To my painting friends,
We had a wonderful Sail Away. Beautiful weather, an amazing selection
of projects, great teachers, a fun banquet, time spent with friends – it
couldn’t be any better! Thanks so much to Carole and Bobbie for chairing
this year. And thanks to everyone who helped in various ways. I know
how much work it takes to get this event to happen. And it takes all of us
to make it happen. What a fabulous weekend for our Chapter members
and our friends. Think about chairing the Sail Away next year or helping in some other way.
And we have many painting opportunities yet to come: Lynne Andrews, our Kent Island and
Summer paint-ins and chapter meeting projects. Keep your eyes on the newsletter and website
to be sure you don’t miss anything.
One purpose of SDP and its Chapters is education. I certainly think we accomplish this. Deco-
rative Painting is constantly evolving. It seems like the more I learn, the more there is to
learn! I certainly appreciate all the opportunities our Chapter offers. And the fun I can have
with all of you.
So get your painting bags and come learn with us.
Happy Summer
Carolyn

Programs & Seminars Chapter Projects
We have had two great classes since the last newsle er: Kathy Myrick’s cute memory box project and Bev‐erly Cra y’s Zentangles cards. I heard that we had Susan Stamilio in a endance and I’m sorry I missed her. Special thanks to all who painted memory boxes. Kathy Anthony and the second in the series “Summer” Tole Fairies panel are up next at the June 21 chapter mee ng.
The deadline for first two fall chapter projects are due in August! September will bring Candy Mollica teach‐ing another Tole Fairies panel – Fall – hard to believe! The registra on form is in this newsle er and the deadline to sign up will be during the summer on August 5. The advance prep for the class is included on the registra on form based on informa on from the book. Remember you must have the book for the line drawing, paint list, and brush list. If you missed the order in January please see the registra on form for or‐dering informa on.
Boston Harbor will be taught by Elaine Smith in October. The registra on form is also in this newsle er. Please give it to Elaine at the June mee ng or mail it before the August 20 deadline.
Remaining projects for the year are:
September 6 – Tole Fairies Autumn October 18 – Boston Harbor November 8 – Bi ersweet Moon December 13 – Tole Fairies Winter
Kent Island and Summer Paint‐ins Thanks to Kathy Myrick for sharing her Mary Owen’s oil rouging technique with students at the May Kent Island Paint in. The deadline to register for Alice Dudley’s “Big, Bold and Beau ful” floral is the June 21th chapter mee ng. The class is scheduled for Saturday, July 19 at the Linthicum Library. Look for registra on informa on on the website.
Seminars The June 6‐8 Lynne Andrews seminar may be a thing of the past at the prin ng of this newsle er. She is a fun and popular teacher and we had a great turnout for her classes. Thanks to all who helped make the seminar a success.
I’m giving you the bad news first. I am very sorry to say that the Debbie Co on seminar has been canceled. It is becoming increasingly difficult for interna onal teachers to come to the US.
Now for the good news. We have signed contracts with the following teachers through 2016:
June 26‐28, 2015 – Janice Miller October 2‐4, 2015 – Cheri Rol (oils) June 3‐5, 2016 – Brenda Stewart September 23‐26, 2016 – Janelle Johnson (colored pencils)

Society of Decora ve Painters Na onal Conven on Report
Town and Country Resort in San Diego, CA.
May 12 – 17, 2014
By Debbie Reeder
There were a li le more than 400 pre‐registered a endees and over 600 by the end of the week. Declining membership con n‐ues to be an issue. I don’t think I saw more than 5 people under 55years old. SDP actually sells a pill container with the SDP logo so what does that tell you!
The trade show was very small with about 40 vendors but Candy Mollica and I did find a colored pencil ar st we had never met before and I brought home one of her step‐by‐step videos for the library. I got a chance to see Maxine Thomas and she wants me to spread the word that she is going on a mission trip for about 16 months and that she hasn’t died! She has a new Country Primi ves book and a new Tole Faires book coming out at HOOT in August.
