We certainly want to thank our veterans and those who were dependents of military members for their service to our country. This holiday was created to specifically honor you but we want you to know that we appreciate you every day for your sacrifice on behalf of our country. Thanks, Vets! Can you believe that summer begins in just a few short weeks? Those with kids at home – or grandkids nearby – must know, as they see how excited they are about getting out of school. Remember when YOU were excited by the thoughts of long, lazy days by the pool or just chillin’ at home? Then reality set in and you got a J-O-B and a family and looked forward to the weekend. And DANCING! And that’s where WE fit in. We offer the best entertainment deal around with our monthly dances. You won’t find any other options that offer professional lessons, great food, and great dancing, all for less than the price of a movie ticket – or dinner at McDonalds! We had over 100 in attendance for our 1 st Saturday Dance in May. About 60 took part in David Headly’s fun West Coast Swing lesson. By the time the Rigby’s Jig Formation Team performed their wonderful Hustle routine at intermission, we had a pretty full house. Doug McRae’s music was right on the beat for great ballroom dancing, too. We’ll be back at Brookland on Saturday, June 3 for this month’s dance. Our guest Instructor and Deejay is Brian Westerlund from the Off and Dancing Studio in Ashland. Brian will be teaching an Intermediate Cha Cha lesson at 7:30 and will then provide a great playlist for the social dance that follows. We are also excited to announce that Chris and Karen Chelecki will be performing an exhibition for us at the intermission. Chris and Karen have performed around the world and in many great venues and we are excited that they are now part of our Chapter. This will be fun to see! We held our semiannual Potluck Supper prior to our 3 rd Saturday Dance at Deep Run on May 20. What a delicious meal we had! I am always so impressed by the culinary skills of our members and the variety of foods they bring to the table. It was a wonderful event, with tasty food and time to socialize and chat before taking to the dance floor for a terrific Quickstep lesson with Phyllis Harris. Phyllis introduced many of our dancers to this challenging, fun dance and had 50 odd dancers doing what appeared to be REAL Quickstep by the end of the class. She will return this month to review the steps she taught in May and will add some more fun moves so you can navigate the floor and enjoy this energetic dance. DJ Bill Irwin provided the beautiful dinner music during the Potluck and had another new playlist of great tunes for the dance. He will be back on June 17 to support Phyllis’ lesson and to provide you an evening of danceable music from today and yesterday’s best artists. It’s getting close to September and we are already in the planning process for this year’s celebration of National Ballroom Dance Week (NBDW). Most of the 150 USA Dance chapters around the country do something extra to promote ballroom during this period. We have been invited back to Regency Square for our 8 th Annual Ballroom Dance Exhibition on Saturday, September 16. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to show shoppers, friends, and families just what it is we do at our dances. If you would like to be a part of this year’s event, please send an email to Gabe Pascarella at mailto:[email protected] or give him a call at (804) 379-2810 to let him know of your interest. We are looking for couples to perform, singles seeking a partner to perform an exhibition, and dancers who would like to be a part of group dances like the waltz, cha-cha, swing or line dances such as the Cupid Shuffle. If you just want to come cheer our dancers on, that’s great, too! See you on the dance floor! Phil

Tri-Cities News by Ruth Wilbourne

Our May Black and White theme dance was a huge success. We had our greatest attendance in a long time. We had visitors from the Williamsburg, Tidewater and Richmond chapters as well as Steve and Jennifer Kirvan, the owners of 7 Cities Ballroom in Williamsburg. It is always a pleasure to welcome out-of-towners and we value their support . Most dancers got into the spirit of the dance by wearing some combination of black and white. Glen Lovelace taught an American style Tango lesson, starting with the basic Tango walk and progressed from there. Randy Goodfellow gave us some great music selections to dance to.

Board Members Dale Smith taught a Very Beginner Waltz/Rumba lesson to a family of five. It was a wonderful evening. ! !

