Hi everyone,
I watched Question Time last week and
Nev Wilshire (Welsh call centre) was a
panel member. He made some comment
about what if England didn‟t do well in
the football. He then went on to say
“There‟ll be some winging pome‟s out
there I can tell you”. Strangely enough,
about 10 years ago I had an Australian
neighbour, actually that‟s not strange,
but strangely enough he used to make the
same mistake as Nev Wilshire did.
The „British‟ are not the pome‟s. Origi-
nally it‟s fair to say they had that title or
moreover the ships that carried thieves,
rapists, scoundrels and anyone who stole
a loaf of bread to Australia circa 1830
when we used deportation as a method of
„non capital‟ punishment, would have the
letters “POME” in 6 feet high livery
painted on the sides. It stood for
“Prisoners of Mother England”. Why?
Because ships were valuable and it sent a
clear message to any „would-be pirate‟ to
„Stay away from this ship as only trouble
awaits you here‟. Originally an acronym
for the status of inmates sent to Australia:
'Prisoner of Mother England'. At first
used by the English to describe Austra-
lians (as anyone Australian must, obvi-
ously, have come from prison), now in a
strange reversal used by Australians to
designate anyone from England. But just
for the record Nev, and all those other
misguided historians, including my
daughter who has lived in Australia for 4
years and now feels she has the right to
teasingly chastise me with “Ya winging
pome” Please get it right. I‟m British and
definitely not a pome!
Stay safe everyone
