FROM THE PASTOR

Life is Like World Cup Soccer

From mid-June until mid-July, how could we not talk about the World Cup, the international soccer tournament held once every four years? You don’t have to know much about soccer to enjoy the games, because the fans of the different countries always keep things interesting! But there are also good life lessons to be learned from these games. 1. No Pain, No Gain: Anybody who has played soccer at a high level can tell you that the games require a lot of energy and often the endurance of much pain. But if it were easy to win the tournament, the winners would receive no glory. The same is true in our daily lives as we journey to eternal life. It is not easy to think more about God and

others than ourselves. It is not easy to resist sin and to try to become more like Jesus. But the more we grow in God’s love, the more we will share in His heavenly joy. As St. Paul said, “I consider that the sufferings of this present time are as nothing compared with the glory to be revealed for us.” (Romans 8:18) 2. All Time Counts: It sometimes might seem to a casual fan that there is little action in a low-scoring game, that the ball just keeps going back and forth around the field with no progress being made. But the players can’t let their guard down at any time, or their opponents will have a chance to score. All of the players who look like they are wildly running around can be setting up for a goal at any time. In our daily lives we might also feel sometimes like little of importance is being done, like our lives are not making any real progress. But in fact, every moment of our lives is important for our hearts to become more like the heart of Jesus. Whether we are throwing out the garbage or helping a child with homework, whatever we do with love will have a great benefit not just for ourselves, but for many others. St. Terese of Liseaux once said that even the threading a needle, if done with love, can save souls! And those are the most important goals of our lives - to save our souls and the souls of others. 3. Perseverance: There is a danger that players may become completely demoralized, such as when, in the last minutes of a tied game with Iran, a Moroccan player accidentally scored a goal for the other team and his own team lost! There is also a danger of players getting overconfident after a great victory (such as when the Mexican team beat the World Champion German team!) But the players of all teams must persevere in their efforts until the end. We also experience lows and highs in our daily lives, which might completely discourage us or make us overconfident. When we feel very confident of our salvation, let us remember out sins, for which Jesus suffered terribly to pay the price. When we feel discouraged, let us remember the great mercy God has shown to us in Jesus. In other words, by keeping our eyes on Jesus, we will neither become too discouraged nor overconfident. “The one who perseveres to the end will be saved.” (Mt. 24:13) 4. Mutual Respect: It’s fun to see the rivalries of international competition, but it’s even better to see great sportsmanship, such as when the members of the winning and losing teams show respect to each other after the game is over. Despite the rivalries, many players see each other as members of a great sports family. And that is how it should be in the conflicts of our daily lives. God calls us to remember that He loves all people, even those who may not seem very loveable, even those who may have harmed us in some way. Jesus showed us a great example of mercy when, dying on the cross, He said, “Father, forgive them, they know not what they do.” (Luke 23:34) May we also work for reconciliation with those who have offended us, that we may help all people to get to heaven. And that leads to a big difference between the World Cup and our hopes for eternal life. Only one team can win the World Cup. But by God’s mercy, working through us, all people can join Him as one family in heaven. May that be for us our most important G-O-O-O-A-L!

SACRED HEART OF JESUS Whether statues or stained glass, the image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus can be found in churches all over the world. Jesus looks down, one hand extended out and another pointing to a heart wreathed in thorns and glowing with light. In the Sacred Heart, we see both the sorrow and the joy of the life

of Christ, who became one of us out of love. "Jesus knew and loved us each and all

during his life, his agony, and his Passion and gave himself up for each one of us ?

He has loved us all with a human heart" (CCC 478). In the Incarnation, God

becomes man. Jesus experienced the fullness of humanity, including its sufferings. June is the month of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. We remember all that Jesus endured for us.

We also remember why he endured it -- out of love.

Parish Office will be closed on Wednesday, July 4th,

in observance of Independence Day. Regular Office hours will
