Mass Intentions

Dear Brothers and Sisters, Three weeks ago a bus full of representatives from the Diocese of Youngstown drove out of the St. Anthony-All Saints parking lot headed to Detroit, Michigan. Priests, religious and lay people from the six parishes with Hispanic communities were on that bus to bring our experiences and information to the Regional Gathering of the V Encuentro. Sr. Karen, Cristina & Juan, Erika, Lizbeth, Fr. Tom Bishop, and myself represented St. Anthony-All Saints Parish at the gathering. We came together at Sacred Heart Seminary in Detroit for a weekend to have a time to pray, sing, dance, and participate in serious discussions about the state of Hispanic ministry in the Catholic Church. What is V Encuentro? It is a four-year process of reflection and action that invites all Catholics in the United States into an intense activity of evangelization, communion, and consultation. The V means it is the fifth time the U.S. Catholic Church has implemented the Encuentro process. The first Encuentro in 1972 led to the creation of the National Secretariat for Hispanic Affairs at the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. The theme of V Encuentro is Missionary Disciples: Witnesses of God’s Love. Encuentro is a journey for leaders in dioceses, parishes, and other Catholic organizations to have an encounter with Hispanic Catholics, especially those living on the margins, and young people. The purpose of the Encuentro is for the Church of the United States to discern ways to better respond to the Hispanic people in our community and to develop ways Hispanic Catholics can use their gifts and talents for the entire Church. At the gathering in Detroit, we celebrated Mass and prayed together. The faith is very alive with our Hispanic Catholic brothers and sisters. Music was playing throughout the process and it was incredibly vibrant and reverent. During our discussion, I listened to participants share their joys and concerns. Hispanic Catholic parents deeply wanting to pass on the faith to their children. They want to instill Catholic values in the family but find it difficult in today’s culture. Hispanic Catholics want to learn new ways and to have additional resources to evangelize. They want to be understood and accepted by non-Hispanic Catholics, parish leaders, and parishioners. Developing lay leaders and promoting vocations were very important to them. Some Hispanic Catholics are worried about their families being separated by immigration enforcement measures resulting in detention or deportation of loved ones. They want to promote pro-life activities and address social concerns. Drug abuse, suicide, abortion, and human trafficking are issues of concern for them. There was discussion for the need for stewardship and ministry formation. The next step on the Encuentro journey is for organizers to compile what was discussed and bring it to the US Bishops for the national Encuentro to be held in Dallas in September. I will be one of four delegates representing our diocese. May we pray for the Church to increase its work developing a culture of encounter with our Hispanic brothers and sisters. During this journey, may we all work together with joy as missionary disciples. Your brother in Christ, Fr. Tom

Our deepest sympathy & remember in your prayers Olga A. Moses & all the

deceased of our parish.

Welcoming God, receive from our hands the loved ones we return to you. We pray to the

Lord. Amen.

A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE—The question in today’s Gospel, “What will this child be?” concerns all parents. We spend years trying to influence and shape the answer, hoping our children will be “strong in spirit”, like the Baptist, and “blessing God” like Zachariah.

Hopefully you had a chance to view some of the posts on Facebook or online this week. Here’s some information from Share the Journey, the year long campaign established by the Vatican;

WHAT IS THE CATHOLIC CHURCH’S TEACHING ON REFUGEES? It is a core Catholic teaching that every human being is

created in the image of God and is therefore entitled to dignity and respect. The Catholic Church views assisting those in need as a fundamental Christian duty that is derived directly from the life of mercy of Christ, who himself was a migrant and a child of refugees. We as Christians are called to welcome our neighbors with the same love and compassion we would want ourselves to be shown in a time of persecution. We are also called to provide support and care for refugees overseas who remain in refugee camps and other tenuous situations.

WHAT IS THE CATHOLIC CHURCH’S ROLE IN SUPPORTING REFUGEES AROUND THE WORLD? The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’

Migration and Refugee Services (USCCB/MRS) seeks to fulfill the teachings of the Church in the arena of migration. USCCB/MRS is one of nine NGOs in the United States that resettles refugees and advocates for the refugee community. Through cooperation agreements with the federal government, USCCB/MRS works in coordination with partner agencies around the United States to welcome and ensure that the basic needs of each arriving refugee are adequately met. USCCB/MRS also engages in assessment trips to regions with large refugee populations.

A Moment of Grace: A Prayer for Refugees God of our Wandering Ancestors, long have we known that your heart is with the refugee: That you were born into time in a family of refugees fleeing violence in their homeland, who then gathered up their hungry child and fled into alien country. Their cry, your cry, resounds through the ages: “Will you let me in?”

Give us hearts that break open when our brothers and sisters turn to us with that same cry. Then surely all these things will follow: Ears will no longer turn deaf to their voices. Eyes will see a moment for grace instead of a threat. Tongues will not be silenced but will instead advocate, and hands will reach out working for peace in their homeland, working for justice in the lands where they seek safe haven. Lord, protect all refugees in their travels. May they find a friend in me and so make me worthy of the refuge I have found in you. Amen.