" Glen’s American Tango lesson " Glen Lovelace returns on June 10th for a second American style Tango lesson and Mike Recant will be playing the music. Hope you will be there.

SAVE THE DATE: DECEMBER 9TH. The Chapter’s 20th Anniversary dance will be held at the Hopewell Moose Lodge. Plan on attending, it will be a big night of celebration. Details coming soon. Now to business! We really need some volunteers to serve on the Board of Directors. Isn’t there any member who will be willing to devote the time, once a month, to attend a Board Meeting? Board meetings usually last only one hour. Additional duties are to help set up the room for the second Saturday dances, the after-dance cleanup, and refreshments. Please see a current Board member, or email Ruth " DJ Randy Goodfellow " at [email protected] if you wish to help. We are asking for help with the August and October dances. If we can’t get some volunteers for those two months, it’s a possibility those dances will have to be cancelled. Even if you do not want to serve on the Board, we still need your help. We really do not want to have to cancel two dances, but when push comes to shove, that’s what will happen. Please volunteer to help.

Member of the Month by Shirlene Howard

Michele Smith

LOD: Hi, Michele. This will really be like a first meeting. Though I’ve seen you many times on the dance floor, we’ve never had a chance to talk. It will be exciting to get to know you, so let’s get started with the interview questions. LOD: Are you a native of Richmond? If not, where were you born and where have you lived besides our wonderful city? No, I am not a native of Richmond, but have lived here for 27 years, longer than any other location. I grew up in Terra Alta, a very small town in West Virginia. When I was young, our family lived in town, and you could walk to the park, food store and pharmacy, as all were within a block of our house. Later we moved to the outskirts of town, down on the farm where my grandma and grandpa had lived. I attended Shepherd College in Shepherdstown, WV, yet another small, but very quaint town. There was a summer stint that landed me in Ocean City, MD where I worked two jobs to earn money for college. Then one semester off found me in Bluefield, WV. I soon realized that finishing school was a priority. After I graduated from Shepherd, my sister told me about a job in Richmond and, well, here I am. LOD: Tell us about your family. Where do they live? I have a daughter who has just completed her first year of college. I’m very proud of her accomplishments and determination. My mother and most of my five siblings live in WV, while some of us live in VA. The family has grown over the years, so our annual family reunions provide some good ole’ fun and spirited competition, especially at corn hole.

LOD: If you could relive an event or time in your life, what would it be? There have been many wonderful, happy times in my life, time spent with people I loved dearly. I’d like to have time with my Grandma, who is deceased. There are so many things about her life I wish I’d asked her. My husband passed in 2014. We had many exciting, fun times that I’d love to experience again. LOD: Where do you work now, and what other careers have you pursued? Since I arrived in Richmond, I’ve worked for the same healthcare company as an Administrative Assistant, then as an Executive Assistant, but made a career change in December of 2015 and now provide assistance in Human Resources as an HR Coordinator. I am loving the challenges and growth that this new role has offered. LOD: When did you start dancing, and what motivated you to learn ballroom dancing? I suppose my first exposure to dance was in physical education class and at 4-H Camp when I learned how to square dance. Later, in college, I took a class in clogging, which I loved, and I bring out on occasion just for fun. For a while in my earlier years in Richmond, I ventured into the boot scootin’ world of Country line dancing and then East Coast Swing at a club downtown. I had no idea there was such a large community of social dancing until my friend, Karen, talked me into going to a lesson. After that I was hooked. LOD: What are your favorite dances and why are they your favorites? I love dancing and learning all of the dances, but my two favorites are the Waltz and Tango. Each one has its own unique music that pulls on different emotions. I enjoy gracefully (for the most part) moving through the Waltz. It’s just a beautiful dance. My new favorite is the West Coast Swing, which has been challenging as well as rewarding. LOD: Do you have dance goals you hope to accomplish? On what dance skills would you like to improve? I want to become a better follower. I haven't learned all of the leads and just when I think I'm moving in the right direction, I'm not. Part of my challenge in following is trying not to anticipate my dance partner. Everyone has been very gracious since I started dancing and will take the time to explain or walk through the move again. Dancing makes me happy - it's just that simple for me. I plan to be dancing a long time. I feel very lucky to have been so welcomed by the dance community. LOD: Tell us about the most unusual, interesting, perhaps embarrassing, dance experience you’ve ever had. I’ve had quite a few embarrassing moments while I’ve been learning to dance, but I still remember an experience at my first USA Dance. At that time I knew very little about ballroom

