Principal’s Message It is with mixed emotions that I write this last newsletter article before I retire. It has been a wonderful journey working here at Prince Edward School. There have been many changes throughout the years however the heart of our school remains the same; a giving, caring, community place. The staff, students, families and volunteers that I have worked with throughout the seven years here have enriched my life and it has been a real privilege and honor to have worked side by side with them. It is often shared with me that guests to our school can feel the warmth, welcoming nature as soon as they enter our school. I will miss being part of such a special community that is there to celebrate with you but also there for support when you need it. Thank you to all the parents that are part of our PECSAC and Lunch Program, you provide valuable services to our school and give opportunities to our students they may never have had. To all the community programs in our school that prepare our children to eventually become students here, I applaud your work and patience with everyone including our very tiniest babies. To all the volunteers that keep our children feed through the Breakfast Program, thank you, thank you. Your generosity of time and food will have a long-lasting impact on our students! I wish to extend a warm welcome to your new principal, Mr. Kai Jacob and I know that he will love Prince Edward School as much as I do. Physical Education News
Physical Education / House League Review 2018
Another big well done and thank you to everyone who
made our House league a big success at Prince Edward
School. This year there were over 35 activities run by
staff and volunteers. We certainly are the envy of many
other schools with the opportunities offered to our
children beyond regular classroom time. Please take the
time to visit our House League Display at school and see
for yourself the range of activities which have been run
this year. Some of this year’s highlights would include:
• Over 40 students (Grade 3-5) at the Divisional Turkey Trot at Birds Hill Park
• We organized the Flag Football Tournaments (Grade 4-5) at the River East Football Field
• Our annual Winter Clubs, Curling Skating and Broomball were very well attended during the cold season.
• Lots of educational activities such as Board Game Club, Build It Club, Keep Calm and Read or Colour Clubs and numerous Craft Clubs
• Our Annual Juggling Club and their “La Bomba” performance
• Learning life skills in Nature and Gardening Club
• Participation in the annual Folk Dance Festival and other Dance Clubs.
• Participating in The Annual Winnipeg schools Cricket Festival
• Being part of the World Cup of Soccer Tournament at Anderson Park
Thanks to this year’s House Leaders, staff and students
who in the monthly meetings, activities and assemblies
led their Houses throughout.

Bike Rodeo Arrives at Prince Edward
A big thank you to Ms. Dalman and her team from MPI who ran a bike rodeo for all our students one-day last month. The students learned some of the basics of bike safety and cycling skills on a course set up on the playground. It was a wonderful day enjoyed by everyone. We hope to repeat this next year.
MPI – Bike Rodeo Thoughts

On May 2 we had MPI come to our school and teach us about bike safety. Here are some of our thoughts:

Samantha “I learned about the “2-V-1” rule for helmets.”
Michael “We learned to use arm signals.”
Eli “I need to stop at a stop sign.”
Bien “I need to stop for people.”
Landyn “We stop for cars, trains and people.”

Benicio and Abigail “We learned about checking the air in our tires.”

Thank you MPI for bringing the bike rodeo to Prince Edward! Yee-haw! What a lot of learning and fun we had!
Fossil Hunting in Stonewall!
The classrooms of Grade 4/5 and 3/4 recently had
an educational experience at the Stonewall Quarry
Park and Museum. A beautiful sunny day saw our
children explore the limestone quarry, learn about
the uses of limestone and ended the afternoon
with a fossil hunt as they collected limestone
samples.
The interactive museum and the classroom
component added to the day, and everyone came
back to school with a sense of achievement after
an enjoyable day.
Prince Edward Cricket Team Shines in the Rain Our school was well represented again this year as our team participated in the Annual Schools Cricket Festival at Assiniboine Park. Though the weather was so uncricket like with showers and clouds throughout the day, the students played very well against the other teams losing in a close semi final game. A big thank you to my coaches this year Mr. Fitt and Mr. Marion-Gerula for helping the team and to all the families who came to support on such a cold day.
Fort Gibraltar Field Trip Reflection
On June 5th Grades 3/4, 4/5 and 5 classes went on a field trip to Fort Gibraltar. Something new I learned about the fur trade was that the children had to pluck the guard hairs off the beaver pelts. They did this to make sure the furs could be turned into a top hat. I would like to know more about what some of the items in the shop cost in beaver pelts. The part I enjoyed most was the Blacksmith’s shop, because he made us a nail in a matter of “Fort Gibraltar seconds.” He told us information while making a barn hinge. He was also funny.
Based on what I know now, I would NOT have liked to live during this era, because everyone had to work and do hard labour. I enjoyed Fort Gibraltar! Reflection by: Lily Teeuwen

