The purpose of these walks was multi-faceted: exercise and fellowship, but also to pray, and to cultivate an awareness of the particularities of our neighborhood and its needs. A beautiful idea, and while it took place it was met with affirmation. “I remember when you used to walk around our neighborhood.” A comment received by a member of our church who happened to run into a family who lives along one of our well-worn paths. Apparently, something relatively small and easily overlooked, was anything but small, and was very much not overlooked. Jesus moved about Judea and Galilee exclusively on foot. Primarily because a car or bicycle was not an option for him. But I think there was also an intentionality to his walking. It put people and their needs at eye level; it put people in need of hope, and the mercy he could provide within arm’s reach; it meant that Jesus’ feet were dirtied with the same dust and grime from the same well-worn life paths we walk. Walking can enable us to notice, see, recognize the lives to whom Jesus is sending us. We have become much depended upon our vehicles and efficient modes of transportation though I realize we need them to go the distances we need to travel day-in and day-out. But I wonder if they also provide us a comfortable barrier to having to see our neighbor. This summer I invite you, not only to join us Thursdays at 5pm to walk throughout our neighborhood around the church, but look for opportunities to engage in the life of your neighborhood. Get to know the names, see the faces, and listen to what the Spirit is doing in the lives of those who lay their heads mere feet from yours at night. It may transform not only your health and even your waistline, but it may transform your spiritual health as well. June 2019

About five years ago, for a season or two, a group of Presbyterians would gather on the front step of the church, Thursday evenings at 5pm to walk around the neighborhood. The purpose of these walks was multi-faceted: exercise and fellowship, but also to pray, and to cultivate an awareness of the particularities of our neighborhood and its needs. A beautiful idea, and while it took place it was met with affirmation. “I remember when you used to walk around our

neighborhood.” A comment received by a member

of our church who happened to run into a family

who lives along one of our well-worn paths.

Apparently, something relatively small and easily

overlooked, was anything but small, and was very

much not overlooked.

We have become much depended upon our vehicles and efficient modes of transportation – though I realize we need them to go the distances we need to travel day-in and day-out.

Mark your calendars and start planning to be a part of the fundraiser for Liz Hobbs. Liz is working to overcome health concerns and because she gives so much of herself to Wabash families, we want to help offset her medical bills. Join us at the Knights of Columbus Hall on August 24th from 4-7 pm, where we will invite the Wabash community to enjoy a pulled pork dinner and bid on an array of items, big and small. If you have an item suitable for auction or a home baked dessert (fresh peach pie anyone?), please contact event Chairperson, Carol Early at 260-571-2931.

Invite your friends and neighbors to join us on August 24th!

Benefitting the Access Youth Center

August 2019 Even though the last day of school has just arrived, your Mission Committee is already

planning for the next school year by participating in our annual backpack collection.

The Access Backpack Challenge is scheduled for July, but you can get a head start and

pick one up now! Because of the size of our church, we’ve been challenged to donate

35 backpacks, but if we can collect 50… even better! They need new, quality backpacks

in sizes to match all ages (Pre-K to High School). Your purchases may be dropped off at

the church office during morning hours, or bring them with you on Sunday. A table will be

set up in the Fellowship Hall, starting this month in June, where you can drop them off on

Sunday mornings. In July, there will be a blessing of the backpacks and then they will be

presented to the Access Youth Center for early August distribution.

Thank you for helping Wabash County students!

Arts Camp is an outreach program of

WPC Children’s Ministries. About half of our

campers are not from our church. Help us invite

kids from the community to explore different

forms of art, as well as dive deeper into their

relationship with God, by becoming an Arts

Patron! Visit the bulletin board in the Fellowship

Hall and choose a “Dot.”

Each Dot features an aspect of our program that

needs to be financed. Include the Dot and your

financial donation in the offering. And know that

you are making a difference in the lives of the

kids in our community!

Any kids who are moving up a class (from Nursery

to the Nest Room, or from the Nest Room to the

Elementary Room) will do so on Celebration

Sunday in September. This is the same Sunday

that students graduating out of our program

(those entering 5th grade) will be welcomed to

join the rest of the congregation on Sunday

mornings. We’ll give you more information as we

get closer.

CHILDREN’S & FAMILY MINISTRIES

Kari Bartkus Director of Children’s & Family Ministries Email: [email protected]

By Kari Bartkus

Parents, just a reminder that from June 9th

through September 1st, all Godly Play students

will meet in the Elementary Godly Play Room for

our Great, Green, Growing Sundays of Summer.

(Nursery kids will remain in the nursery.)

Our routine will look a bit different for summer.

Students will be split into groups for group-based

learning. One group will meet with our Bible

Study Leader and read through a Bible story

together and discuss it, while another group will

meet with our Spiritual Practices Leader and

learn about a specific way they can grow closer

to God. Then, we’ll switch groups and go through

the material again! This is a great way to have

one-on-one interaction with the kids over the

summer and really help them learn some of these

routines that are vital to our relationship with

God and our community.

Students will also be able to check out a

Take Home Bag for a week to learn even more at

home with you during the week. We’ll help your

student find a bag that interests them. We just

ask you to be involved as they work their way

through it. It’s so much fun to do it together as

a family!
