UPCOMING EVENTS

The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ

Recently, we attended the wake of a dear friend who had suc-cumbed to cancer. She was in her early 70s, and had three grown children, all married. Over the years, the family had grown dis-tant; the siblings were leading their lives with problems of their own and had little contact with their mother. Yet at the wake, they seemed to come together, realizing that everything they were, all of their traits and values and loves and struggles, were given to them by their mother. In her death, they came to know that they were given the greatest gift, the gift of life. Today, we celebrate the feast of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. We are called to reflect and renew our faith in the saving nourishment of the Eucharist. At the Last Supper, Jesus broke the bread and poured the wine, instructing his disciples not only to eat and drink in his memory, but to do so with others who would believe. All that he was, he want-ed to give to the world. And as he foretold in the distribution of the loaves and fishes, each of us who receives him is to give him as well. The Catechism of the Catholic Church defines the Eucharist this way: "The Eucharist is a sacrifice of thanksgiving to the Father, a blessing by which the Church expresses her grati-tude to God for all his benefits, for all that he has accomplished through creation, redemp-tion, and sanctification. Eucharist means first of all 'thanksgiving'" (CCC 1360). As we approach the altar prepared to receive the body and blood of Christ, perhaps we would do well to remember the sacrifice he gave for us-his very life. In doing so, we realize that sense of thanksgiving that embodies the Eucharist.

SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION: Confirmation: The sacrament if Confirmation was celebrated on Thursday, October 19, with Bishop Peter Smith. Please keep the 2017 Confirmation Class in your prayers. ATTENTION: A special class is being formed for those high school students and adults who have not been Confirmed. Inter-ested in being part of the 2018 Confirmation Class? Please contact Holly Safranski or Pat Fellers. Reconciliation and First Eucharist: The journey that began last October concluded with the celebration of our First Eucharist Liturgy on Sunday, May 6, when 46 children from 42 families received Jesus in Holy Communion. Special thanks to Msgr. Tim Murphy who was our celebrant since Father Paul is visiting his family in India. For his homily, Msgr. Murphy gathered the children on the altar. We are very grateful for his encouraging words. Special thanks to all the parents who volunteered to be lectors, help with the music, and all the organizational pieces. At the end of the liturgy, the church was filled with song as the congregation sang, “New Hope.” It was clear that these chil-dren and their families are the hope of our future as together we proclaimed that Jesus is the Savior and hope of each one of us. Please keep the children and their families in your prayers. INFANT BAPTISM: Eight families attended the Baptism class after the 10:30 Mass this weekend. Please remember in prayer these families who prepare for the Baptism of their precious child. Our next scheduled class will be held in September.

Highlights of this year include all our activities with our Seniors: the Living Rosary, Christmas Party, Prayer-A-Thon, Stations of the Cross and Soup Supper, and our May 1st Crowning of Mary, followed by the rosary and Ice cream social. Special thanks to Youth Ministry families who helped with our trip to the Food Bank, who made soup for our Soup Supper, for attending all of our special prayer services. Special thanks to Susan Harrington for her leadership role and for supporting and helping with all the activities this year. This summer the leadership team will be working on the activities and schedule for the next school year. Registration forms for Youth Ministry will be available at the Parish Picnic in September.

Letting the Light In: Writing for the Growth of the Soul

Writers Retreat - November 9-11, 2018 In today’s world, film is the medium with the greatest impact; the internet is the most wide spread; but the written word has the greatest precision and permanence and can have enor-mous influence on our world. Today, writers of Christian con-viction need our support and encouragement. They need the vision to wrestle honestly with the complexities of the human condition and the skills to articulate those realities in ways that are crisp and imaginative. The 2018 Christian Writers Retreat is the second annual retreat of its kind at Tilikum and brings together a broad spectrum of Christian writers and speakers. The retreat provides expertise in relevant topics and offers one-on-one mentoring. This retreat is sponsored by: Barclay Press and Camp Tilikum. Lodge Housing and Commuters Tilikum has overnight housing for 30 guests to stay in the Lodge (usually 2 per room with a private bath). We also have room for 18 guests to com-mute. The registration page has two links, one for overnight and the other for commuters. The cost is $425 for overnight guests and $200 for commut-ers. Register at: www.camptilikum.org