Page 9: June 2017 Line of DanceVol 31 Issue 6 - USA Dance …usadancerichmond.org/.../june-2017-line-of-dance.pdfJune 2017 Line of Dance Vol 31 Issue 6 News from the Richmond and Tri-Cities

dancing, except for East Coast Swing, and a gentleman approached and asked if I would like to dance a waltz. I had no idea how to waltz, but I wanted to dance so much, I said yes. About two or three steps into the dance I stepped on the poor guy’s foot, but he was very nice and guided me through how the dance worked. I managed to make it through the dance. There was another time with a free-standing lamp that tried to join in on a dance. LOD: What’s the best present you’ve ever received? I’m not sure this is what you meant by the question, but my answer would be - my daughter. Being a mother has been one of my greatest joys and challenges. You learn so much about yourself when you are a parent. It molds you into this person you never imagined. I’m stronger, wiser, and more resilient because of being a parent. I’m so very proud of my daughter. I think she’s made me a better person. LOD: What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done? Would you do it again? The craziest thing I ever did was let my neighbor talk me into rock climbing. I thought it would be easy for me, but halfway up I felt like I couldn’t go any farther. I had to reach the top before they would belay me down. So I pulled myself up and up and finally made it. Would I do it again? Maybe, under the right circumstances. LOD: What is an ideal weekend for you? What a great question. Well, my first thought is a weekend I don’t have any cleaning or obligations. I could sleep in if I wanted or take off for the weekend and go someplace new. I

could work on researching for a book I want to write about my family ancestry. LOD: Is there something about you most people would be surprised to learn? When I was in college, I worked at a nearby children’s home for girls and the CEO was a bicyclist. He had a fundraiser idea to raise money for the children's home, in which we would bike the C&O Canal from Cumberland, MD to Washington, D.C. I was part of the small group, which included some of the girls from the home, who made the first trek to check it out. It took four days to make the 185.5 mile journey. We rode over black snakes, endured rocky paths, and moaned about every sore muscle. I completed the long journey the following year with several other bike enthusiasts supporting the children’s home, and then again later after moving to Richmond. LOD: Michelle, you’ve had some really strenuous activities in your life. I had to look up the meaning of the word “belay”, as I’ve never rock climbed. I’ll bet some of our readers are going to want to ask you about that adventure. Thanks for letting us in on the story of your life. It’s been a really interesting read.

Raise Awareness About USA Dance Educate non-members attending chapter events about the benefits of membership as well as the mission of USA Dance and our chapter. Help members understand the big picture of USA Dance and how they contribute to our success.

USA Dance is a national service organization defined by the IRS as a charitable, educational organization much like other service clubs such as Rotary, Lions, Exchange, Kiwanis, etc. Their local clubs, like our chapters, receive governance and guidance from their National offices in order to render their services to their local community. Our national and chapter officials donate their services to further the mission of USA Dance to increase the quality and quantity of ballroom dance in the USA.

USA Dance members are GIVERS not TAKERS! They give in the form of sharing with others the joys and benefits of ballroom dancing. They are dedicated to the promotion of ballroom dancing and in providing a legacy to the youth of the country. While supporting DanceSport (competitive dancing), USA DANCE also works to increase the availability of social dance opportunities through the efforts of the many creative and dedicated chapter network volunteers.

Our chapter continues to support the Riverside dance program by providing volunteers to assist Phyllis Harris as both leaders and followers. The school ended the year with a Tea Dance on May 24th and these pictures show you how much they have learned!