Annual mee ng:
The most exci ng me of the annual mee ng for me is when they announce the new CDA’s and MDA’s. For the first me this year, colored pencils and pastels were accepted as mediums for cer fica on. Golda Rader received her CDA for her colored pen‐cil entry that was amazing. I love the enthusiasm and pure joy on the faces of the new cer fied teachers when their names are called. It makes me want to run right out to the cer fica on booth and get the design un l I remember that I would have to ac‐tually paint it!
Bylaw Amendments:
Mo on passed to allow board proposed amendments to be distributed by email 90 days prior to the annual mee ng. 15% of the membership have not supplied email addresses to SDP. I know several of our members do not have email and I vot‐ed against this mo on. It passed by a narrow margin.
A mo on was passed to require amendments origina ng outside of the board be submi ed by August (previously January). It was moved earlier in the year to allow for discussion by the board before publishing them in the January Decora ve Painter magazine as required.
There was a mo on concerning chapter authority that stated that chapter bylaws shall not authorize a chapter to expel a member. I guess some chapters have some unique personali es and the mo on did not pass mainly because of subjec‐ve wording. This was quite a confusing issue.
Couple of others were either not seconded or not passed.
Elec on of Officers:
President – Pat Marler
Vice President/President‐Elect – Wendy Watson
Past President – Donna Frost
Treasurer – Susan Herr
Chapters Gathering:
There are 249 chapters (down from 260 last year) and 128 received the 2013 Chapter Achievement Award by promo ng decora‐ve pain ng to the public. These awards were distributed and I’m proud that CBDP members worked so hard to get this award
again. I hope to have the patch sewn on the banner by the June mee ng. I par cipated in an 8x8” challenge with a Gail Anderson sunflower design and came home with a Patzcuaro Fish I’ll bring for show and tell at the June mee ng. Members a ending the gathering received a survey and I will share the results when I receive them.
Thank you all so much for sending me to sunny and HOT San Diego and for worrying about me being there during the recent fires. I had a great me and good classes. It was a beau ful loca on, we had a chance to see the Rose Show the day before the conven on started, and found a lovely waiter, Miguel, who knew what we wanted to drink without asking by the me we le !

President Carolyn Troy called the mee ng to order at 10:14 AM at the North County Library. Carolyn welcomed Beverly Cra y’s guest, Susan Stamillio. Secretary’s Report – Bobbie Draves read the minutes from the April 5th general mee ng. The minutes were approved as read. Treasurer’s Report – Robin gave the treasurer’s report. The ending balance in the checking account was $5,032.94 and the savings account had $7,201.30, which included eight cents interest, for a total of $12,234.24. The bulk of the receipts were for the Lynne Andrews seminar and surfaces. Most of the expenses were from Sail Away and deposits on planned 2015 and 2016 seminars (Janice Miller, Brenda Stewart, Cheri Rol, and Janelle Johnson). Membership – Carol Burns provided the membership report – for 2014, we have 96 members. Leslie Cates, from La Plata, MD, is our newest member. Debbie Reeder sent thanks for the get‐well cards. She said her voice is ge ng stronger a er having the injec on into her vocal chord. Linda Brandt’s hus‐band Mike is doing well at home a er his heart a ack. Beth Weiss is having some difficulty a er her arrhythmic heart is‐sue. Elaine Smith had sent out a request for a HOOT room‐mate, but she said it’s too late and she’d not going to HOOT now. Jean and Henry Hilleary will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on June 21st. Happy Anniversary! Jeni Bearce asked for prayers for her oldest daughter Jeana who had a stroke. She’s s ll having balance problems. Kathy Anthony said her Mom is home and doing well a er her heart a ack last week. Kathy pointed out that ignoring the symptoms of a heart a ack for two days is not a good idea. Carol announced that the Naval Academy Garden Club will hold its annual flower show May 14 and 15, which is a Wednesday and