Cabinetry Design Through The Decades

Cabinet design as we know it today has evolved since the 1920s. Before that time, most kitchens were very utilitarian spaces, with a worktable, sink and stove unconnected by cabinets or countertops. Storage was minimal, with a few wall shelves and maybe a hutch of some sort. In the late 1800s, ideas for more efficient kitchens started to develop, and fully took hold in the years after WW1.

Cabinetry Design Through The Decades continued

Every era brings its own style – and many still inform today’s cabinetry style. Some, like Shaker, are timeless.

1920s – Hoosier Cabinets featured roll doors and plain drawer fronts.

1930s – Shaker/Arts & Crafts styles, with straight clean lines and a center panel. Some included glass panels.

1940s – Brightly painted cabinetry came into vogue, especially mint green and yellow.

1945-1950s – Steel was the hottest choice postwar, most were painted white; pastels came in toward 1960.

1960s – Contemporary wood styles with minimal ornamentation.

1970s – Dark cabinetry played off gold and avocado appliances, stains replaced painted. Embossed designs were introduced.

1980s – Flat panel wood cabinet doors with arched top rails became popular.

1990s – Raised panels with arches for added visual interest and upscale cabinetry befitting McMansion kitchens.

2000s – Light, neutral colors and maple cabinets. To-the-ceiling cabinetry more popular as more men began cooking.

Today – Simplified wood design without excess detail and a focus on horizontal lines in wood grain direction. Metal kitch-en cabinets are also making a comeback.

As manufacturing techniques, technology and materials evolve, we’re sure to see a shift towards unique cabinet designs, high-tech appliances that talk to each other, and colors, textures and finishes that we’ve hardly dreamed possible!

For being one of the smallest rooms in your home, there is no shortage of design options for your bathroom. Before you get started on your bathroom update, here is a short list of bathroom design trends to consider when bringing your bathroom into the 21st century.

Floating vanity cabinets: If you are looking for a spa like feel, floating vanity cabinets make your bathroom feel larger and more spacious. Wall-mounted vanity cabinets allow for as much as 12 inches of floor clearance.

Minimalist design: Understated fixtures and undermount sinks are popular with homeowners looking for clean lines. Purging of unnecessary bathroom items and being able to keep countertops clear is key for a minimalist design.

Open shelving: Besides allowing easy access to your favorite bath products and towels, open shelving is a great way to display decorative items.

Accessory and laundry storage: Instead of cramming all your beauty products under the sink, consider pull-out organizers and appliance pull-outs, available in both Canyon Creek’s Cornerstone and Millennia cabinet lines. Don’t let your clothes hamper occupy space when it can be hidden inside a cabinet!

These are just a few of the many ways to give your bathroom a modern look and feel–it’s all about figuring out what will work best for you.

The Benefits Of Frameless CabinetsFrameless cabinets create a sleek and classy look in the home. First originating in Europe, they soon became a popular style for homeowners in America.

With the face frame being eliminated, shelving is more easily adjustable, doors fit tightly together, and drawers are bigger because they don’t need to accommodate the overlap of the frame. While cabinets wider than 36” will usually have a vertical center divider, or mullion, frameless cabinets make any area more useable with their full-access design.

Millennia and Katana are the two frameless lines offered by Canyon Creek. A variety of wood colors, species, and door styles are available in both lines.

Millennia features additional materials–such as HG Foils, Exotic Wood Veneers and metals–and plenty of custom options to make the most of your space.

Minimalist kitchens often highlight quality over quantity. Focusing on simple and clean, the countertop choice plays a big part in this type of kitchen design. To help you achieve this style, here are a few countertop materials to choose from:

Butcher block. Having a butcher block as your kitchen countertop is both beautiful and functional. Being able to chop produce on the counter is certainly efficient, and the wood surface adds a pleasing organic element.

Stainless steel. The choice of professional chefs and restaurants, stain-less steel is non-porous, so it’s much easier to keep clean than other surfaces that may stain or trap bacteria.

Concrete. This versatile material can be stained and sculpted, have wood grain, marbelized or pebble-like surfaces, and may even feature custom edge details. Recycled materials and water-based finishes can make concrete more eco-friendly than other choices, too.

How To Create Time-Saving Kitchen ZonesCreating zones in your kitchen is a great way to maximize the space in your custom cabinets and is a good place to start when rethinking your kitchen design. Not only will it make all of your daily activities a little bit easier, but it will also help you get the most out of the tools you have on hand. Typical zones include:

Dishwasher zone. Everyday dishes, silverware, towels and soap should be set up near the dishwasher. That way when you are loading and unloading it you will minimize how far you will need to move.

Baking zone. Useful items to place in a baking zone include a mixer, a cookbook holder, various spices, flour, sugar, cooking oil, baking powder or soda, mixing bowls, measuring cups, cutting boards and aprons.

Coffee zone. Keep mugs, a coffee grinder, sugar and travel cups by the coffee maker–you will save a few extra minutes in the morning and help get your day off to a stress-free start.

Cold storage zone. Have a cabinet near the refrigerator for food storage items including Tupperware, plastic wrap, freezer bags and foil.

Cooking zone. Pots and pans, a chopping block, pot holders, cooking oils and spices should be located near your stove top and oven for easy access.
