For some time Simon Gallup, assisted more recently by Ian Hollands, has been researching the lives of the twenty men whose surnames and first name initials were inscribed on the plaques unveiled in 1921, together with those of two others whose names are inscribed on separate plaques in St Mary’s Church. The Langham Parish Council has now agreed that, at a time when the hundredth anniversaries of the beginning of World War I and the ensuing campaigns are being marked, there should be a permanent and public record of the lives of those men who were associated with Langham and who gave those lives in the War. The record will take the form of a panel to be mounted in the vestibule of the Community Centre. The panel will bear, in lasting photo-printed form, the names and curriculum vitae of each of the recorded fallen, together with the appropriate regimental or corps badges. To ensure that the inscriptions are attractively but respectfully laid out, the display will be professionally designed. The Parish Council agrees that the project should be voluntarily funded by donations, as was the 1921 Memorial Gateway. The project will be officially launched at the Annual Parish Assembly on 17 June, when the public will be invited to contribute towards its estimated cost of £450. Any excess of monies raised over the actual cost will be given in equal parts to the Royal British Legion and Help for Heroes.

REMEMBERING THE GREAT WAR — THEN

The Langham Village Great War Memorial—the gateway at Langham School—was dedicated on Sunday 25 October 1921. A report in the Chelmsford Chronicle of 28 October is reproduced, left, while the event was captured by a photographer, above. In the picture, left to right, are the Revd Charles Ward, Rector of Langham 1914-46, Maj Gen Richard Mullens (of The Oaks), the Revd Arthur Ager, Baptist Minister, and the Revd Thomas Raffles, Rector of Langham 1887-1914.

REMEMBERING WORLD WAR I — NOW

Those who gathered outside Langham School in October 1921 could not have known (although some may have feared) that what they referred to as the Great War would be followed only eighteen years later by the second and more catastrophic conflict that we know as World War II, the Great War being officially designated “World War I” in 1944.

SCOOTER RALLY The Coasters’ Scooter Club (founded in 1961) is holding a Classic Motor Scooter rally at the Langham Community Centre over the weekend of 19-21 June. There will be live music, vintage clothing stalls, food vendors, recorded music with DJs, and scooter custom and classic car shows. The Rally is to raise funds for the East Anglian Children’s Hospices (EACH). There will naturally be an increase of motor traffic and people going to and from the event but the organisers will do their best to keep any disruption to the minimum. People from Boxted and Langham will of course be very welcome to join in the fun.

BOXTED WI Boxted WI’s May meeting was its AGM. Business was followed by an entertaining cheese and wine “Call my Bluff” evening. 2015 is the WI’s Centenary Year and Boxted will be represented at the Albert Hall celebratory meeting and at a Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace. In May members enjoyed a day visit to Woodbridge and Sutton Hoo, lunching at a local inn. There are several interesting activities planned for the year, apart from the regular monthly meetings. If you would like to join the girls of all ages, do go along to the next meeting (see the Parish Diary on page 4).

LANGHAM WI Members at the May meeting were treated to a demonstration, by the owner and a member of the staff of Perrywoods Nursery, of the art of planting hanging baskets. Their demonstration revealed their great skill in co-ordinating plants and colours in baskets and plots. At the meeting a report was given on a successful trip to the Bulmer Brickworks, where bricks and tiles are still made just as they have been for centuries. In June there will be visits to gardens—and cakes to make for St Helena Hospice. On 4 June Rona Hammond will attend the National Centenary meeting at the Albert Hall in the presence of The Queen. The Annual Meeting saw Alison Stacey re-elected President and Jean Newnham Secretary. Rona Hammond was elected Treasurer in succession to Isobel Dickie. In her report, the President thanked all members for their hard work in a busy year, with many visits, treats and lots of fun.

HOUSE GROUP An informal House Group, open to everyone, will have had its first meeting on 27 May at Pope’s Cottage, Ellis Road, Boxted. There will be further meetings, led by the Rector, at Pope’s Cottage on 10 June and 1 & 22 July. Starting at 8 pm and ending at 9.15, the House Group will have refreshments followed by Bible study and prayer.

BOXTED & LANGHAM DIRECTORY 2015-16

As noted last month, the 11th edition of the Boxted & Langham Directory will be issued later in the year. Will chairmen, secretaries or others interested please inform the Newsletter Editor (see front page) of any alterations in contact particulars that should be included in the 2015-16 Directory.

