We understand that part of our role as bishops is to lead the church toward new behaviors, a new way of being and new forms and structures which allow a unity of our mission of "making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world" while allowing for differing expressions as a global church. Developing such new forms will require a concerted effort by all of us, and we your bishops commit ourselves to lead this effort…..We accept our role as spiritual leaders to lead the UMC in a "pause for prayer" - to step back from attempts at legislative solutions and to intentionally seek God's will for the futureA special Commission will be named by the Bishops from around the world to work out a plan for the future and bring it back possibly to a special called General Conference in 2018. Dear Worthington UMC Family, The busy month of May is almost past, and Memorial Day Weekend is almost here, with a full June ahead. General Conference 2016 has been adjourned, but the sorting out of all that happened there is still underway. It was a roller coaster of a ride on many

things, and as one of you with longtime history in the church has said to me, “It’s the same discussion we have had for 44 years. The Messenger, June 2016 - Worthington UMC

By Russ Line At 7:30 A.M. on April 23rd, 2016, eight members of the WUMC and one member of Maple Grove UMC left for a one-day adult mission trip to Camp Otterbein. Camp Otterbein is one of the United Methodist church camps. It is open all year round. The camp was very busy. We were there, two groups of church volunteers were there from the Centerville area, and a youth group was there for a weekend retreat. We met Scott Seese, the Camp Director, in the dining hall where he described a number of projects for us to work on. After everyone had a chance to get coffee or water, we split up into various groups and got started. We worked on the following projects during the day: We painted two coats of white paint on two sides of six doors and one side of one door. We replaced about 30’ of 2” X 6” boards on the top of the railing that ran around the deck in front of the dining hall / lodge. We tightened down two other boards on the same railing that were starting to warp. There was a new 9’ bridge running from the parking lot to the camp grounds. We finished installing the spindles on one side of the bridge. We built the railing on the other side of the bridge and installed more spindles. Where the bridge came across to the camp ground, we installed 4 18” pavers. Gravel had to be put next to the bridge so that these pavers slanted down to the ground. We installed a couple of bricks at the end of the pavers so that the gravel would stay in place. In the kitchen, we worked on 7 metal shelves. The bottom shelf was too close to the floor. They were unable to sweep under the shelves in an efficient manner. We moved the bottom shelves up by 3” – 4”. The camp is building 2 treehouses about ½ mile from the dining hall. The other group of volunteers had been working on them since Thursday. We sent one crew up to help in the afternoon. Their job was to put down some of the flooring for one of the treehouses. The other crew will most likely get the flooring on both of them, since they are staying through Sunday. Additional crews will be coming in to finish them. The camp provided a nice lunch for all the volunteers, and we returned about 5:30 P.M.

Pictured above are volunteers: Brad Arensberg, Andy Garnes, Frank Birinyi, Ken Evans, Russ Line, Jerry Knorr, Doug Scott, Mike Jones, and Jody Croley-Jones.

The Messenger, June 2016 - Worthington UMC

by Cathy Taylor April 30th was just another cool rainy Saturday night this Spring for many people, while 14 members and guests of WUMC brought the aroma of grilled hotdogs and thoughts of summer picnics to the 125 family members we had the privilege of serving at the YWCA Family Center. Our menu consisted of hotdogs, baked beans, apple sauce, and coleslaw with fresh grapes for dessert. Our “kid-friendly” meal was totally enjoyed by the many children as expressed by one little guy who said with a big smile as he patted his stomach, “I’m stuffed!” We were blessed to talk and laugh with the children and parents as we served second helpings and encouraged them to at least try the coleslaw! Their days at the center are stressful; we pray our short time with them brought some joy and the knowledge that people do care and hold them tightly in prayer. Please accept the heart-felt gratitude of the Outreach Committee for providing to our small group of servants the humbling privilege to be the hands and feet of Jesus Christ as we served our homeless neighbors at the Family Center. Your generous donations to Second Mile Giving provide the food we serve, and your prayers strengthen our will to serve and are an act of love for these children of God. The Outreach Committee will be in the final stages of preparation for our next meal at the YWCA Family Center on Saturday, June 25th as you read this Messenger. We invite All to join us; you need not be a member of Outreach to serve. We’re sure with the blessings of our WUMC family, this dinner will be a nourishing meal and enriching experience for the homeless families at the center.
