Kirs ten Smi th

is a Lieutenant Colonel in the US Army, currently serving as the Military Deputy to the Science Director and the Program Man-

ager, Medical Countermeasure Test and Evaluation (MCM T&E) capability, US Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious

Diseases (USAMRIID), Fort Detrick, MD. She is responsible for assuring successful conduct of Good Laboratory Practice

(GLP) and other advanced development nonclinical studies in support of USAMRIID and DoD’s Ebola response and the over-

all Filovirus research and development mission.

A native of Washington, DC and the National Capital Region, Kirsten completed a B.S. in Chemistry in 1994 from the College

of William and Mary before moving to Camp Zama, Japan to work for the University of Maryland, University College. Kirsten

married her husband, Philip, then an active duty Army Captain, in 1995 and they remained at Camp Zama until 1997. They

departed Japan for the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, to pursue doctoral studies in Chemistry, earning their PhDs in

2002.

Kirsten initially entered military service in 2002 as a CPT through a direct commission into the Army Medical Department

(AMEDD). After completion of the AMEDD Officer Basic Course, Kirsten initial active duty assignment was to the Walter Reed

Army Institute of Research (WRAIR), Silver Spring, MD where she served as the Chief, Bioanalytical Chemistry, Division of

Experimental Therapeutics. In 2006, Kirsten was detailed to the Food and Drug Administration, Center for Drug Evaluation and

Research, where she served as a liaison officer and Pharmacology/Toxicology Reviewer in the Division of Special Pathogen

and Transplant products. In 2008, Kirsten transitioned to the US Army Medical Materiel Development Activity (USAMMDA),

where she served in successive positions as Chief, Regulatory Affairs and Operations, Division of Regulated Activities and

Compliance (2008-2011) and Director, Clinical Services Support Division (2011-2013). At USAMMDA, Kirsten led teams re-

sponsible for providing FDA regulatory guidance and oversight for Army, Navy, and DoD project teams developing medical

products for service members and the public. Kirsten transitioned to USAMRIID in June 2013.

Kirsten is also active in nonprofit groups in the local community. She has been coaching soccer in the Calverton Recreation

Council for the last 3 years, and is now the league President and Soccer Commissioner. She also serves as the Secretary of

the Fairland Boys Gymnastics Booster Club, which supports the competitive boys gymnastics team at the Fairland Sports

Complex.

Kirsten and Philip have been members of Transfiguration since 2002 when they moved to Silver Spring, and have 3 children,

Megan, Connor, and Liam. They attended the 8:00 service for the first several years, and Megan has the distinction of being

the first baby baptized at that service. Connor was also baptized at the 8:00, and the family finally switched to the 10:15 around

when Liam was born. Kirsten was confirmed in the Episcopal Church in 2009. Kirsten has taught Sunday School for the last 3

years and the family has also participated in hosting and supporting coffee hours and other church events.

THE CURSILLO MOVEMENT: WHAT IS IT?

Cursillo in Christianity is a movement within the church that, through a method of its own tries to, and

through God's grace manages to; enable the essential realities of the Christian to come to life in the

uniqueness, originality, and creativity of each person. In becoming aware of their potential and while

accepting their limitations they exercise their freedom by their conviction, strengthen their will with their

decision, to propitiate friendship in virtue of their constancy in both their personal and community life.

To all who do so much to make Transfigura-

tion Parish the special place it is. If anyone else has brought in something that the of-

fice doesn’t know about, THANK YOU!

From a member of our Transfiguration family...

Mother Meg, President and Members of the ECW, other Members of my church Family,

Thank you for honoring me as one of the initial recipients of the "Women of Grace Award" at Transfiguration Parish. I am truly humbled by this award and will continue to share my blessings, within and beyond the walls of Transfiguration, as God's Grace allows.

Your donation to the "Food for the Poor" ministry, in my name, is also appreciated, since I am sympathetic and committed to the cause of feeding the hungry.

Thanks again and May God richly bless each of you. Yours in Christ, Linnet Grant
