June 2014 RRP $5
Corelunder, No.81, June 2014, 3
Our Corel Draw X7 launch can only be
described as a success. We nearly doubled our
normal May attendance, with a lot of interest
in this new update from Corel.
David Mutch gave an excellent presentation
highlighting many of the new features in this
version. I’d like to thank David on behalf of
us all as there is a lot of preparation that goes
into these presentations and David’s knowl-
edge of Corel Draw really helps the rest of us
have a better understanding of how to use
this software to its full potential.
The door prize of a new Draw X7 went to
Irene, who has been a member of our group
for many years, but her visit to the group this
night was the first meeting she had actually
attended. It was great to see Irene and her
brother at the meeting, and maybe with such
a nice win we’ll see Irene back again soon.
Sue Martin won the other prize of Painter 12.
As we all know, Sue is an accomplished
photographer and I suspect also has a keen
eye for art, so I’m sure she will put this soft-
ware to good use.
The July meeting is our AGM. It would be
nice to see some new people going onto the
committee. It is a fun thing to do and we
really could do with new input and ideas.
Fred is our main presenter for June. He is
going to show us the new features in Video
Studio Pro 7. For all you Video Studio fans,
the raffle prize for the night is also a full
version of the new Video Studio Pro 7. That
makes it worth coming for. The second half is
going to be more Corel Draw. So if you have
any questions bring them along as I’m sure
one of the members will have the answers.
It should be a great night. See you all there,

Picture 2: Get Started
CorelDRAW’s Welcome Screen has been
totally redesigned in the X7 suite. It places
all of the options that you may want to
access on the first screen you see.
After installation, the firsttime you open
CorelDRAW X7, you will see a link to a
short welcome video. See picture 1.
In all subsequent program launches, the Get
Started screen will appear. See picture 2.
Get Started has links for:
● New Document, see pictures 3 and
4;
●New from Template, see picture 5;
●Open Recent; and Open Other,
which opens the Windows Explorer
screen. Notice in picture 1, we have
hovered over the first item in the
Open Recent list. This caused a
thumbnail image of the file to be
displayed to the right.

The next item in the list is Workspace. This is
a very useful addition to the Welcome Screen.
See picture 6.
In all previous versions of CorelDRAW, you
either had to go into the Options Dialog
Screen to change workspaces; or, you had to
pre-set the program to ask what workspace
you wanted before it loaded. Corel has
created some new pre-designed workspaces
for X7.
They are:
●Light, which is ideal for new users;
●Classic and Default, which have been
redesigned, and are for more experi-
enced users.
They’ve also added 2 new advanced work-
spaces:
●(1) The Illustration workspace,
designed to help in the creation of
book covers, magazine ads, story-
boards, etc., and
●(2) the Page Layout workspace,
designed for multipage projects, like
booklets and newsletters.
●There is also the Other category,
which includes an Adobe Illustrator
workspace, and any custom work-
spaces that you may create.
Next on the list is the What’s New category.
See picture 7.
This is perhaps the most comprehensive
What’s New list we have ever seen in any
version of CorelDRAW. It has 42 subjects
arranged in 4 subcategories. The subcatego-
ries include:
●Get up and running easily;
●Work faster and more efficiently;
●Design with creativity and confidence;
●and Share and expand your experience.
The Need Help section replaces, and expands
upon, the learning tools section of the
welcome booklet, that was in previous
versions. See picture 8.
Need Help contains links to…training videos,
video hints, and project details from Corel-
DRAW experts on some of their projects. It
also contains a number of tips and tricks
presented in text format.
The Gallery contains some of the beautiful
artwork that’s been created by CorelDRAW
users worldwide. See picture 9.
This section keeps you posted on updates to
the program. See picture 10.
This is another new addition to the Welcome
Screen. See picture 11. It is an invitation to
join the online community of CorelDRAW
users, and provides a link to
CorelDRAW.com.

