Harriet Mackenzie writes: This recording wasinspired by my long-term working relationships withand respect for these composers. Contemporary musichas always interested me. It is exhilarating to receive ascore, often unseen by anyone else other than thecomposer. What is wanted? What is possible? Eachpiece a new discovery – a voyage into unchartedterritories. When one is able to collaborate directly withthe composer on a premiere it is a particularly heady mix. The five composers represented here are all nowbased in Britain, but there is a colourful tapestry ofdifferent ethnicities, cultures, interests and influencesbetween them. I feel so lucky and privileged to haveworked with each one of these composers with theirunique and powerful voices. My hope is that this diskwill bring more attention to their work. Each one ofthese works is a premiere recording, and I am thrilledthat the composers were all present for the sessions. Thenew-ness of these pieces is a wonderful addition to thelong-standing reputation and tradition of the ESO, anorchestra which has done so much to champion newand unknown British music for nearly forty years, including their associations with Tippett, McCabe, Mawand Joubert. Now, under the leadership of KennethWoods, I am proud that these works are part of thattradition.

French organ music from the period of Louis XIV to theRevolution has always held fascination for performersand listeners alike. The kaleidoscope of colours, therich and varied styles, and the sheer exuberance of themusic never fail to captivate. Yet, performance practiceof this music has never been fully understood.

David Ponsford has spent much of his career studyingthis repertoire, resulting in his book French OrganMusic in the Reign of Louis XIV (Cambridge UniversityPress, 2011). The present series of recordings on themost important historical organs in France, includingthe music of Guillaume-Gabriel Nivers, LouisCouperin, Nicolas-Antoine Lebègue, André Raison,Jacques Boyvin, François Couperin, Nicolas de Grigny,Louis Marchand, Louis-Nicolas Clérambault, up tocomposers of the Revolution such as Balbastre,Beauvarlet Charpentier and Lasceux, is therefore thefruit of many years of research by a seasonedperformer whose aim is to combine technical brilliancewith intellectual understanding, to bring the musicalive with authority and meaning.

VIOLIN CONCERTO NO.2 OP.26

‘If [a composer] has “something to say”, it can besaid only through his technique; he has no control over“inspiration”. The surest way of writing dull music isto sit down with one’s head full of “Beauty” or“Socialism” instead of crotchets and quavers’. Thisno-nonsense approach to his craft has served GordonCrosse well during his long career as a creative artist. Crosse was born in Bury, Lancashire on 1December 1937. He won a place at Oxford University, where he studied with Egon Wellesz and Bernard Rosebetween 1958 and 1963. In the spring of 1962, followingthe advice of Peter Maxwell Davies, he studied forthree months with Goffredo Petrassi in Rome. From1964 onwards he combined composition with variousteaching appointments at the Universities ofBirmingham, Essex and King’s College Cambridge. After growing disenchantment with his profession, hegave up composition altogether between 1990 and2007. The five works presented here all date from the1960s. It was a period of great success and acclaim – in1966 he was granted the Vaughan Williams Composerof the Year Award for his ‘outstanding contribution toBritish music’ and in the same year an article in TheTimes devoted to his output began with a quotereferring to him as ‘the most exciting composer to haveappeared in Britain since Richard Rodney Bennett’.

WAGNER PARSIFAL

HALLÉ • SIR MARK ELDER

Following their acclaimed previous Wagner operareleases, Hallé present the re-mastered recording oftheir 2013 Prom performance, recorded live at theRoyal Albert Hall.

“Working with his orchestra, the Hallé, Sir Mark Elderproduced an account of this miraculous score which, for a combination of passion and precision, surpassedany other that I have ever heard.”Michael Tanner, The Spectator, 31 August 2013

Wagner’s last opera, Parsifal, which the composerdeclared to be his “farewell to the world” has beendescribed as being in many ways the most “total” of allhis “total art works”. His spiritual swansong unfurlsas a slow-moving, ritualistic drama, and is arguablythe best-suited of all his operas to the style of concertstaging offered here.

Recorded live at the Royal Albert Hall, London at the2013 BBC Proms, featuring dramatic spatial placing ofoff-stage choruses and musicians.

Audio re-mastered by Hallé’s award winning engineerSteve Portnoi: the original multitrack recordings ofboth rehearsals and concert were edited to eliminateaudience noise whilst retaining the sense of place andthe staged nature of the performance. The editedmultitrack was then remixed to achieve a sound inkeeping with Hallé label releases.

Carl Jonas Love Almqvist (1793-1866) is one ofthe few yet current Swedish authors prior toStrindberg. Most of his writings he collected in theuniversal work Törnrosens Bok (The Book of the Thorn-rose), in which he wanted to unite ”picture, music andscript together, and mould into a single brand” andthus create a kind of Gesamtkunstwerk. He was also strictly speaking ”only” a talentedamateur, although he often claimed that deep down hewas primarily a musical person. Already during orshortly after his illustrious Värmland adventure 1823-24 – when he left Stockholm for living an idealizedpeasant life in the small village Köla – he produced twolarge note booklets, one for voices and one forkeyboard. Both wear the title Free Musical Fantasies, and they associate directly to his literary counterpart, originally called “Free Fantasies, which, considered as anentity, by Mr Hugo Löwenstierna sometimes calledTörnrosens Bok [The Book of the Thorn-rose].