Thursday. She brought flyers for anyone in‐terested. Seminars – Carolyn reported on seminars for Debbie Reeder, who is on her way to San Diego for the SDP conven on. The Lynne Andrews seminar (June 6‐8) will be at the Center at Glen Burnie, and be held in the former Hallmark store which is at the Target end of the mall. If you enter the mall from that side, the Hallmark store, with red doors, will be on your right next to the Lane Bryant store. The Hallmark store is good be‐cause it has doors that can shut out the noise from the mall. The space is huge. Kathy Anthony has prep instruc ons and surfaces, so please pick them up. Debbie will be picking Lynne up from BWI on June 5 (Thursday) and Carolyn invited anyone who would like to join Lynne, Carolyn and Debbie for dinner Thursday night at Mike’s Crab House in Pasadena. They plan to be there about 6:30 PM. On Friday, we will take Lynne to dinner at Bonefish Grill in the mall (and miss the Friday a er‐noon traffic!); Saturday, we will go to Sunset, and Sunday is s ll TBD. Marie Lewandowski and Shelley Moore are in the back of the room holding the vo ng for Debbie Co on seminar
projects (September 26‐28). Please vote only if you think you will be a ending the seminar in September. Carolyn asked for volunteers to set up the room on the Thursday before the Deb‐bie Co on seminar, as Carolyn will be out of town. She also asked for someone to break down the room on Sunday a er the seminar. There was a request that the street addresses of the Kent Is‐land Library (200 Library Circle, Stevensville, MD 21666) as well as our other mee ng places be published in the newsle ers so people can use their GPS to get to mee ngs. Carolyn noted the addresses are on the web site, but she will see that they are also in the newsle er. People familiar with the library loca on said it sits way back from the main road, so you need to look carefully. Carolyn thanked Kathy Myrick and Candy Mollica for teaching the memory boxes in April. Carolyn thanked those who filled out the seminar teacher sur‐vey and said Debbie has contacted Janice Miller (June) and Cheri Rol (September) for the 2015 seminars and Brenda Stew‐art (June) and Janelle Johnson (September) for 2016. Deposits have been made with all four of the ladies. The projects selected today for the Debbie Co on seminar in September (9/26‐28) will be in the next newsle er, along with registra on informa on. If any surfaces are ordered with reg‐istra on, they will be distributed at the September mee ng. Chapter Projects – Kathy Anthony said she has no addi onal informa on on the Kent Island Paint‐In (5/21) – Kathy Myrick will be teaching a new Mary Owens design. Linda Alice Dudley has the signup forms for her Summer Paint‐in at the Linthicum Library (7/19). She said she didn’t bring the actual piece with her today, but the picture on this registra on form is be er than the previous picture. The deadline for the June paint‐in with Kathy Anthony (the summer board from the Tole Fairies book) is today. Candy Mollica will teach the fall Tole Fairies board in September; Elaine Smith will teach a Rebecca Trimble project in October; Debbie will teach the companion piece (Bi ersweet Moon) to last year’s Spring plaque in November; and Debbie will teach the December free class, the Winter Tole Fairies board (there will be a materials fee, but no teacher fee). Debbie had said in April that the embellishments (shells, ribbons, etc.) to the Tole Fairies boards are included in the materials fee. Kathy said she had planned on having the embellishments for the summer board today, but Sandy Strecker won’t be able to send them un l she returns from the SDP Conven on. They should be available at the class. Memory Boxes – Candy Mollica is also on the way to the SDP Conven on, so Carolyn announced the sad news that Candy would like a break from being in charge of the memory box

13
program. She has handled the program a very long me and has informa on on contacts, etc. for the next person. Carolyn said there is some work involved, such as ordering the boxes, planning and teaching a class once a year, and delivering the boxes to the hospitals. Community Service ‐ We are doing the collec on for Grass Roots today. Carole Shuey will be at her car to take any dona‐ons that she didn’t get before the mee ng. Carole will deliv‐
