WKAR Earns Top Wins for News

WKAR was honored with multiple awards recently in the annual Michigan Associated Press Media Editors broadcast competition. The WKAR news team earned three first place and five second place awards at a ceremony held April 30 in East Lansing.

The news team swept two categories in the Radio II division, taking first and second place awards for Best Feature Story and Best Enterprise Reporting. WKAR-FM earned second place as Outstanding News Operation in 2016.

Sixteen broadcasters submitted 283 entries in the contest, which featured news, sports and weather reporting as well as features, documentaries and photography from 2016. Entries in the Radio II division were judged by broadcasters from Ohio Public Radio, Columbus, Ohio.

WKAR’s top wins were for “Lansing Cold Cases,” and “Michigan’s Close Encounter,” both by Kevin Lavery; and “High School Mock Election,” by Brooke Allen.

Also in April, WKAR earned a regional Edward R. Murrow Award for News Series for "Faces of Flint,” reported by WKAR staff and MSU journalism students.
