The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite, and He bends you with His might that His arrows may go swift and far. Let your bending in the archers hand be for gladness; For even as He loves the arrow that flies, so He loves also the bow that is stable(Khalil Gibran s The Prophet). Fathers and those who act as father-figures share in the creative power of God in a unique way. Whether it is teaching, mentoring, providing for, and especially leading their children in the ways of faith, the fathers presence and example is invaluable. As with St. Joseph, this foundation is usually formed in a hidden way. This foundation allows for their children to grow physically, emotionally, and spiritually, and all without counting the costs. My Brothers and Sisters,

I am pleased to announce that Corpus Christi has begun to offer limited public weekend Masses at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and 7:30 and 9:00 a.m. on Sunday in our Parish Hall. “Limited” refers to the number of people who can attend, the number of Masses offered, as well as protocol during Mass. Please understand that due to the mandatory safety measures we must follow, your experience at Mass will be somewhat different from what we were used to before the quarantine. This pandemic is still serious, so for your health and safety and that of your fellow parishioners, I ask that those who attend please practice social distancing and follow all the guidelines and safety measures given by the Diocese of Paterson, the CDC, and state and local authorities. Parishioners from at-risk groups as identified by CDC/NJ DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH; and people who currently test positive for COVID-19, or who do not feel well, and people who are their close contacts should remain at home. Click Here Please keep in mind that Bishop Serratelli has granted a dispensation from the obligation to attend Sunday/Holy Day of Obligation Masses for the time being. This means that you are not required to come to in-person Masses at this time. For those who are unable to attend or prefer to be at home, our live stream Mass will continue on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. and Sunday at 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. I thank our parish volunteers and staff who have been working very hard to establish a plan that does everything we reasonably can to make this a safe re-opening for those who are able to attend. This is the next step our parish is taking to bring us back to worshiping together in-person fully with an unrestricted celebration of the sacraments. Fr. Kevin

• At the Bishop’s request singing by the congregation is discouraged. The ordinary parts of The Mass (i.e. the Gloria, Sanctus, Lamb of God) will be recited.

• Donation baskets will not be passed during the Offertory. You will be able to place your weekly gift in a basket as you enter/exit the parish hall. We recommend that you consider modifying your giving and give online. See our website to donate electronically. It is an easy and safe way to make your recurring or one-time donation and at this time it helps us administratively.

• There will be no Sign of Peace.

• No food or drink will be permitted in church.

• The restrooms are available for emergency use only.

• No public gatherings or greetings are allowed before or after Mass. Please proceed directly to your car following Mass. Together we can make our worship space a safe and comfortable environment for one another. I know that this is a lot of information to digest. As we go through several Masses, we will refine our processes to make it easier on everyone. Please know that your safety is a priority for us!

We are praying for you and your family. Let us know if you have any questions or need anything.

Reflection ...

by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson

It came to us as quietly as a cat’s paws on carpet, and minus any warning. They called it “Corona,” and later more technically as “Covid-19.” Either way, we just called it “the virus.” It truly is “an invisible enemy,” both to our bodies and minds. Chief among our latter reactions has been fear. Despite our so-called “victories” through mitigation and masks, that fear lingers in many minds this summer. That is because of what it could do to ourselves and those we love.

In that light, I ask you, could there be any more appro-priate Gospel passage than the one we read and hear this weekend? True, there is a difference in time and meaning between the original setting and now. Our Lord wanted to take the fear out of the Apostles’ hearts as they faced their brand new task of preaching. That job would be very frightening for most people, but especially for uneducated fishermen who never had to do it. They knew that the very message Our Lord wanted them to convey might involve their own deaths if the listeners concluded it was blasphemous. They remembered that charge once being brought against their Master, who excelled at preaching.

Switch to the here and now, twenty plus centuries later, when Jesus addresses you and me as potential victims of this insidious virus. He tells us what to really fear: those who can kill the soul. We hear Him stress the point with a memorable figure: “So, with a Father who has the hairs of your head counted, do not be afraid!” (Emphasis added.)

Along with the comfort the Lord’s words bring comes a serious caution worth remembering. “Whoever denies Me before others, I will deny before My heavenly Father.” How would we ever deny Jesus in our ordinary lives? Consider the Catholic in a cocktail party conversation with a party goer who puts him/her on the spot with a question about abortion, and the weak Catholic answers, ”Well I’m personally against it, but I wouldn’t urge anyone to rethink their opin-ion.” In a very real way, that’s denying Christ. The same holds for the many other “hot button” issues where we know the Church takes an unpopular stance.

I take Our Lord’s words about denying someone “before My heavenly Father” as something that will happen on Judgment Day. That obviously outranks a virus on my fear index. Yes, covid has brought changes to our lives that we might not like. Testing can be trying. Masks may be maddening. But we have a powerful and loving God who is, in the confi-dence of Jeremiah whose words we hear today: “The Lord is with me like a mighty champion.” To that we can add a supportive quotation “There is no need to nervously pace the deck of the ship of life when the Great Pilot is at the wheel.” With such conviction our fear scurries away as quietly and quickly as the virus arrived. Good riddance to both.

