Start Your Day With StoriesInternational storyteller and children’s author, Dr. Michael Lockett, will bring to life the power of stories in his keynote, Planting Seeds of Learning – One Story at a Time. He will demonstrate how to use stories to help improve students’ speaking, listening, vocabulary, reading comprehension and interaction with one another in the classroom. Plan to laugh and enjoy learning to tell stories. You will be inspired to use stories to boost learning motivation and promote literacy with students of all ages.

Embark on an Equity Journey With Cornelius MinorWe often say that "every kid belongs" and we value all learners, but in many classrooms, the outcomes tell a different story. Too often, school becomes a place where only certain kinds of students can succeed--the ones who sit still, engage socially, speak in front of a group, or write on-demand. What happens to the kids who are not these kinds of learners? What about students who produce knowledge actively or audibly or deliberately or in ways that are not deemed "normal?" In educational spaces, conversations about school-based equity are sometimes limited to superficial conversations on gender, race, or social class. In this session, Equity of Opportunity: The Methodologies of Teaching ALL Kids, we will push beyond the surface to co-construct classroom literacy experiences that fully embody our declared values of "every student." We will examine classroom discourse, teacher moves, opportunities for student practice, process, thinking strategies, and text types.

This session will be offered for both K-3 and 4-12 sections.

Take Note With Tanny McGregorStudents deserve to express themselves in a multitude of ways. Visual notetaking, or sketchnoting, is a versatile thinking tool that provides choice, boosts engagement, extends recall, and invites deeper comprehension. In this session, Thinking with Pen in Hand: Using Sketchnotes to Promote Comprehension and Focus, we will identify the research and then get practical. Learn how to get started as a sketchnoter, how to launch this practice with students, and see how teachers across grade levels and content areas have welcomed sketchnoting into their instructional repertoires...all with pen or stylus in hand!

This session will be offered for both K-3 and 4-12 sections.