BOXTED HISTORY GROUP The often harrowing story of the flight of the East Prussian folk and their famous Trakehner horses was told by Paula Short in April to the members of the History Group. In the bitter winter of 1944-45, as the Red Army drove into East Prussia, millions of Germans attempted to flee westwards, leaving their possessions behind. Trapped with their owners were the private studs of the Trakehner horses which had been bred over centuries for the Prussian cavalry and which were of world renown. But the owners and breeders sought to escape with their horses by the one route left to them—over a frozen lagoon by the Baltic coast. Thousands of refugees and horses died from cold, starvation, falling through the ice or from air attack.

Only a few families and their emaciated animals reached comparative safety in a defeated Germany. But from these few horses, the breed was gradually re-established in Germany and the rest of the world.

DAFYDD LAMPARD The generosity of Boxted and Langham villagers and local businesses has enabled a very grateful Dafydd Lampard to raise £3,440 and so to embark on his climb of Mt Kilimanjaro in aid of Help for Heroes and in memory of his late father, Warwick.

LANGHAM PARISH ASSEMBLY

The Langham Annual Parish Assembly will be on 17 June at 7 pm in Langham Community Centre. A guest speaker will be Laura Chase, Planning Policy Manager of Colchester Borough Council, who will speak about the Borough’s Local Plan now in preparation (see the March & April issues of the Newsletter). Langham residents are cordially invited to attend.

BOXTED EVERGREEN CLUB The Evergreens are planning what promises to be an exciting expedition on 2 July. Travel will be by coach, first for lunch at the Thetford Garden Centre, and then on to the famous six-acre Gooderstone Water Gardens and Nature Trail near Swaffham, Norfolk. The coach will leave from Boxted Cross at 10 am and return there at about 6.45 pm. Non-members are most welcome. The coach fare is £12 (Evergreens £10) and the charge for entry to the gardens £5.50. Everyone will pay for their own lunch. For more information and to book your place on the outing, phone Linda Tralau on 272710.

LANGHAM PRIMARY SCHOOL Class 3 has had coaching in squash at Colchester Garrison and a team from the School has achieved a proud victory in a Key Stage 1 football tournament. Class 3 has broadened its learning of history in “Portals from the Past’s” workshop on the Ancient Egyptians, in which everyone dressed up. Year 6 are preparing for their SATS, while the rest of the school has started Sports Day practice. The School Summer Fete will be on 12 July.

JUNE DIARY

LANGHAM PARISH COUNCIL At the 13 May meeting, Elizabeth Schofield and Bill Durlacher were re-elected Chairman and Vice-chairman respectively. The areas of Parish Councillors’ individual responsibility remain unchanged: The Council was pleased to note that extensive patching and resurfacing of the local roads was taking place. The rerouting of footpaths at the former airfield had not yet come into effect. It will investigate the cost of replacing “Post Office Stores” with “Community Shop” on the Millennium finger posts at the Wick Road/Park Lane green and at the “Shepherd” crossroads.

BOXTED VILLAGE HALL LETTINGS OFFICER

The Village Hall will need a new voluntary Lettings Officer in October if it is to maintain its service to the community. The role is to take bookings from the public, maintain a diary and the relevant bookings page on the Hall website and issue and retain letting agreements. A basic degree of IT skill is needed for email. Hiring fees are passed to the Treasurer. Hirers collect and return the Hall keys to the Lettings Officer. If you would like to volunteer for this important post, please contact the Hall Secretary, Jenny Tadman on 273216.

THANK YOU Chris Elliot writes: “We would like to thank everyone in

Langham & beyond for the overwhelming support & help you have given us following the fire*. For all the cards and messages, offers of tea & bacon sandwiches, meals, clothes, practical help, gifts of money & even offers of accommodation, it is hard to express how touched & grateful we are for every single one & how much it has helped us to cope. The way back is not going to be easy but I know the continued support of the village will help us get there, so thank you all.

Chris & Paul Elliott, Alice, Grace & Samuel” * The Elliotts’ home in School Road, Langham, was severely damaged by fire in the evening of 24 April.

TEDDY BEARS’ PICNIC—RAISING FUNDS FOR THE CHURCHES’ WORK WITH YOUNG PEOPLE

On page 3 overleaf is advertised a fantastic Teddy Bears’ Picnic at St Peter’s Church on 28 June in aid of funds to support the two young people’s groups that meet on Friday evenings. “The Zone” is for ages 6 to 11 and meets from 5.30 to 7.00 pm; “The Edge” is for ages 11 upwards and meets from 7.30 to 9.15 pm. Everyone has a great time with games, crafts, discussions and a Bible-based Christian session. The groups go on outings, have games evenings and sometimes a weekend away. All young people from the age of 6 are welcome: if you are interested, contact Dominic, Linda, Rebecca or Lawrence Sheil on 273324.