Sunday, Jun 21, 2020TWELFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIMEThe true measure of loveHow do we know we’re loved? It’s more than a matter of hearingthe words or seeing them written in a card. Love has something todo with fidelity: showing up, being there, not leaving when thestampede is moving in the direction of the door. Love makessacrifices, shares times of want along with seasons of plenty.Love generously supports and honestly challenges. Love lets gowhen the time is right. On this Father’s Day, celebrate those whohave embraced the vocation to show a father’s love and helpedyou recognize your true worth.

TODAY'S READINGS: Jeremiah 20:10-13; Romans 5:12-15; Matthew10:26-33 (94). “So do not be afraid; you are worth more than manysparrows.”

Monday, Jun 22, 2020MEMORIAL OF PAULINUS OF NOLA, BISHOPSimplicity is next to GodlinessPaulinus of Nola had it all—a successful career and wealth thatenabled him to retire early—and then he didn’t. After his onlychild died as a baby, he and his wife started shedding their life ofleisure that sorrow must have rendered insensible. Today, as theworld changes dramatically, and our lives with it, we can relate.Paulinus eventually became a monk and celebrated Christianpoet. After his wife died, he was named bishop and ended upbeing friends with many future saints, including Augustine,Jerome, Ambrose, and Gregory the Great. With God’s help, youtoo can turn your own tragedies into triumph in Christ.

TODAY'S READINGS: 2 Kings 17:5-8, 13-15a, 18; Matthew 7:1-5 (371).“The measure with which you measure will be measured out toyou.”

Tuesday, Jun 23, 2020Essential work callsToday, designated International Widows’ Day by the UnitedNations, is a good day to remember all families that have lost aloved one due to coronavirus—especially families who are mostvulnerable, with children or a limited livelihood. As Pope BenedictXVI affirmed in his encyclical Deus Caritas Est, “love forwidows and orphans, prisoners, and the sick and needy of everykind is as essential” to the church “as the ministry of thesacraments and preaching of the gospel.” How can you beChrist’s hands and feet today, to help provide sustenance tohurting families and lessen their suffering?

TODAY'S READINGS: 2 Kings 19:9b-11, 14-21, 31-35a, 36; Matthew7:6, 12-14 (372). “Do to others whatever you would have them do toyou.”

Wednesday, Jun 24, 2020SOLEMNITY OF THE NATIVITY OF JOHN THE BAPTISTGive it awayJohn the Baptist is considered the opening act for Jesus, theforerunner and the one who prepared people to receive themessage of Jesus. A better spokesperson could not be found.John’s noble counsel that we share our extra coat and food withthose who need them holds true today, ever more in these

difficult times when we have learned the imperative need to carefor one another. Head to the closet—what can you give away?

TODAY'S READINGS: Isaiah 49:1-6; Acts 13:22-26; Luke 1:57-66, 80(587). “‘What, then, will this child be?’ For surely the hand of theLord was with him.”

Thursday, Jun 25, 2020Come quick, compassionThe COVID-19 pandemic leaves deep scars around the world. The words of today’s psalm are vividly true: “May yourcompassion quickly come to us, for we are brought very low.”The church teaches that God’s compassion is always at hand.Suffering can be excruciating, but God’s presence endures. Be acompassionate presence to someone who is hurting. The heartyou heal may end up being your own.

TODAY'S READINGS: 2 Kings 24:8-17; Matthew 7:21-29 (374).“Everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them willbe like a wise man who built his house on rock.”

Friday, Jun 26, 2020Make us cleanToday is International Day Against Drug Abuse and IllicitTrafficking. This year's theme of "Health for Justice. Justice forHealth" captures the complexity of the problem, including theneed for widespread accountability and equal access to treatment. As a society, we recognize "international days" as a way to raiseawareness about global problems and celebrate achievements. The bad news: Worldwide, 35 million people now suffer fromdrug disorders; the good news: Cooperation among nations isbecoming more coordinated and sustained. In April 2020, duringa month the church dedicated to the "drama of addiction," PopeFrancis prayed that “those suffering from addiction may beproperly helped and accompanied.” It is a prayer worthrepeating.

TODAY'S READINGS: 2 Kings 25:1-12; Matthew 8:1-4 (375). “Lord, ifyou wish, you can make me clean.”

Saturday, Jun 27, 2020MEMORIAL OF CYRIL OF ALEXANDRIA, BISHOP, DOCTOR OF THE CHURCHMellow sainthoodFifth-century Saint Cyril of Alexandria began his career asarchbishop with intolerant impulses, expelling Jews from the city. But with time he softened his views, and so is rememberedinstead for opposing the idea that Jesus’ humanity was a meredisguise. How compassionate Jesus is toward the centurion intoday’s gospel, how tenderly he touches the hand of Peter’smother-in-law. Surely he shows the best of being human, nothingis camouflage. In the process of maturing, how have your ownhard edges been softened and made compassionate?

TODAY'S READINGS: Lamentations 2:2, 10-14, 18-19; Matthew 8:5-17(376). “He took our infirmities and bore our diseases.”
