INTENTIONS AND PARISH EVENTS

A MESSAGE FROM FR. TRUC [Jesus] said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter said in reply, “The Christ of God” (Lk. 9).

Dear Parishioners and Visitors:

Welcome to our Eucharistic celebration and may you and your loved ones find solace in our church. This Sunday at the 12pm mass, we pause and thank members of the Finance Council and Pastoral Liturgy Council for their commitment in serving our church. Each member is unique and gifted in their participation of their times and talents.

Members of the Finance Council meet quarterly to review the actual income and expenses of our church and our school. They evaluate the budgets and compare the Profit and Loss reports to years past. They suggest and get involve in fundraising events, evaluate our investment accounts with the Archdiocese, and review any upcoming repairs or renovations in our church and schools.

Members of the Pastoral Liturgy Councils focuses on community building events, outreach programs, and liturgical celebrations such as Lent, Easter, Advent and Christmas. We meet every month except for August to take a break for summer. Their suggestions and recommendations have been tremendously helpful for me. Without their assistance in planning, their input, contributions and support, many of our church events would not have come to fruition.

Amoris Laetitia - A Summary of The Joy of Love by Pope Francis

Chapter eight: “Guiding, discerning and integrating weakness” (291-312) - Part 2

In a more general vein, the Pope makes an extremely important statement for understanding the orientation and meaning of the Exhortation: “If we consider the immense variety of concrete situations, … it is understandable that neither the Synod nor this Exhortation could be expected to provide a new set of general rules, canonical in nature and applicable to all cases.

What is needed is simply a renewed encouragement to undertake a responsible personal and pastoral discernment of particular cases, one which would recognize that, since ‘the degree of responsibility is not equal in all cases’, the consequences or effects of a rule need not necessarily always be the same” (AL 300). The Pope develops in depth the needs and characteristics of the journey of accompaniment and discernment necessary for profound dialogue between the faithful and their pastors.

For this purpose the Holy Father recalls the Church’s reflection on “mitigating factors and situations” regarding the attribution of responsibility and accountability for actions; and relying on St. Thomas Aquinas, he focuses on the relationship between rules and discernment by stating: “It is true that general rules set forth a good which can never be disregarded or neglected, but in their formulation they cannot provide absolutely for all particular situations. At the same time, it must be said that, precisely for that reason, what is part of a practical discernment in particular circumstances cannot be elevated to the level of a rule” (AL 304).

The last section of the chapter treats “The logic of pastoral mercy”. To avoid misunderstandings, Pope Francis strongly reiterates: “To show understanding in the face of exceptional situations never implies dimming the light of the fuller ideal, or proposing less than what Jesus offers to the human being. Today, more important than the pastoral care of failures is the pastoral effort to strengthen marriages and thus to prevent their breakdown” (AL 307).

The overall sense of the chapter and of the spirit that Pope Francis wishes to impart to the pastoral work of the Church is well summed up in the closing words: “I encourage the faithful who find themselves in complicated situations to speak confidently with their pastors or with other lay people whose lives are committed to the Lord. They may not always encounter in them a confirmation of their own ideas or desires, but they will surely receive some light to help them better understand their situation and discover a path to personal growth. I also encourage the Church’s pastors to listen to them with sensitivity and serenity, with a sincere desire to understand their plight and their point of view, in order to help them live better lives and to recognize their proper place in the Church.” (AL 312).

On the “logic of pastoral mercy”, Pope Francis emphasizes: “At times we find it hard to make room for God’s unconditional love in our pastoral activity. We put so many conditions on mercy that we empty it of its concrete meaning and real significance. That is the worst way of watering down the Gospel” (AL 311).

WORSHIP, LITURGY & FAITH

FOCUS ON THE MISSION "There are so many things to do." "We have so little time." How many variations of these statements have you heard or even said yourself? Actually neither statement is completely true. There are many things to do in this life, but really few things that are vitally important. Working, searching, conniving, and worrying our way to "gratify[ing] the desires of the flesh," as Paul relates in today's second reading, are really non-productive. So little time? When

we take on the freedom that Christ offers us, we have all the time we need in this world, and even more in the next. Elisha, the prophet Elijah's chosen servant, was slightly befuddled about what he should do. When Elijah called, he returned to bid farewell to his parents and provide food for his people. Only then did he follow. Jesus demands something different, something more of his disciples. He calls us to a

single-minded determination to drop everything and follow him. Now and not later. (c)JS Paluch Co.

May those who are in need of our prayers, place their trust and faith in the comfor ng presence of the Lord.

Please pray for our parishioners: Rosemarie Morgenstern, Marie Benedicto, Claire Shetz, Lorena Albarran, Jennifer Kelly Davern, Guadalupe Garcia, Dennis Mendoza, Kaitlyn Park, Shirley Fromburg, Cassie Miller, Sr. Anna Tom

Jubilee of Mercy: 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time Yet again in Ordinary Time, Jesus seems to demand extraordinary commitment. A would-be disciple enthusiastically volunteers to follow Jesus "wherever" (Luke 9:57). Jesus replies that "wherever" means "nowhere to rest his head" (9:58). To other candidates, Jesus brusquely denies reasonable requests to fulfill family obligations (9:59, 61), declaring that discipleship demands total commitment--now! But Jesus also demands that we not judge how others respond. When James and John volunteered to "call down fire

from heaven" (9:54) to destroy an unwelcoming town, Jesus "turned and rebuked them"

(9:55). All violence of any kind is completely unacceptable among Jesus' disciples, a lesson this Jubilee Year of Mercy is teaching the Christian community once again. Paul's challenge to the Galatians and us reinforces Jesus' decisive command to James and John that they express their commitment to him through compassion for others. We must abandon the violence of "biting and devouring one another" (Galatians 5:15), choosing instead to "serve one another through love" (5:13) --Peter Scagnelli, (c) JSP Co., Inc.

Keeping Summer Prayerful

Summertime can certainly be a time of well-deserved rest and also a welcome change of scenery. While making plans for our families this summer, let’s not forget about prayer because a change in schedule once we hit summertime and an eagerness to “get away from it all” could cause us to lose touch with our spiritual needs. We don’t want to inadvertently let our prayer life go on vacation too! Summer is actually the best time to get in touch with our spiritual selves; to have some time of quiet and peace. Even if you’re away from home, you will find opportunities to find a quiet place to go to… the balcony of your hotel room, sitting by the riverside, the dock of the bay, by the beach. As the song “Sitting by the Riverside” goes: ”just sitting down by the riverside, spreading my arms to the open wide. Now I am free and the world's at my feet. I can close my eyes. Oh Love, keep me warm…please keep me calm, keep me pacified. Now I'm content and my life is complete. I can close my eyes.” So, add a quite time to each of your summer days. It is in this quite moments and silence that we find God and our true selves. Excerpted from catholicworldreport.com; Lyrics to “Sitting by the Riverside, the Kinks; Dynamic Catholic

Have a safe and blessed summer!