Thanks to performance gains achieved
through the addition of 64-bit architecture,
the updated creative library and the new
touch-friendly instant movie creator, Fast-
Flick™, X7 upholds VideoStudio's promise to
provide the fastest and easiest way to create a
broad range of professional quality videos,
regardless of editing proficiency.
"VideoStudio has built a reputation for inno-
vation by bringing users of all skill levels
cutting-edge tools like 4K support, motion
tracking, HTML5 authoring and a wide
variety of creative editing tools in one afford-
able package," said Greg Wood, Senior
Product Manager, Digital Media. "But first
and foremost, we strive to provide a program
that is fast and easy and that addresses the
growing enthusiasm for video in every walk
of life, from personal, to sports, to school, to
business, and the best way to ensure this is to
go straight to the source" added Wood.
"VideoStudio X7 was developed based on our
extensive customer research. The result - a
uniquely powerful, intuitive, fun and relevant
editor."
The enhancements and additions seen in
VideoStudio X7 originate from an in-depth
study. Corel researchers drew from a wide
base of VideoStudio users, learning that
performance, speed and even more easy-ed-
iting tools were the enhancements users most
wanted to see in X7. As a result, VideoStudio
introduces the following new features:
●New 64-Bit Architecture Brings
Dramatic Performance Gains
The new powerful 64-bit architecture
removes memory limitations, resulting
in dramatic performance gains in a
wide variety of scenarios. For example,
benchmark testing indicates, rendering
HD multitrack projects can be up to
200% faster and rendering 4K projects
can be up to 800% faster.
●New FastFlick Makes Creating and
Sharing Videos a Snap
Creating stylish movies and slide
shows is as easy as 1-2-3 with the new
FastFlick instant movie maker. Users
can launch the touch-friendly app inde-
pendently of VideoStudio to quickly
create their project of choice by simply
selecting a template, adding their
media, and sharing. Users can upload
their videos directly to Facebook,

oStudio.
●Updated Content Library Helps
Users Explore New Creative Possi-
bilities
VideoStudio X7 includes fresh new
templates, frames, and objects as well
as two new types of media, back-
grounds and color patterns, to give
videos a fresh and polished look.
And for special effects enthusiasts,
VideoStudio Ultimate X7 includes a
powerful, updated-to-64-bit collection
of advanced special effects with plug-
ins from proDAD, Boris Graffiti and
NewBlue, providing over $500 in
additional value. With 64-bit power,
effects run faster than ever before.
User experience was a top priority for Vide-
oStudio X7 development, resulting in more
efficient ways to make and share video
projects. Key usability enhancements include:
●Enhanced!Smarter and faster 4K:
The Smart Render option now works
with UltraHD files resulting in
rendering speeds are up to 200% faster
than with X6. Users with the latest
Intel chips can expect to see perform-
ance gains of 170-500% when
working with 4K.
●Enhanced!One-step online sharing:
VideoStudio X7 lets users share their
videos online in one simple step, no
need to leave the program. Users
simply select a social media property,
choose the settings and post.
●New!Favorite filters list: Like transi-
tions, filters can now be added to a My
Favorites list, saving users' time when
applying specific corrective filters or
special effect filters.
●Enhanced!Batch conversion custom
profiles: Custom profiles in Batch
Convert allows users to render
multiple projects or files at the same
time, exactly the way they want.
●New!Intuitive profile management
and customization: Custom profiles
are the ideal tool to streamline work-
flows while still achieving great results.
VideoStudio X7 makes it easy for users
to create and save custom profiles to
match the video properties for each of

their cameras. This ensures the best
results possible when rendering.
●Enhanced!Transitions for overlay
tracks: By popular request, VideoS-
tudio X7 includes a new transitions
category that makes it easier for users
to find transitions that work best with
their overlay tracks.

The next big thing in printing is sure to be 3D.A combination of 3D CAD software and printersreducing in price (Remember what we paid forthe first monochrome bubblejets?) will soon leadto industrial designers prototyping parts, archi-tects creating their own scale models of projectsand even hobbyists experimenting.
Systems currently in use include (in order ofquality and cost):
- FDM (Fused Dimension Modelling),where melted plastic filament is deposit-ed onto the growing model by the printhead.
- Stereolithography, where a container ofliquid resin is exposed to UV light , layerby layer and the model is lifted out of theresin.
- SLS (Selective Laser Sintering), wherelayers of fine powder on the print plat-form are fused by a laser and the finishedmodel is removed from a container of thepowder.
There are methods however:- LOM(Laminated Object Manufactur-
ing), where rolls of adhesive coated pa-per are cut by laser or knife andlaminated.
- Paper Machining. A process where or-dinary business A4 paper is used. Thiswill be the subject of this article.
In 2003 brothers Dr. Conor and Fintan MacCor-mac of Dunleer, Ireland developed this systemwhere;
1. A single sheet of paper is fed into theprinter.
2. It is cut by a tungsten tipped blade andareas to be removed cross hatched cut.
3. Drops of water based adhesive are placedon the object and to a lesser extent itssurrounds.
4. Another sheet is fed in.5. The sheets are fused together by pres-
sure.6. The second sheet is cut and glued and the
processes continues until the object isfinished
7. The solidified shape is manually separat-ed from the surrounding support paper.
The finalised objects, whilst not as strong asplastic or resin, have similar properties to woodand the cost per object is claimed to be around20 times cheaper than many competing systemsand the ongoing cost about one fifth of any other3D technology.
A white object costs about 0.41ᶜ per cm³ and afull colour one between 4ᶜ and 5ᶜ per cm³ to produce.
It is also possible to send 3D CAD files to theAustralian distributor “Digital Graphic Supplies”in Sydney and they will create your object withprice reflecting complexity and size. Examplesrange from $28 for a plain white architecturalmodel 40mm X 70mm X 20mm to $420 for afull colour figurine 120mm X 120mm X145mm.
As noted above full colour objects can be createdby the use of Mcor patented ink which pene-trates through the paper and can create over1,000,000 colours using a four colour CMYK
Corelunder, No.81, June 2014, 19
system with a dpi of 5760 on the X axis 1440 onthe Y and 508 on the Z.
Two printers are currently available:- The Mcor IRIS full colour unit which
retails for AU$62,450 fully installed.- The Mcor Matrix 300+ monochrome
unit. (contact resellerDGS3D 02 96837857 for price.)
Using Corel products to create and/or modifyprinting files
Although CorelDRAW Technical Suite X6 in-cludes includes Corel Designer which can inte-grate 3D views and models into technicalillustrations, it would be necessary to purchasethe XVL Studio 3D CAD add on package for rrp$4,999 plus the $999 for the Technical Suite or$499 for the Technical Pack for Graphics SuiteX6 (or X7).
With the introduction of 3D scanners which, whilst in their early stages of development andhaving a consequent “early adopters” price tag, their inevitable cost reduction, (along with theprinters) will eventually become cheaper andeasier for us all to enter this new and excitingcreative realm.
It will be interesting to see if Corel create 3Dsoftware aimed at the more general market.

