ORIENTEERING 2018 On a sunny Thursday 15th March Remuera Intermediate sent a team of 48 students to compete in the Central Zone Orienteering Competition which was held at Blockhouse Bay Reserve. The teams represented the school with effort and commitment and as a result came away with some excellent results. Particularly pleasing results were the 2nd placings achieved by the Year 7 Boys A team, the Year 8 Girls A team, the Year 8 Boys A team and the third placing by the Year 7 Girls team. As a result of these achievements we were able to send 24 students to compete at the Inter-Zone championships which were held at Reeves Farm in Patumahoe on the 15th May. Again, students put in excellent effort, running across often muddy ground. Due to their outstanding efforts the Year 8 Girls team and the Year 7 Boys team were rewarded with 3rd placings overall. In addition to this, Coen Anderson and Tegan Feringa, placed first on their courses. We would like to thank all of the parents who supported us in supervising and transporting the students to both events and look forward to another successful year in 2019.

NZ OPERA

Students from Year 7 classes were recently entertained by an excellent NZ Opera production - Opera in School’s Initiative of ‘The Elixir of Love’ featuring singers from the Dame Malvina Major Emerging Artists Programme. This 45 minute show condensed the highlights of the main opera in a hilarious and engaging way that was a perfect introduction to opera for students and teachers alike. 15 Year 8 RI Singers were incredibly fortunate to be invited to watch the dress rehearsal of the actual full show of NZ Opera’s ‘Elixir of Love’ starring Pene Pati (from Sol3 Mio fame) and his wife Amina, on Tuesday 29 May at the Aotea Centre. This was the first time these students had been to an opera and the show was so funny, poignant and entertaining they were riveted for the entire 3 hours with one student saying at the end “That was my first opera and now I love opera”

We would like to thank NZ Opera for their incredible work and opportunities they offered to our students

WILLIAM PIKE GOAT ISLAND TRIP

After an hour and a half on the bus which left RI at 8am, the William Pikelets arrive at the Goat Island Marine Reserve to begin their first WPCA trip of 2018. We enter the Discovery Center and sit ourselves facing a member of the staff from the Marine Reserve, who introduces us to new species of fish, such as the Goat Fish, Red Moki and Blue Cod through a slideshow presentation. After exploring the touch tanks and examining creatures underneath a microscope, the kids say their thanks to the Marine Reserve staff and head back to the bus for Ti Point for snorkelling. We ready ourselves in wetsuits and slip into the frigid waters after learning how to properly handle snorkelling wear. Several adults lead us through the water before leaving us free to snorkel around independently. Through the slight murkiness in the waters, we see schools of fish alongside clumps of seaweed! Before we know it, our time for snorkelling is up. Though we were reluctant to leave so soon, we manage to convince the adults to allow us to do whatever on the wharf. After many flips, cannonballs and splashes, we are told to get back into our mufti clothes of which we came in and to get ready to leave.

The William Pikelets arrange themselves on the bus with no fuss, all tired but happy with our day. The sound of chatter crescendos, likewise of the bus engine roaring to life.

SAMOAN LANGUAGE WEEK

This year RI celebrated Samoan Language Week by performing a full school Sasa. This saw classes practising all week under the expert tutelage of our Samoan Student Leaders. As you can see, the outcome was outstanding!

RI CYCLING CLUB HAPPENINGS

This term kicked off with a fun, very informative and interactive bike maintenance evening with Ben Marshall from Performance Bicycle Tuning (performancebicycletuning.com). Riders learnt how to clean their bikes, change a tyre, conduct a ‘roll out’ check and were reminded of various safety tips.

Ten of our riders competed in the Auckland Schools Cycling Points Race Series at Pukekohe Raceway on Sunday 6 May. This is a sprint race and we had some good results with Jonny Barclay placing 1st, Ben Stewart 4th and Richie Wood 6th in the U13 Boys race. As a team they are leading in the U13 boys category.

Five riders tackled wet and muddy conditions on 13 May at Hunua, to compete in Race 2 of the AKSS MTB XC Series. The 7.4km course loop was tough but it didn’t deter Alex Clark who came 1st in the 1.5 lap U13 Girls Race and Jonny Barclay who came 2nd in the 2 lap U13 Boys Race. Fantastic efforts from everyone given the toughest conditions.

EARLY TEXT NOTIFICATION

We have launched our early text notification message service. The aim of this service is to ensure the safety of all

our students and being able to notify parents of unexplained absences in a timely manner. We are aware many

parents are simply very busy people and forget to notify the school, and we believe this service will be beneficial to

all parents / caregivers. Should your mobile number change, please notify the school immediately so that we can

update our records accordingly.

ABSENCES

To report an absence please use the link on the school website homepage www.remint.school.nz OR

Telephone the school directly and leave a message on the absentee line indicating the room number, students

name, reason for absence and when expected back at school.

Please note parents must report their child’s absence from school before 9.00am. Please DO NOT email the

teachers directly regarding your child’s absence as they do not always get to check their emails first thing in the

morning. Instead notify us via the website, the App or by telephone 522-9890 option 1.

CHANGE OF DETAILS

Please update any changes in contact details or address via the link on the front page of our school website. This is

critical as we move towards more online communication and sharing of student records.

PARKING Please do not park in the school grounds when picking up your children. Parking is available on Ascot Ave or St Vincent Avenue. We have had complaints from the neighbours around our school regarding parents parking across their driveways when picking up students from school. Please do not park and wait across any driveways in the vicinity of the school. Also, please do not park and wait at Ascot Mercy Hospital Carpark to pick up your children.
