In this year when many of the Gospel readings comefrom Saint Matthew, the Gospel for Ascension Day iswhat has traditionally been called The Great Commission - Jesus final instruction to his discipleswhich concludes the Gospel (Matthew 28: 16-20).As in Marks Gospel, Matthew depicts the disciplesmeeting the risen Jesus in Galilee, and he does not shy away from the fact that they had doubts. However, the words of Jesus are designed to give them strength, to outline a prothe future, and to give them comfort.

All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me.Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold , I am with you always, until the end of the age.

There are three parts to the instruction. First, the risen Jesus reassurabout his role. He is the center of Gods plan, the connection betweenand earth, given all power and authority. Its a similar statement to theheard from the Gospel of John two weeks ago: I am the way and the tthe life. No one comes to the Father except through me. It is becausewho He is that we take seriously the second part of the instruction, thedirections which are a commission not just to the eleven disciples prestime but to Christians of every time and place. We are to go, to reachpeople far and near; we are to baptize in the name of the Trinity (this isthe earliest example of the formula which we use to begin every Mafinally, baptism is to be followed by teaching, so that we deepunderstanding of the person of Jesus and begin to observe all thacommanded you. In other words, teaching leads to practice, embodiment of our faith in our lives. The third and concluding parcommission is a promise for the time beyond the Ascension. The bowill depart, and yet he will remain present with us always until the eage. We recognize that presence in the Church, our fellow Christianwords of Scripture and most especially in the Eucharist; but I think ver

you can also testify to a clear sense of the presence of Jesus in your livetimes and in bad.The Great Commission is the end of a Gospel, a kind of farewell incarnate Jesus, but it is also meant to be the beginning of faith in actiChristians. The fulfillment of these last words of Matthews Gospel canin the lives of missionaries who have gone to every corner of the earth and teach but we must all be missionaries in our way and realize that thfields can be very close to home. The places and people who need to Good News of the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord are everywhere

ASCENSION OF THE LORD June 5,Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

Men of Galilee, why are you standing there

    looking at the sky?This Jesus

who has been taken up from youinto heaven

will return in the same way as you have seen himgoing into heaven.

    Acts 1:11

People these days seem to be knocking on every door, looking for God or what they think is God. They look up at the sky, in their bank accounts, on the streets, online, in food, in drink, in shop-ping. We notice a movement of life, and we desperately hope it will connect us to God or where God just was. But in fact we areoften left with the same response: Oh, you just missed him.

The reality is that seeing Goddoesnt result from where we look but how we look. God is alwaysthere, dying to be noticed. We arethe ones who cant see. Seeing takes courage; it takes faithfulness. And it takes enormous love. Godshows up everywhere, sometimes(as Meister Eckhart says) clearing his throat, hoping to be noticed. So stop staring so hard with your eyes and start looking softly with

your heart. You may be surprisedat what you see. Or Who you see.