er our dona ons to Grass Roots on Monday – she said they are very apprecia ve of everything we give them. Ways and Means – Judi Graham is selling raffle ckets for the tea box painted and donated by Candy Mollica. The drawing will be at the June mee ng. Carolyn is going to take the box to her tea group mee ng before our June mee ng and see if she can sell some raffle ckets. Newsle er – The deadline is May 15th. Sail Away 2014 – Carolyn announced that she had a blast at Sail Away and said she’d received many posi ve comments. She thanked Carole Shuey and Bobbie Draves for doing a good job chairing the event. Carolyn said that she enjoyed the op‐portunity to learn new things, like trying pastels for the first me with Judy Leasure. Carolyn read a note she’d received
from Terry Warrington, a first‐ me a endee. She said Beth Weiss had suggested that Terry should a end and Terry was sorry she’d hadn’t come sooner. Terry said she will be back next year and it was well worth the me and money. Carole men oned that she has three big Sail Away binders and won‐dered how long we need to keep informa on (and passing it from one chairman to the next). Carolyn said that will be a topic for the Sail Away 2015 chair and commi ee. We ne ed about $663 from Sail Away. Miscellaneous ‐ Carolyn noted again that volunteers are s ll needed to chair the Nomina ng, Sail Away 2015, and Birthday Luncheon Commi ees. The nomina ng commi ee has to start ASAP in order to have the elec on on me at the September mee ng. Linda Miller has been the chair of the Birthday lunch‐eon for a few years, but because no one else volunteered, she has graciously agreed to serve again. NEW BUSINESS
Carolyn stated that the board has been discussing the Chapter’s finances. At the last mee ng, there was a lot of talk about targeted fund raising (i.e., raising funds for a specific purpose). She will put a list of poten al objec ve for fundraising in the next newsle er and we will vote at the June mee ng what we want to raise funds for as a chapter. Ideas already men oned include: subsidizing another seminar, as we did with Willow Wolfe; using funds to lower the cost of all seminars, purchasing anoth‐er projector system for use at Sail Away; a field trip to Re‐
becca Baer’s, World of Color, etc.
Carole Shuey men oned that several people expressed an interest in purchasing more of the beau ful cards that Lucy Jo Wirth painted for the table favors at Sail Away. There was a discussion about honoring copyrights. Susan Stamillio added that “we” just finished a huge lawsuit against someone selling images without permission. Copy‐right law says if a designer knows that someone is viola ng the copyright, but does nothing to stop it, then the design‐er can lose the copyright to his/her own work. She sug‐gested that the easiest thing to do if someone wants to use another person’s artwork is to enter into a licensing agreement. She knows of agreements that require the payment of one cent for each copy of the image the licen‐see sells, but the ar st retains the copyright.
Debbie Reeder is represen ng the Chapter at the SDP con‐ven on.
Show and Tell – Marie Lewandowski showed the Linda Miller ba k that Marie won at Sail Away – she framed it and it was gorgeous. She said the frame came from Michaels and was one that someone else had custom ordered and then hated. Marie said it was a $600 frame that she paid $125 for. Carolyn men oned that we should also check out local framers be‐cause they are some mes cheaper than the cra stores, even with a coupon. It’s also good to support local business people. Next Events: Wednesday, May 21 ‐ Kent Island Paint‐in at 9:30 AM at the Kent Island Library. The address is 200 Library Circle, Stevens‐ville, MD 21666. June 6‐8 – Lynne Andrews Seminar, the Center at Glen Burnie, 6711 Ritchie Highway (Rte 2) North, Glen Burnie, MD June 21 – Chapter Mee ng, Linthicum Library, 400 Shipley Road, Linthicum, MD (see our web site for parking restric ons) July 19 – Summer Paint‐In, 9:30 at the Linthicum Library, 400 Shipley Road, Linthicum, MD (see our web site for parking re‐stric ons) Kathy Anthony made a mo on to adjourn, which was seconded by Elaine Smith. Mee ng adjourned at 11:33 AM. Respec vely Submi ed, Bobbie Draves, Secretary
