Unleashed and/or wandering animals pose a significant safety risk to stock grazing in the lease blocks around the airport and are subsequently a threat to flight safety.

The Westport Airport Authority wishes to remind the public that any wandering or unleashed animals (except those working animals under the control of Landcorp staff) found on airport property will be detained and subsequently collected by Animal Control. If an animal poses an immediate risk other measures may be applied as required. Similarly, any animal that is sighted being allowed to run inside airport property (with the owner present) also poses a threat to flight safety. Consequently, steps will be taken to ensure the animal is contained and owners reminded that under the Civil Aviation Act Section 51 it is an offence to trespass on airport property. Deliberate offences and failure to abide by requests to remain outside the airport boundary are liable for conviction and imprisonment. The Authority also wishes to remind the public that it is an offence under Civil Aviation Rule 19.355 to interfere with any of the barriers or protections in place on airport land, including barrier fencing and electric fence units. Offences will result in an infringement fee and/or conviction. The Authority has a primary duty to provide safe and secure passage for those utilising the airport services.  We appreciate your ongoing cooperation in these matters.

From June to August 2017, Statistics NZ will be out and about all over the country, checking 1.8 million addresses, to make sure they have a high quality address list ready for the census in March 2018.

Approximately 300 staff will be working on this project. They will be carrying Statistics NZ identification and wearing Statistics NZ branded jackets while they are working. Between the 12 June and 14 July 2017 Statistics New Zealand staff will be on the West Coast to make sure the address list they have developed is on track, and they will be checking addresses in our community.

News from Buller District Libraries

A number of years ago when Council introduced the Vision 2010 projects, one of the rural projects identified for the Seddon ward was the Lyric Theatre in Granity.

The Lyric Theatre is a prominent multi-purpose community building that houses various activities in the northern Buller area. A total of $80,000 was allocated to upgrade this facility. Work got underway quickly with this project and a lot of electrical work in particular was completed. However, the building was significantly damaged during Cyclone Ita in April 2014 – this included the roof being completely ripped off. After this event, the plan had to change, and significant earthquake strengthening to the building was now also a major priority. This project has been driven by passionate group of community volunteers who have also sought additional funding from various external organisations to enable work to proceed.Since April 2014, remaining Vision 2010 funding from Council was used for earthquake strengthening plans and implementation of this work to be carried out. The project of upgrading the theatre is not finished, however all of the funding from Council has now been expended. Council would like to congratulate those who have been involved in this wonderful project for all their hard work in securing their community asset for the future.

Drones, UAVs or model aircraft are fun and can also be a useful tool. However they are aircraft and users need to make themselves aware of the CAA rules around their use.

If you own a drone make sure you know the ‘part 101 ‘ rules. These can be found at www.caa.govt.nz/rpas – the list below are rule highlights but NOT a complete list –

· Fly the aircraft so it isn’t a hazard to other aircraft, property and people· Fly only in daylight· Ensure you are able to see the aircraft with your own eyes (not through binoculars,

monitor or smartphone) or have a second person with you as an observer· Have consent from the people you are flying over· Have consent from the owner of the land you are flying over· Have knowledge of airspace, especially restrictions applying in the area you want to fly· Fly no closer than 4kms from the Westport Aerodrome (or any other uncontrolled

aerodrome)· Give way to all manned aircraft· Never fly over or near wildfire or anywhere near electricity transmission pylons.· Fly your aircraft no higher than 120m (400ft) above ground level

This is NOT a complete list of rules and there are some exceptions for what’s known as a ‘shielded operation’ so for more information check out the CAA website and/or drop in and talk to or email Sonia at Buller District Council, [email protected]. The pleasure of flying a drone or model aircraft is available to anyone but we all just need to be smart about their use and responsibly apply the safety rules.
