2016-2017 to the Budget Passed

I would like to thank everyone who voted in support of our budget on Tuesday, May 17th. It passed with 159 Yes votes and 18 No votes. There were two Board seats open and incumbents, William Conner and Christopher Jay were re-elected.

This year we were fortunate that the GAP Elimination was restored to the District. This allowed us to stay under the tax levy cap. Two districts within our BOCES, unable to do this, had to have super majority votes. Both received enough votes. In the near future more schools may be forced to do the same in order to keep existing programs.

Again, thank you for your continued support and let’s hope the State sees and understands the importance of the public education systems and continues to financially support our future.

JCS Welcomes New Business Official

Meet Larry Ringer

Larry Ringer was previously a self-employed CPA in Glens Falls. He has worked with school districts for the past 35 years as an auditor and consultant. He has served on the NYSSCPA’s Public School Accounting Committee and has been a speaker at various seminars for the NYS Association of School Business Officials. He has also served as President of the Adirondack-Saratoga Red Cross along with State and National Committees of the America Red Cross. He is currently a member of the Glens Falls Rotary Club and has also served on the board of several nonprofit organizations including treasurer of the Glens Falls Family YMCA and a trustee with the Glens Falls Historical Association. He lives in Queensbury with his wife Suzanne and has two children; Elizabeth who is an elementary teacher at Weems Elementary School in Manassas, Virginia and Matthew who graduated in May from Buffalo State.

Principal’s Message This is the month that seems to be the busiest and yet it also seems to fly by quickly. June also brings warmer weather and sunny days. This can be an easy distraction to lose focus on school work. Please buckle down and make these last few weeks your strongest. You can do it!

K-3 Radical Readers Our K-3 students have been working extremely hard to meet their goal of reading 6,000 books. As a reward, our students will be having a radical dance! I am extremely proud of you all! A special thanks goes to the PTSA for a wonderful year filled with outstanding events for our students, staff, and families. Again, I want to thank our parents, families, and community for your support.

OLWEUS ANTI-BULLYING PROGRAM One Student Can Make a Difference! When the Olweus Anti-Bullying Program started three years ago, one student came to me and wanted to be a bigger part of this program. She wanted to make a difference. Her name is Nikole Tucker. Nikole is now a junior. She will tell you she isn’t afraid to share her story as an elementary child who felt she was bullied. She will tell you she was very shy and felt like students treated her differently even in her early grades. She was taller and bigger than most of the students in her class. She told me it started with students whispering and laughing at her during recess. Eventually things got worse, the teasing and name calling began. She said it would happen where no one could hear what they were saying to her. She couldn’t understand why they were treating her that way. She felt alienated and alone. She became depressed. She said she was afraid to tell anyone even her parents.

This is why she is so passionate about this cause and wants to spread the word.

Nikole is adamant about wanting everyone to get a consistent message where ever she goes. She has started a Facebook Group called Anti-Bully Group of Friendship. She says here anyone can share their stories. She has been a part of this group for three years now. She believes this group has helped empower people who have been bullied and it gives them hope and knowledge that they are not alone.

Nikole has also been helping with stenciling the Olweus Anti-Bullying rules on one of the walls here at school. She recently has put together an Anti-Bullying Rally here in our own town. I am very proud that Nikole is not afraid to make a difference for our school and community. Keep up the good work Nikole! You do make a difference!

Important Note from the School Nurse: Effective September 1, 2016, students entering grades seven and twelve in New York State (NYS) schools will be required to be fully vaccinated against meningococcal disease according to the recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP). The ACIP recommends that all adolescents receive a first dose of MenACWY vaccine at 11-12 years of age and a booster dose at age 16 years in order to boost their immunity during the years at which they are at greatest risk of meningococcal disease. If the first dose was administered on or after the sixteenth birthday, a booster dose is not necessary. (Information taken from the NYS Dept. of Health)

Junior High Travel Club Goes to Boston

The weather did not dampen the spirits of the 52 students and chaperones from Johnsburg and Long Lake Central schools as they traveled to and around Boston on May 5th __ May 8th. The trip was a great success with stops at the Boston Museum of Science, The Plimoth Plantation, USS Constitution, Quincy Market and the New England Aquarium. There were other venues as well!

A majority of the group thought staying at The Plymouth Sands Motel ranked high on the list of favorite activities. While there many of our students enjoyed the ocean views, sounds, and the beach. The tide was out which enabled them to swim, walk along the beach, and play some football.

Another favorite was the Boston Duck Tour. This is a land and water tour of many of Boston’s historical landmarks and areas. This tour is both very educational and entertaining.

Also, in the heart of Boston, at Quincy Market, the students got a taste of the city’s hustle and bustle as well as some of its ethnic foods. They really enjoyed the street performers and atmosphere there.

We’d also like to compliment the students on their behavior. Everywhere we went we received compliments on how well they behaved and the level of maturity they showed. It really was a pleasure taking this group to Boston.

On a final note we would like to thank the community and those who have continued to support this club with their donations and purchases over this school year and the many others that have passed. It is your continued support that enables our students here at JCS to have this wonderful experience. Thank you! John Hurley and Tracy Watson, Travel Club Advisors
