THE FMF WAYFor over 45 years, Flemington Midget Football has provided instruction and support to thousands

of successful athletes. During that time, we have developed a unique culture, based around five

core beliefs that guide everything we do. “The FMF Way”, is what al lows us to successful ly

develop our athletes physical ly, mental ly and emotionally while providing them with positive

experiences and memories that wil l last a l ifetime. THE FMF WAY is:

FAMILYOnce a member, always a member

SAFETYAthlete safety first, last & always

TEACHINGCoaching is teaching

TEAMWED not me

SUCCESSShare the work, share the reward

Team success is a by-product of coaches developing every athlete to their personal potential as

they progress through the program. Good teams become great when coaches view practice as an

opportunity to help their athletes grow and develop and when athletes view practice as an

opportunity to maximize their contribution to the team.

No one can win by themselves. We all have to trust and rely on each other for the team to be

successful. Both coaches & athletes must be prepared to do whatever is necessary for the good of

the team. Great teams are built on Teamwork, Dedication, Effort and Trust. . . lessons that wil l help

our athletes succeed in sports and in l ife.

I t is every coach’s responsibi l ity to teach the fundamental ski l ls and strategies of their sport to ALL

of their athletes. I t is every athlete’s responsibi l ity to put forth the effort to learn. I f an athlete gives

the effort, coaches must do whatever is necessary to help them learn and improve. Athletes that

progress through our program giving honest effort WILL enter high school with a competitive

advantage in skil ls and tactics

The health and safety of our athletes comes before everything else. Parents trust us with their

chi ldren; we must do everything in our power to return them safely. Athletes must let their coach

know if they are injured and must not return to action unti l they are ful ly ready.

Whenever an athlete competes as a Pioneer or Jr. Red Devil , they join a long tradition of

excellence. Many have come before us; we must honor their work by our actions. Many wil l come

after us; we must provide them with a program to be proud of. Once an athlete becomes part of

our FMF family, they wil l forever be welcome here.

Flemington Midget Football is a 501 (c)3 organization dedicated to improving the youth of Hunterdon Countythrough competitive Football and Cheer. One of the oldest youth football organizations in the area, from our

founding in 1 967 through 201 0, FMF teams were exclusively known as the Flemington Pioneers. Since 2009, wehave undergone tremendous growth and have reclaimed our original name of FMF. In 2009, we added our

extended season competition cheer team. In 201 0, with the addition our Hunterdon Jr. Red Devils teams, ourfootbal l offerings were expanded from four football teams participating in one league to ten football teamsparticipating in three leagues. In 201 3 we were able to offer, for the first time, an Extended Season Cheer

Training Squad for girls who were either too young or not yet prepared for the rigors of our Extended SeasonComp. Team. Thoughout al l of our recent growth, we have worked hard to stay true to our guiding principles ,"The FMF Way", and maintain our position as the premier youth football and cheer program in the central

Hunterdon region.

LETTERFROM

THEEDITORAs I write this, school is ending across the area and thoughts drift to summer.

Throughout Hunterdon County, kids are looking forward to sleeping late, summer vacations,

baseball or lacrosse games, barbeques, pool parties and fireworks. While I hope everyone has

a safe and enjoyable summer, I want al l of our footbal l and cheer athletes to think ahead to the

fal l for a minute. The football and cheer season wil l be here before you know it and as the

saying goes, "Championships are won in the offseason".

To help our athletes fulfi l l their potential , FMF has gathered several local partners to

provide opportunities to sharpen your skil ls before preseason practice begins. Aspiring

quarterbacks can work with former Pioneer and Division I Quarterback Blake Searfoss to

develop their ski l ls. See Blake's flyer inside this issue to find out more. Speed kil ls, and our

friend Ryan Stevens, the JP Case Athletic Trainer, offers speed and agil ity along with strength

and conditioning classes through Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset

(RWJUHS) Sports Medicine. You can find out more about Ryan and RWJUHS's offerings

inside this issue as well .

To celebrate the end of school and to l iteral ly KICK OFF the summer, FMF wil l be

hosting the only official ly sanctioned NFL Punt, Pass & Kick competition in the area on June 22

at our complex from 1 0am to 1 pm. The event is FREE to girls and boys from age 6 through 1 5,

Pioneers, Jr. Red Devils, and everyone else. Winners at each age group (boys and girls have

separate winners) wil l advance to regional level competition. From there, they may continue to

advance with the ultimate prize being the opportunity to appear on a Monday Night Football

telecast. I t al l starts here on June 22nd.

I would also l ike to mention the FMF Social, an adult Wine Tasting/Party Fundraiser

being held on August 1 4th at the Unionvil le Vineyards. Live music, beer and wine and food

catered by Blue Fish Gril l . FMF parties are legendary, and this one wil l be no different.

Seating is l imited, so visit our website and reserve your tickets now!

And final ly, you may have seen our ImPACT testing advertisements in previous issues of

FMF magazine. We wil l be partnering with RWJUHS to conduct the baseline ImPACT testing

this year to al l boys and girls AGE 1 2 AND OVER at no cost to our famil ies. I t was original ly

our intention to offer ImPACT baseline testing to our athletes age 1 0 and over. After

consultation with experts at RWJUHS, it was explained to us that the baseline ImPACT testing

is not appropriate for athletes under 1 2 as they have found that the results are not rel iable.

That's al l for now (and really, isn't it enough?). Have a great summer! See you at the

fields!

