Message from the President Hi PSCC Members,

I am pleased that officers of the board, Digital Director Dave Patzwald, and Yvonne Shimek, Treasurer are willing to continue in their positions. I would like to recognize Bob Joiner for his support as Vice President this year. We have a nominating committee in place for the elections, thanks to Lynne Greenup, Mary Pease and Pedro Landers. Gena Reebs is willing to be nominated for Vice President. I am very thankful for a wonderful team of people working together that really makes PSCC an excellent club.

I am excited to see the Year End Awards Competition results and looking forward to the Year End Party on June 8, 2015.

Tips for Taking Better Still Life PhotosStill life photographs don’t require photographers to travel to exotic places — not even to venture outside the comfort of their homes. In fact, not even a studio is required. This is one branch of photography in which anybody can participate. No special equipment is needed. Attention to detail and preparation are, however, a must. 35 Things Photographers Do Wrong (and how to stop doing them) It’s impossible to learn the art of photography without making a few mistakes along the way, but if you find yourself do-ing the same things wrong every time you pick up your camera, it’s probably worth getting to the bottom of it.

“I’ve worked out of a series of no’s. No to exquisite light, no to apparent compositions, no to the seduction of poses or narrative. And all these no’s force me to the “yes.” I have a white background. I have the person I’m interested in and the thing that happens be-tween us.” – Richard Avedon

“One of the best investments of time you can make is to sit down and make your hands familiar with your camera. Sitting down and closing your eyes as you run your fingers over the buttons and identifying them until you can do it from routine and muscle memory, without conscious thought, will mean that when the action is happening and the moment is fleeting, your attention is given to composition and capturing that moment, not fighting to remember how to access continuous focus, highspeed burst mode, EV compensation, or focus points. It doesn’t take much - 20 minutes a day of intentional button-play for one week - and you’ll be much closer to getting the camera out of the way. without the camera.”- David duChemin

“It was the 50mm lens that taught me how to see, and I learned how to be a photographer with that lens. The lens doesn’t exaggerate or lie. Using it requires that you push all gim-micks and trickery aside. The lens has a quiet salt-of-the-earth voice that gently nudges you to look and then see. In a way, the 50mm is like a good friend; it keeps you grounded and teaches you to be a humble and unpretentious viewer of the world. Some lenses are loud, like an electric guitar (think 70-200mm), while others are honest and true, like the 50. So yes, I do still feel that way, and the 50mm will always play an important part in my craft.”– Chris Orwig
