THE LAMPLIGHTER
One can’t help but notice all the front-page news stories as of late. Everywhere we turn another reporter writes an article putting forth information while at the same time providing little to no facts backing up said story. Every story is preceded with the words “an anonymous source,” and we receive every story as the gospel truth without any corroboration of any kind. As long as we see three words ˗ an anonymous source ˗ we swallow it hook, line and sinker and we believe unquestioningly. No facts required.
Between 1972 and 1976, Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein emerged as two of the most famous journalists in America and became forever identified as the reporters who broke the biggest story in American politics. Beginning with the investigation of a “third-rate burglary” of the Democratic National Committee headquarters in the Watergate complex, Woodward and Bernstein uncovered a system of political "dirty tricks" and crimes that eventually led to indictments of forty White House and administration officials, and ultimately to the resignation of President Richard Nixon.1
What happened in that case was the result of over four years of extensive investigative reporting, not about some statement made by someone somewhere and then written about as the gospel truth only to be backed up with three words “an anonymous source.” And once backed up with those three words we the public are in no way allowed to question the validity of any part of a story. After all, the reporters of today need not have actual facts to make a story ˗ just those three words
As faithful believers, we do not have this luxury. We cannot say God exists and expect the world to believe us. They don’t. When one speaks of God, the world around us cries out with a loud voice “PROVE IT!” Prove to us without a shadow of a doubt God exists! Prove to us without a shadow of a doubt Jesus is the son of God! Prove to us without a shadow of a doubt the Holy Spirit really does exist! Maybe if we say an anonymous source told us then the world would believe. Unlikely.
Believers look to something called faith, and faith is belief in something not seen but believed. Unfortunately, the faith community today has changed to the point that unless we see, touch, or hold tangible proof then it seems too good to believe ˗ so we don’t. When and why have we allowed ourselves to become like this? When did we start believing individuals over God? When did we begin putting more faith in the words of men than the words of God? When did God have to provide tangible proof of His existence. And yet men’s comments that have no facts to support them and no expectation of ever producing those facts are believed?
Now I hear many of you saying, “I don’t believe everything in the news today.” Maybe not, but what we’re hearing and seeing is a public adamantly discussing stories supported only by “an

“The Lord is my light and my salvation”
anonymous source.” Will we ever see and/or hear people passionately discussing God? When did hearsay become the norm for belief? When did “an anonymous source” serve as proof enough?
People have spent and continue to spend vast amounts of time and money attempting to convince us God does not exist. They even attempt to provide scientific proof, which always proves the opposite of what they intended to prove. Here’s an example of one of their attempts: it has been surmised that the crossing of the Red Sea only happened because of very low water levels which allowed the Israelites to pass over safely. If that was the case then this proves God’s existence because the entire Egyptian army was drowned attempting to follow, which means they were drowned in a mud hole. As I see it, if someone works so hard to convince me something does not exist then maybe it does. If you believe unquestioningly stories backed by only “an anonymous source,” and live your lives defending said stories never asking for proof ˗ this is your right. God only says, “Believe Me and Follow Me,” yet we demand proof before we fully open up to Him. Personally, I want to know who I’m following and believing, and it’s not some “anonymous source.”

Is Collecting Children’s Clothes Hi, this is Janine Stenson and I am starting a
clothing ministry for children at O.P. Earle similar to the Backpack Ministry. I am keeping a small inventory in my basement and the school nurse contacts me when there is a need. Even though the school year is soon coming to an end, they are in need of some new/slightly used clothing items.
They need sizes small and medium of Boy’s underwear socks and shorts. Girl’s underwear socks and shorts.
The biggest issue right now is smaller kids soiling their pants which then need to be changed out. Socks can get soiled too in the process.
Label boxes or bags “KIDS CLOSET” and place the donations
in the Fellowship Hall or the church office.
Thank you so much and God Bless! Janine Stenson, 828-482-0070