Our football story: Should I let our son playtackle football?by: Michael Lupton

Story can be found at: http: //usafootball .com/blogs/heads-up-footbal l/post/8767/our-footbal l-

story-should-i-let-our-son-play-tackle-footbal l

This question is being asked in households in every city and town across the United

States. Warriors Youth Sports in Denver and the Arapahoe Youth League would l ike to provide

our answer to this question – a resounding YES – and then provide you information to help

you reach the same conclusion.

Having played this sport, coached my own sons and instructed many others, I strongly

feel that every child who shows interest should be allowed to play tackle football , the greatest

game out there. Football provides the best opportunities for your child to learn many life

lessons that wil l apply to the future. Life lessons to help them be better men, husbands,

fathers, citizens, employees, bosses P you name it.

Football is a hard sport. There is no debating that. However, I bel ieve many of you wil l

echo that at times life is pretty hard as well . There is no other sport that requires the same

levels of teamwork, self-sacrifice, rel iance on others and physical preparedness that a player

learns in tackle football . Like l ife, footbal l knocks you down time and time again and requires

you to get up and face those challenges unti l you master them. Football teaches

perseverance, something that can be applied to playing a musical instrument, public speaking,

math, chemistry, work skil ls, boot camp, special projects, family budgets and so much more.

You may accept al l of this, but it doesn’t address your fears that your son wil l get

seriously hurt playing tackle football . Unfortunately, this is an area where the national media

has done a great disservice to this question. Football in America is news. I t is the most popular

sport on TV, and it wil l always attract the negative story if there is one out there.

COVERSTORY

continued from page 11 . . .

In February 201 2, USA Football commissioned a two-year study of injuries in footbal l

cal led the Youth Football Player Safety Surveil lance Study. This independent scientific study

monitored 1 3 leagues with more than 200 teams and 4,000 players, ages 5 to 1 4, in six

states. For the study, medical professionals attended every practice and documented every

injury – from an upset stomach to the smallest bruise to broken bones and concussions –

during the course of the 201 2 and 201 3 seasons. The study’s findings include:

-Nearly 90 percent of youth players did not sustain an injury that resulted in missing a

game or practice

-Of the 22.4 percent of players who reported an injury, 70 percent returned to play the

same day

-Of the 11 .9 percent of players who missed a game or practice because of injury, 60

percent returned to play within seven days.

-Bruises were the most common injuries (34 percent) fol lowed by ligament sprains

(1 6 percent)

-1 .4 percent of players suffered a broken bone or fracture with 77 percent of these in

the forearm, wrist or hand

-More than 95 percent of players in the study did not sustain a concussion

-No youth player age 7 or younger sustained a concussion at any time during the

two-year study

-No catastrophic head, neck or heat related injuries were reported among the more

than 4000 players during the study’s two-year span

-Injury rate and time loss rate goes up with age

This research marks the first significant data-driven study performed regarding youth

football and represents a huge advancement in learning and understanding for our parents.

I t is bel ieved to be the first study of its scope in youth football ’s 80-plus year history. One

national expert in the area of sports medicine and injury rehabil itation is Dr. Stanley Herring

from the University of Washington. Dr. Herring points out your children are far more likely to

get injured in wheel-based recreation such as skate boards, bikes, rol lerblades or on school

playgrounds or using trampolines than in tackle football . Al l of this data leads to the

conclusion that tackle football is not radical ly unsafe for your son to play.

Another important consideration has been raised by Tom Cove, president and CEO of

the Sports & Fitness Industry Association. Mr. Cove recently stated in an industry forum that

the “biggest health issues in the U.S. comes from inactivity. Inactivity has become a pandemic

in the U.S.” In 2007, 25 percent of Americans said they were inactive, (nearly 70 mil l ion

people). That number rose to 28 percent by 201 2 (nearly 80 mil l ion people) and is projected

to grow to 31 percent in 201 8 (nearly 91 mil l ion people). In Mr. Cove’s opinion, the benefits of

footbal l to the youth of the U.S. is huge, and football is a tremendous opportunity to get our

children active.

We believe that tackle football is the greatest sport for a child to play, and it is

important to measure a sport’s benefits against its risks. Tackle Football is a hard sport, no

question, but with the commitment to make this sport safer for al l of our players we hope you

can now answer the question posed above with your own resounding yes!

JAMES L. "JIMMY" WILSONOur Number One Fan

Jimmy Wilson left a lasting memory with everyone who visited Pioneer Field throughout the 1 980's and early1 990's. While his wheelchair kept him from taking part on the field, it couldn't keep him from being part of theteam. At the end of every summer, l ike the changing of the seasons, Jimmy was there to usher in footbal l

season. He was as much a part of the Pioneer family as the crack of pads echoing through the crisp autumn airand the roar of the crowd on game day. For close to a decade, Jimmy never missed a game, indeed, he nevermissed a practice in al l of his time with us. His love for the game and for the team was infectious and wil l be

forever remembered. In 1 994, after his passing, the organization recognized Jimmy's contribution to our familyby naming the playing field after him and retiring the number one jersey, in memory of their #1 fan.

JOSEPH YASHKAS6/4/85 - 4/29/00 : Forever a Pioneer

Joey Yashkas was a Pioneer through and through. He played football for the program and was a greatteammate and a key member of the team from his peewee days through his eigth grade season. As much ashe loved football and his teammates, Joey also loved racing motorcycles. I t was this love that took Joey from usfar too soon. After the tragic motorcycle accident that took his l ife in 2000, the organization retired his number55 and decreed that in remembrance of Joey and Jimmy, their numbers 1 and 55 be painted in the corner of the

endzone for every home game so that they wil l always be part of our family.