Lennart Hedwall is a musically versatilegentleman who has been active as a composer, pianist, organist, conductor, pedagogue and musicologist. Hestudied with, among others, Olof Wibergh, GottfridBoon, Tor Mann, Sven-Erik Bäck and Karl-BirgerBlomdahl and in Darmstadt, Vienna and Paris. Hedwall has in addition published biographies ofHugo Alfvén, Wilhelm Peterson-Berger, Erik GustafGeijer, Oscar Byström and Carl Jonas Love Almqvist, books called Operetta and musicals, The SwedishSymphony and Swedish Music History. H discoveredAlmqvist's compositions in the early 1950s and hasbeen campaigning for at symposiums and concerts andon radio. In 1984, he won together with singer IwaSörensen a Grammy for a LP with works by Almqvist.

‘Dick Cathcart’ (1924-1993) should be a namefamiliar to all jazz enthusiasts as one of the greattrumpeters. In fact, this Retrospective survey of the 25finest of his wonderful 50s recordings is the first CD tobe devoted to this most under-rated of artists. With agroup of like-minded musicians from Ben Pollack’sPick-A-Rib Boys such as clarinettist Matty Matlock andtenor-man Eddie Miller, he made an enormous impactas “Pete Kelly’s Big Seven” – yet the general publicremained unaware that his was the sound of thefictitious Pete Kelly. One hearing of these tracks, aswell as other contemporary recordings and laterexamples with the Kings of Dixieland (plus thepersuasive advocacy of note-writer DigbyFairweather) will persuade anyone that here is some ofthe most thoroughly enjoyable, as well as brilliant,Dixieland jazz on record. The release happily joins a string of Retrospectives(now 15-strong!) spotlighting the trumpet masters ofjazz: Humphrey Lyttelton (RTS 4108), LouisArmstrong (RTR 4129), Bunny Berigan (RTR 4139), NatGonella (RTR 4146), Bix Beiderbecke (RTS 4154), BillyButterfield (RTR 4203), Bobby Hackett (RTR 4208), DonGoldie (RTR 4216), Red Nichols (RTS 4227), Henry RedAllen (RTS 4248), Muggsy Spanier (RTS 4254), WingyManone (RTS 4267), Harry Sweets Edison (RTS 4271),and Harry James (RTS 4281).

JUNE 2017 NEW RELEASERELEASE DATE: 2ND JUNE 2017

This year we celebrate the centenary of Sollie“Tex” Williams (1917-1985), the great Country star ofthe 40s (who actually hailed from Illinois), famous forhis fast-talking monologues. He was one of the top tenmost successful Country recording artists of thedecade. After first gaining prominence, and having anumber of hits, as vocalist with the Spade Cooleywestern swing band, he formed his own WesternCaravan and went on to achieve 24 Country chartsuccesses between 1946 and 1974. I Got Texas In MySoul makes a notable addition to Retrospective’sCountry list. Of the relatively few Tex Williams CDscurrently on the market, none cover his late-40s goldenperiod so comprehensively.

Tex had Capitol Records’ first-ever million-seller with Smoke, Smoke, Smoke That Cigarette!(ironically, he eventually died of lung cancer) andeight others of the genre that became his speciality areincluded (Life Gets Teejus, Don’t It? . . .). But with all hissongs delivered in laid-back style by his warm bass-baritone voice, it is easy to see why he was so popular. Sixof his recordings with Spade Cooley and his Orchestraare featured, all of them big hits such as the No.1smash Shame On You. In fact, all 19 of Tex’ Country Hitscharting at No.15 or above are featured, 13 of them TopFives (e.g. Dont Telephone, Don’t Telegraph, Tell AWoman . . .). The musical range is surprisingly wide, stretching as it does from the simple, chirpy CaliforniaPolka to the adventurous Stan Kenton number ArtistryIn Western Swing. And, as a special bonus track, there isTex’ 1960 cover version of possibly the biggest evercountry hit, He’ll Have To Go.

The three movements can be played together or anymovement can be played independently as a stand-alone work. To be performed along with dancers whenfeasible.I. Hummingbirds - imagine the musicians asplayful, capricious, virtuosic hummingbirds dartingaround a garden, whizzing across multifaceted, rapid-changing chord progressions in a bebop-like fasttempo.

II. Swans - majestically floating in a lake, as themorning sun gradually rises, are infused with BillEvans’ impressionist harmony and trademarkrhythmically independent, singing melodic lines.

III. Canaries - please envision active, jaunty and alertcanaries crisscrossing the perfumes of Charlie Parker’sYardbird Suite and Ornithology.

There are only seven dynamics used in this scorewhich often staggered and layered (niente, pp, p, mp,mf, f, ff) so that each “level” of volume has a clearmeaning and sound.