Popcorn has spent more than a decade
tracking increasing spending by consumers on
technologies that allow them to stay at home
more, creating their own restaurants with
kitchen gadgetry and going to the movies in
their home theatres.
Research suggests a newer trend, in which
people are beginning to tap those home enter-
tainment resources remotely, using tablets and
smartphones, usually via cloud storage and
services such as the music subscription pioneer
Spotify and Pandora Radio, while keeping an
eye and an ear on what's happening at home.
A burgeoning array of hardware and software
not only allows them to track events remotely,
it also gives them the chance to turn appli-
ances on or off. It tends to lend these things
an element of character, as if they've suddenly
joined one's social network.
We at The Bleading Edge recently developed a
particularly intimate relationship with one of
our light switches, for instance. It isn't just any
light switch. This one was developed by
Belkin, which is carving out a distinct niche in
the territory of these quasi-social devices with
its WeMo product range.
Once installed, this switch hooks into your
wireless network, allowing you to control its
operation from anywhere in the world via an
internet connection. Installation is easy,
although it does require an active wire that
might not exist in older houses.
Once in place, you download an app (iOS or
Android) and basically follow the prompts.
We fitted ours out with one of the highly
economical LED lights from Melbourne
based Bright Green, which we highly recom-
mend. The sheer novelty of being able to
switch your light on and off remotely might
otherwise make it a drain on the power bill.
The Belkin light switch costs $70. A basic
switch - essentially a power plug to which you
can attach anything you want to control
remotely - is the cheapest entry point at $60.
That one is also available with a motion
detector ($120), and there is also a baby
monitor ($100).
There seems to be a trend that seems to be a slight twist
on the concepts of "cocooning" and "super-cocooning"
advanced by trend forecaster Faith Popcorn.
(faithpopcorn.com)
Corelunder, No.81, June 2014, 21
This month Belkin introduced a night-vision
WeMo net-cam ($130) and a wi-fi version at
$170. Like Belkin's other products, both can
be installed via your wi-fi router without
having to be hooked up to a computer, using
Belkin's free net-cam app.
Later this year Belkin is expected to launch
some LED light bulbs with the same remote
control capabilities.
The WeMo devices become particularly
enchanting when you enrol them in a web
service called If This Then That (iftt.com),
which allows users to develop "recipes"
(scripts) that allow you to set up "triggers"
that produce "actions" on an increasing range
of channels (applications or services).
You probably won't have to develop your
own recipes, because the user community is
churning them out at an impressive rate.
Belkin makes linking your device to IFTT
very simple.
Once you have done that, you can interact
with it via email or SMS. You can tweet it
and relate to it via Facebook, or log events
and information such as power usage via
Evernote, say, or Google Apps.
We found the combination of WeMo and
IFTT ever so slightly addictive.
Within minutes of discovering this electronic
sandbox, we had set up a recipe to turn the
light on by texting the message "#on" to the
IFTT number we added to our contact list.
We also signed up to the Weather Channel so
we could engage a recipe that turns the light
on every evening at sunset.
Once we obtain one of the new WeMo net-
cams, and a couple more switches, we expect
we will become a modern lord of ubiquity,
leaving home more often, in order to stay in
touch with what's happening there.
