Winnie-the-Pooh may have just been a beloved bear character in a favorite children’s book but the little bear had big thoughts that we can all learn from. Below are a few of Pooh’s quotes that we can apply to our daily lives.

By: Kathy May

This month, I want to share information with you about our newest project that is in the planning stage: our Creative Lifelong Learning Institute. You may be asking yourself….”what is that?” Well, it can probably best be explained by saying it is a school for those who never want to stop learning. Our goal is to create top quality educational opportunities, offered in a variety of subjects, by some of the best instructors out there. But….there will be no tests. The classes are for those who want to expand their knowledge for their own pleasure and interests. Some classes may be taught once a week over an entire semester, some may be taught once each week for four weeks or six weeks, and some may be one-time workshops. Subjects will include history, music, literature, art, and so much more!

In trying to get this started, we have made some preliminary decisions that I’ll share with you. Classes will be held at the Granville County Senior Center in Oxford. Our first class will be World War II: The European Theater taught by Mr. Billy Yeargin. The class will be taught for six weeks each Friday morning, beginning September 8th. Mr. Yeargin is a Granville County native who has taught World War II for many years, and will be including information about Granville County’s connection to the war (including Camp Butner).

Soon after the WWII course ends, we will begin a four-week Genealogy course taught by Mark Pace from the Richard Thornton Library. We are SO fortunate to be kicking off our new project with these two highly skilled instructors.

Do you know someone who would be great at teaching classes? If so, please share his/her information with me so I can make contact. Do you have a particular topic that you would like for us to present? We want to hear your thoughts!!

“Why should society feel responsible only for the education of children, and not for the education of all adults of every age?” Erich Fromm

CHECK OUT THESE UPCOMING PROGRAMSThe Granville County Senior Center in Oxford will offer two special classes in July. Check out these great

programs! The Granville County center began a Dementia Awareness Series in March. The series began with the basics of

Alzheimer’s and Dementia and ended in May with Dementia related behaviors. Due to the popular demand of this class, we are offering a fourth session in this series in July. On Tuesday, July 11 we will hold “Effective Communication Strategies.” Communication is more than just talking and listening – it’s also about sending and receiving messages through attitude, tone of voice, facial expressions and body language. As people with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias progress in their journey and the ability to use words is lost, families need new ways to connect. Join us to explore how communication takes place when someone has Alzheimer’s, learn to decode the verbal and behavioral messages delivered by someone with dementia, and identify strategies to help you connect and communicate at each stage of the disease.

This will be held from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and registration is required. You can register for this workshop by calling the senior center at (919)693-1930. The program is free and open to the public.

Also in July the Granville County center will begin a Chronic Disease Self- Management Program. This is a six-week program that covers (1) techniques to deal with problems such as frustration, fatique, pain and isolation (2) appropriate exercise for maintaining and improving strength, flexibility, and endurance (3) appropriate use of medications (4) communicating effectively with family, friends and health professionals (5) nutrition (6) decision making and (7) how to evaluate new treatments. Each participant will receive a copy of the companion book, Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions, 4th Edition and an audio relaxation CD. This workshop series will begin Wednesday, July 12 and run each Wednesday through August 16th. Sessions will run from 2:00 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. Space is limited and registration is required. Please call the senior center at (919)693-1930 to sign up.

Don’t miss out!

FREE BRIDGE LESSONS!Yes the lessons are FREE! Beginning Tuesday, June 6, Art Schwartz, a Director for over 23 years, will be

holding classes at the Granville County Senior Center in Oxford for individuals who have never played bridge or for the person who is playing now but really wants a firm foundation for improving your current bridge game. Mr. Schwartz has taught bridge for as long as he has been a Director and he will share his love of the game with you. He will be assisted by his daughter, Kimberly “Chip” Hughes, who is also a Director and his wife who is a Silver Life Master.

Participants will need to purchase a manual for $17.00 and you will want to invest some time reading and practicing what you learn. There will be some teaching, some playing and at times some homework. Lessons are 1-1 ½ hours, from 10:00 – 11:30 a.m. and the lesson schedule will be as follows:

*June 6 – Introduction to Bridge *June 13 – What Should You Play? *June 20 – How high should you bid? *June 27 – Wake up your defense and win Master Points *July 11 - Take out doubles and the four letter word (PASS) *July 18 – Notrump bids – playing without a net *July 25 – More offensive bidding including Gerber & Blackwood conventions *August 1- Preemptive bidding *August 8 – Godzilla hands where a partner must respond *August 15 – Kill that notrump contract *August 22 – Win playing no trump & a highlight of common notrump plays *August 29 – Three common finessesIt will benefit your understanding of the game to attend all the lessons. We are hoping you can prioritize this

time because playing bridge is good fun and good for your mind! At some point in your lessons you will probably want to join us for our weekly Tuesday ACBL duplicate bridge game at the Granville County center. These games are held every Tuesday at 12:30 p.m.