THE LAMPLIGHTER
I read a metaphor defining a Christian’s joy as the flag which is flown from the castle of the heart when the King is in residence there. I often hear “Smile Trudy” and must remind myself to do that. God doesn’t want us to be unhappy and no one has cause for a constant bad mood. Paul was one of the most persecuted men, but he was a man of song. While in prison he sang hymns of praise just as he did outside prison walls. He was forever praising his Savior.
Jesus was the most intensive, ministry-oriented person that ever lived, but he enjoyed life. Whatever your job is when you’re giving out to others, it costs and exhausts. You need play time. God has given us the gift of laughter, and we need to learn how to laugh. Laughter is a load lightener, an emotional recharger, and a love rebuilder. The book of Proverbs says “Being cheerful keeps you healthy.” Studies prove that when you laugh, it increases the number of T-cells, which raises your immunity level and which produces endorphins in your brain. Humor has beneficial effects!
Another helpful habit for your life is to keep daily time with God. Start out with just 10 minutes a day. Find a place where you can be by yourself: the car, your home, the backyard, or even your office. Choose a book of the Bible and read a chapter a day. Read it, think about what you’ve read, maybe write some things down. That’s a habit that will keep you spiritually renewed. This practice is what a group of us do in the Bible study Monday mornings and what a difference in moods when we leave. A Christian without a small group is an orphan. The Bible says to encourage one another daily. Getting together in a small group where you can share needs and problems, pray for each other, and develop friendships is so valuable.
Praise renews and rejuvenates. It builds up. You need the emotional release and recharging that can come from singing. Put on some Christian music and sing along. Watch how God restores your

soul! How different do you feel when you belt out an old hymn or a religious favorite?

May 4-7. Whether with prayers, cookies, to the placemats that the students made, or with donations to help cover the cost of the meals, for the (residents).
On our last cookie count we (our Kairos team), took in Approximately 3200 dozen cookies, everyone on the yard knew we were there, they were waiting for their Kairos "Jesus Cookies!" (even one resident skunk on the lower yard was waiting for a cookie). Honestly what a joy it was to see, lifes impacted and hearts changed for "The Lord".
Also, I would love to thank all the members of the Kairos Tyger River Team #25 for a wonderful time, There were 9 people from the Landrum area to participate. Also, Dan McFerrin who is one of our church members, I'm glad he joined me this time and what a blessing he was to these men! Thanks Dan!
My first time in Kairos was like; how is this going to work, being kinda scripted? The Lord, uses it! along with all the personal testimonies of each speaker, to reach and touch the life's of inmates/residents. Again, thank you all! With ALL Praise to God! — Chris Owens
I want to thank all my church family at Landrum UMC, and friends who supported us during the Kairos #25 Prison Ministry, at Tyger River Correctional Institution the week-end of

YOUTH MISSION IN CHESTER, SC Let’s remember the youth, leaders and all those
involved with this mission in our prayers.
Salkehatchie Send-off Sunday: June 4 (9 &11am) Mission Trip: Saturday-Saturday, June 10-17
Salkehatchie Reflection Sunday: June 25 (9 &11am)
There once was a little boy who had
a bad temper. His father gave him a
bag of nails and told him that every
time he lost his temper, he must
hammer a nail into the back of the
fence.
The first week the boy had driven 37
nails into the fence. Over the next few
weeks, as he learned to control his
anger, the number of nails hammered
in the fence gradually dwindled down.
He discovered it was easier to hold his
temper than to drive those nails into
the fence.
Finally the day came when the boy
didn’t lose his temper at all. He told
his father about it and the father
suggested that the boy now pull out
one nail for each day that he was able
to hold his temper. The days passed
and the young boy was finally able to
tell his father that all the nails were
gone.
The father took his son by the hand
and led him to the fence. He said,
“You have done well, my son, but look
at the holes in the fence. The fence
will never be the same. When you say
things in anger, they leave a scar just
like these holes in the fence. It won’t
matter how many times you say I’m
sorry, the wound is still there.”
The little boy then understood how
powerful his words could be.
June at LUMC that means Salkehatchie!
First of all a HUGE THANK YOU to the “Home Team”! All of you who worked so hard to put the Luau Dinner/Basket Auction together; all of you who made a basket for the auction and last but not least, All of You who bid on those wonderful prizes! Our way is paid and then some! God is leading us back to Chester. We look forward to the challenges that are in store for us. We will be staying at Bethel UMC in downtown Chester and working on two homes in the area. Some of us will learn new skills. Some of us will be challenged beyond what we thought we were capable of doing. We will all be blessed more than we ever thought possible!
June 4 at the 11am service will be our send off. We look forward to you worshiping with us and joining us in prayer for our mission.
—Love & Peace, Jody and your Salkehatchie Team (Adam, Martha, Cole, Isaac, Jaime, Lisa, James, Skyler, Bonnie, Mallory, Michael, Patrick, Marcus, Tatiana, John David, Kerns, Edward)
