatare simply too beautiul to pass up and there is protection orthem. Its wise to keep these purchases within reasonable boundsnamely the numbers that one can easily spray on a regular basis. My dentist recently suggested that since deer avoid the Narcissu

amily, (Daodils and the like), that a blend o the aded bloomswith a ew o the leaves might be a good base or the next miracle

repellant. I shall have a go, since it is time to cut the blossomsdown anyway, I shall mix in a little oil or beaten egg to help themixture adhere to the leaves and Hey Presto, we might just strikegold; enough perhaps to pay or a really ancy lling!!

While you are at it, cut down the entire blossom bearing stemsrom tulips and crocus, but compost them as they are the #1avorite ood. By taking o the spent blooms the plant then wilput all its energies into strengthening the bulb, instead o workinghard on producing a nice at seed pod. Te results will providemany more owers next year.

Happy gardening, even i it means scaling your diet to wienersand beans! 805