To register and order your manual please email Chip Hughes at [email protected] by May 15th. You can pick up and pay for your manual at the first lesson on June 6th. You don’t need a partner to learn the game but if there is someone you want to play bridge with in the future, these lessons will teach you both how to bid and also what your bid means to each other – the key to success in the game!

Please note! The time for the Tuesday ACBL Bridge game has moved to 12:30 p.m. from our previous 1:00 p.m. start time! If anyone needs a partner for the game on Tuesdays please email Chip Hughes at the email address above and she will find you a partner for any given Tuesday.

NIFTY 90’SThe date is set for our annual Nifty 90’s dinner!

Mark your calendars for Tuesday, July 18 beginning at 5:00 p.m. This will be held at the Granville County Senior Center in Oxford. Any Granville County resident 90 years of age and older is invited to attend. Eligible participants may bring one guest. There will be a charge of $8.00 for the guest. You must preregister for this event by Thursday, July 6th. Please call the Granville County Senior Center in Oxford at (919)693-1930 to register. If you know someone who is 90 or older who you would like to receive an invitation to this event, please call the center to give us their information. This is always a special program- don’t miss out!

MANY THANKS TO……The Granville County Senior Center in

Oxford would like to thank the family of Frances Ragland Jones for their generous donation to the center for an audio-visual system for the large classroom in her memory. Mrs. Jones was an active participant at the center before her death. This donation will help provide quality equipment for better presentations and programs in this large room.

The South Granville Senior Center in Creedmoor would like to thank the family of Alice Berry for their generous donation to the center in her memory. Mrs. Berry loved to play Rummikub and especially loved our weekly Bingo game. This donation will be used to purchase new Bingo game supplies and prizes.

SPECIAL SPEAKERS PLANNEDGranville County Senior Services tries very hard to keep our seniors informed and up-to-date

with the latest information on aging, community resources, health related information and other types of news that affects our participants. Check out these upcoming programs at your local centers.

The Granville County Senior Center in Oxford will hold two Lunch and Learn programs this month. Check out the following schedule:

*On Monday, June 19, Dr. Cynthia Robinson, General Surgeon with Maria Parham Surgical Associates and Maria Parham Vein Center, will present a program on Venous Disease. For many people, even a short walk can be quite painful. Problems with veins can cause aching or cramping pain, tiredness, restlessness, burning, throbbing, tingling, heaviness in legs and more. If you are suffering from leg discomfort, join us for this presentation. Refreshments will be provided by Maria Parham. You must preregister by calling the center at (919)693-1930.

*On Monday, June 26, Scott Buckel, DO, Orthopedic Surgeon with Maria Parham Orthopedics, will present a program on Shoulder Arthritis and Rotator Cuff Tears. As we age many of us may experience shoulder pain and limited motion of our shoulders. This may make simple daily tasks such as lifting our arms to comb our hair or even to reach up to a shelf. If you are suffering with any of these issues make plans to attend. Refreshments will provided by Maria Parham. You must preregister by calling the senior center at (919)693-1930.

The North Granville Senior Center in Stovall will hold a special program this month also. On Wednesday, June 21, Winfree Keranakis, Physical Therapist with Granville Vance Home Health Agency, will be at the center to talk to participants about “Fall Prevention.” Did you know that one in three older Americans falls every year? Falls are the leading cause of both fatal and nonfatal injuries for people aged 65 and older. Falls can result in hip fractures, broken bones, and head injuries. And even falls that don’t result in a major injury can cause an older adult to become fearful or depressed, making it difficult for them to stay active. Join us to learn more about how prevent falls in the home, safety tips and exercise tips to make you stronger. This program will begin at 11:30 a.m. Please call Phyllis Blackwell at (919)693-3383 to register or for more information.

Pictured are participants at the first nature walk held in April at Horton Grove Nature Preserve. Julie Brockman, Fitness Program Coordinator, coordinated this walk.