ST. ANTHONY/ALL SAINTS Highlights of the Pastoral Council Meeting of April 23, 2018

Tim Spitale welcomed two new members to Pastoral Council, from the Hispanic community, who are also part of the Consejo Council: Liz Cruz and Erika Contreras.

Discussion of the Agenda for the upcoming Commission Information Meeting Tim Spitale gave a brief update of the agenda that was prepared at the last Council meeting in March. Karen Hutnick prepared a list from the survey of contact information of those individuals who were slightly interested and highly interested. She divided it seven ways among each Council member and passed out copies. There was some discussion regarding whether the returned phone calls, from the interested people, should be directly to the Council member or to the Church. Fr. Tom stated that calls returned to the Church would be questioned by the office secretaries, involving staff or be sent to the parish answering system. Tim Spitale stated that it would be better to have calls returned directly to the Council member as this would also help to build a relationship with the parishioners. It was determined that Fr. Tom should personally send a general email to those who showed an interest in helping with a Commission, also stating that Council members will be contacting them. After the email is sent, personal phone calls will be made, and a notice regarding this will be put on social media and in the parish bulletin. A tentative Commission Information Meeting date was scheduled Tuesday, August 14 from 6:30 pm—8:30 pm. Personal phone calls made will include: An introduction from the Council member calling, a thank you to the person for taking part in the survey, state the specific interest the person chose in being involved in a certain group(s) from the survey results, invite the individual to a Commission Meeting (give exact day/time) where we will break down exactly what the Commissions are, what they entail and hopefully find a place for the person to be involved, thank them again and state that you will be in touch.

Report of Consejo Activities – Liz Cruz and Erika Contreras Liz Cruz and Erika Contreras stated that the Hispanic community plan on helping out and being involved in the celebration of our Feast Day on June 10. They discussed at their Consejo meeting what different foods they plan to offer on our Feast Day. This year instead of the Pilgrimage trip to the Windsor Shrine and going to a park in Ashtabula for a cookout, the Hispanic community plan to have an outdoor event with Mass at a pavilion at Atwood Park in June or July because it is closer, more will be able to attend and it would prevent the risk of the busses breaking down or being stopped. On Mother’s Day, May 13

th at Mass, they are planning to offer a rose and a piece of chocolate to each

mother. Fr. Ernesto originated a two year program for new leaders of the Hispanic community. Thirty people from the Hispanic community around Youngstown will be taking classes at Walsh University. Antonio Medena from Cleveland University will teach the classes.

Report from Fr. Tom Fr. Tom reported on our Feast Day June 10

th: Some permits need to be updated, Mike Sylvester is coordinating the

amount of food, volunteers will be needed, a priest from Padua, Italy will be bringing relics of St. Anthony and a video has been sent to us regarding the relics that will be put up on our website. The Quarter Auction fundraiser for our Mother Cabrini fund raised over $2,000 even though the attendance was down this year from last year. This year is the 75

th anniversary of the Diocese of Youngstown. A Mass to celebrate is being planned for Sunday, May 20 at 4 pm

at the Cathedral and a notice will be put in our bulletin. Parishioners are invited from all the parishes of the Diocese and someone from each parish is being asked to represent their parish with a banner. Fr. Tom has an upcoming Deanery meeting with area priests, and he showed us a chart he plans to address at that meeting of our Diocesan priests by age. We currently have 74 priests with 3 retiring, none will be ordained this year. Fr. Acker at St. Joseph Parish in Suffield is age 88, Fr. Paul is age 82, Fr. Kisch is age 81 and Fr. Zamary is age 81. Thirteen priests are over the age of 70, thirteen priests are between the ages of 65—69, twelve priests are between the ages of 60—64, seventeen priests are between the ages of 50—59, seven priests are in their 40’s, seven priests are in their 30’s and one priest is under the age of 30. Ken Varn added that he would like a summary of this list to be able to add to his Power Point presentation.

Additional business Tim Spitale stated that he is part of the Knights of Columbus based out of St. Mary/St. Benedict Parish. They are trying to get more involved with our parish. They continuously raise money to help support our Seminarians while they are in the Seminary. They are considered a Star Council, meaning an exceptional Council, who do many things and are talked about on the national level. Fr. Tom stated that Mary Lou Vega has had some health issues and has decided to take some time off from Council because she still helps out in the atriums for the children which tires her out and she also has difficulty driving at night time. Ken Varn suggested that we should once again begin looking to fill the positions of Council members we’ve recently lost. Fr. Tom agreed to contact some people from a list of names he has. Cristina Hernandez stated that she will be absent from the meetings in May and June as she will be on vacation.

Pastoral Council homework Tim Spitale stated that the homework assignment is to begin contacting the people from the list of ‘slightly and highly’ interested parishioners, after Fr. Tom has sent out the general email. Tim Spitale volunteered to take over Mary Lou Vega’s list of names and will contact them.