students! 2017-1018 was a busy year in Music, students
showed off their skills during: Assemblies, Volunteer Tea,
Environment Assembly where the Grade 5's debuted their
song, Take a Look, about being kind to Mother Earth, which
they co-wrote with the help of Duncan Cox, K-2 Christmas
Concert, Grades 3-5 Spring Musical, RETSD Outreach concert,
Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra Educational Concerts and
choir field trip to Kildonan Personal Care Home. What a
musical year!

The Grade 2s have been busy scientists as we explored Position and Motion in our latest Science unit. We experimented with friction and inclined planes, explored how wheel and axles work and discussed how objects can seem to be in different positions based on your perspective. To cap off our investigations, we designed and built cars out of recycled materials that could roll down a ramp.

PECSAC Year in Review
As we near the end of the school year, I wanted to take the time to update parents on PECSAC’s work over the course of
the past 10 months. Our priorities can be divided into two key areas: fundraising and events.
Fundraising. PECSAC has held many fundraisers over the year to help raise money for school activities and infrastructure. To date, our fundraising efforts have raised over $8,500. Money raised this year has helped fund many classroom field trips, events, and guest speakers. Fundraising is an integral part of ensuring that students can enjoy experiences in and out of the class, and with limited school budgets for activities and a small school, raising money is an important way to ensure our children have as many unique experiences that help enhance their education at the school.
The vast majority of the money raised in the 2017-18 school year will be going towards an outdoor mural that will be in place for Prince Edward School’s 100th anniversary. The mural artist was in the school in the winter working with students in all grades on the design and will be back in the school for two weeks in September working with children on painting the mural. We are very excited about this coming to fruition with everyone’s hard work.
Next year, we are setting our fundraising eyes on replacing the two basketball hoops at the front of the playground. At one point, these mighty nets stood almost 10 feet high, but because of wear and tear are becoming more and more parallel with the ground. We hope to have the nets in place by Spring 2019 and with your continued fundraising help, we hope to make it happen!
Events. In addition to in-school activities, the money raised by students through PECSAC has been used to fund a number of events this year, including the following:
► Christmas Shopping Day for students to purchase a gift for $1 to give to their parents/guardians and siblings. ► School Dance Party where students and their families came to enjoy an evening of dancing, although much more
dancing seemed to be done by children than parents. ► Summer BBQ where our school community was able to get outside and enjoy some food and fun (please note,
this is written prior to the BBQ and I hope the weather was good).
PECSAC 2018-19. For those of you who will have children in the school next year, I encourage you to consider joining
PECSAC in 2018-19. A call for members will go out in September, and positions will be selected at our Annual General
Meeting in October 2018. The commitment to PECSAC is typically a couple of hours a month and PECSAC’s work goes a
long way to enhancing our school community and children’s experiences. I have found being involved with PECSAC to be
highly rewarding and insightful, and I hope that you consider joining PECSAC next year.

PECSAC wishes her all the best in her retirement, and we know she will be back to see the raising of our mural that she
helped the committee organize this past year. She has been committed to giving our children the best possible
education and working with parents and staff to ensure it happens each and every day. Congratulations and enjoy!
Thank you to Katrina Epp. Also, we would like to thank Katrina Epp, who will be leaving PECSAC at the end of this year
as her son moves onto junior high. Katrina has been the secretary for the past few years, and has made sure to record
everything we say and commit ourselves to each meeting. She has done an excellent job and we thank her for her time.
For children who will be returning to Prince Edward in September 2018, PECSAC will be raising money by once
again selling the Show & Save Card and Coupon Book.
The Book now features over $400 in FREE STUFF (no purchase necessary) and has thousands in money saving
offers for purchases at numerous grocery stores, restaurants and businesses throughout the city and
surrounding areas. Also, Show & Save will be offering an app to accompany the books, so more savings will be
available at your fingertips.
By purchasing your Show & Save from us, you will be supporting Prince Edward School while at the same time
saving money on your day-to-day purchases.
